Cincinnati Art Museum Partners with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company to Showcase BLINK Light Installation
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact • Jill E. Dunne • Director of Marketing and Communications 513-639-2954 • [email protected] 953 Eden Park Drive│Cincinnati, Ohio│45202 www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org *Images Available Upon Request Cincinnati Art Museum partners with Cincinnati Shakespeare Company to showcase BLINK light installation CINCINNATI— The Cincinnati Art Museum and the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company present artist Anila Quayyum Agha’s lighted art installation Alhambra Nights as part of BLINK, the four-day light and art event, October 12–15. This pop-up exhibition, located inside the Bridgeland Performance Studio on the second floor of The Otto M. Budig Theater, features five laser-cut tetrahedrons lit from within to create an immersive installation. Showcased in the theater’s corner windows, this work will be a shining beacon visible from the BLINK- activated Washington Park across the street. Agha creates immersive installations by manipulating light. In Alhambra Nights, light emanates from the center of five sculptural forms, creating shadows that intersect and overlap. The geometric and floral patterns of the works are inspired by Islamic architectural design and reference the artist’s formative years in Pakistan, her recent travels to the Alhambra Palace in Spain, as well as her experience of living in the United States, away from her extended family and friends. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company’s Otto M. Budig Theater, located at 12th and Elm streets, opened in September. During BLINK it is presenting several showings of Dracula and patrons will be able to view Alhambra Nights from inside the building. Cincinnati Art Museum educators will be present at Washington Park near the theater during the evenings of BLINK to answer questions about the Agha installation. -

Rookwood and the Japanese Mania in Cincinnati by Kenneth Trapp
Rookwood and the Japanese Mania in Cincinnati by Kenneth Trapp ntroduced to the arts of Japan at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, the I American public quickly developed a near-manic taste for things Japa- nese. Just as the English and the French two decades earlier had warmly embraced Japanese themes and styles, Americans now found an irresistible charm in the art from the exotic Land of the Rising Sun.1 A virtual Japanese fever swept America, burning most intensely and with indelible effect in the Arts and Crafts Movement. In few American cities was the Japanese mania more avid than in Cin- cinnati, where it manifested itself most strikingly in the decorative arts movement which began to flower in the Queen City in the late 1870's. With the founding of the Rookwood pottery in 1880, the powerful influence of Japanese art upon Cincinnati's decorators was soon to become a matter of nationwide note and emulation. While the Japanese influence upon Rookwood is commonly acknowledged by authorities on the pottery, only recently has there been an attempt to study the subject with some thoroughness. The dispersion of documents, a paucity of examples, and the complex nature of the subject have doubtless impeded serious investigation. Furthermore, a thorough study of the Japa- nese influence on Rookwood must be directed to more than the location, identification, and cataloguing of Japanese sources used by Rookwood deco- rators. Involved and important as this task is, it does not, however, focus upon the larger picture: the context of the Japanese mania in Cincinnati and in America and the effects the Japanese influence had upon the artistic and technical developments of Rookwood pottery. -

In 1906, at the age of 21, he moved to Paris. Many factors shaped his decision. Born in the port city of Livorno, he belonged to an educated family of Sephardic Jews (descended from Spain and Portugal), who encouraged his ambition and exposed him to languages and literature. He had seen great Renaissance art and had trained as a painter. But Paris offered excitement. Paris offered variety. There he would encounter ways of thinking, seeing and behaving that challenged and shaped his work. This exhibition opens with a self-portrait, painted around 1915, in which Modigliani presents himself as the tragic clown Pierrot. His contemporaries would have recognised the reference instantly as, at the time, the figure appeared in countless pictures, plays and films. A young person shaping their identity could relate to Pierrot, a stock character open to interpretation, linked to the past and looking towards the future. Pierrot could be comedic, melancholy or romantic, played by any actor or painted by any artist. -

So don’t miss out on your opportunities: Get going and participate! © 2020 Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery Research assistance provided by Kasey Koczo / UC-DAAP Fine Arts 2022 EOG 2020 – page i Artist Tips Before applying, visit some of the listings in this guide to determine which venues are the best match for you. Alternative spaces are a good place to begin. Most commercial galleries expect an established body of work and an exhibition history before representing an artist. Contact venues first to ask about selection procedures: Do not expect anyone to review your work without an appointment. Most venues review digital images or printouts first. If there is interest, a studio visit might be requested. When sending your proposal: For electronic entries, request the proper digital format in advance. Label each submission in your e-mail or jumpdrive with your name, title, date, media, and dimensions. If sending a physical copy of your proposal, include a self-addressed stamped envelope to ensure the return of your materials, or assume they will be discarded. Track responses and returns to better strategize your efforts. -

Cincinnati Art Museum's Van Gogh Exhibition to Bring Guests Into the Undergrowth October 15–January 8, 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact • Jill E. Dunne • Director of Marketing and Communications 513-639-2954 • [email protected] 953 Eden Park Drive │Cincinnati, Ohio│45202 www.cincinnatiartmuseum.org *Images Available Upon Request Cincinnati Art Museum’s Van Gogh exhibition to bring guests Into the Undergrowth October 15–January 8, 2017 CINCINNATI — Centered on Vincent van Gogh’s Undergrowth with Two Figures, the Cincinnati Art Museum’s new exhibition, Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth, will take visitors up close with celebrated woodland landscapes from October 15, 2016–January 8, 2017. This exhibition—presented only at the Cincinnati Art Museum—brings an important group of artworks on loan from around the world together for the first time. Exploring the works of the Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries, the exhibition traces the evolution of the Dutch artist’s love of the natural world, powers of observation and mastery of detail through this special group of landscape paintings spanning his career. This exhibition is the first to take a close look at Van Gogh’s poetic depictions of the forest floor, known as sous-bois, the French term for “undergrowth.” These odes to nature were a reaction to the increasing industrialization and urbanization of society. The exhibition allows visitors to compare Van Gogh’s treatment of this theme with examples by those who influenced and inspired him, including Théodore Rousseau, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin. Twenty artworks are borrowed from museum collections in Canada, The Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Japan and more, and are joined by works from the Cincinnati Art Museum’s own important collection of French paintings and works on paper. -
