College of Charleston To our College of Charleston Community:

’m pleased to present the College of Charleston 2012 Donor Report. In 2012, the College continued to make progress in growing and sustaining a culture of philanthropy and becoming a national university with a global reach. I We established many new high-water marks in 2012, including records in fundraising, in student applications and in students studying abroad. In addition, we began our transition to the Colonial Athletic Association, a move that will create many new athletic, academic and professional development opportunities for our students, faculty and staff. We owe much of our success to you. The impact of your giving is evident all across our campus, from scholarships to the continued growth of our Jewish Studies Program, to exciting new academic initiatives in our School of Business. You can read more about these and other philanthropic highlights from 2012 on the following pages. As philanthropy continues to become more ingrained in our campus culture, we are seeing an unprecedented level of engagement among our donors and supporters. In 2012, total giving reached $16 million, representing a 60 percent increase over 2011 and marking the fifth consecutive year that we have increased our giving totals. Of the $16 million, $2.7 million was raised through our 13 annual giving funds, including significant increases in alumni and parent giving. These upward trends are exactly what we want to see as we prepare to launch our national comprehensive campaign this fall. To bolster the success of our campaign, we have established a Comprehensive Campaign Steering Committee. This volunteer group of donors will help to advance the campaign, act as champions for the College and help secure leadership gifts. I am so pleased that alumnus Steve Swanson, Class of 1989, will join me in co- chairing this campaign. You can read more about Steve and his wife, Emily, Class of 1989, on page 6. With the help of this esteemed group of leaders – along with the enthusiastic engagement of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents and many friends – I am confident we will reach our goals for the campaign. Thank you for your support and thank you for believing in our vision for the future of the College of Charleston.

Sincerely,

P. George Benson President
