THIRTY-EIGHTH ANNUAL MEETING The anniversary was held on Tuesday, May 14, in the Marble Collegiate Church, Fifth Avenue and Twenty-ninth Street, New York City. There were about four hundred and fifty present. • After devotional exercises the President welcomed the so cieties to the meeting and church. Mrs. Burrell said it was a double anniversary for her be cause twenty-one years ago she became a manager. At that anniversary not a woman’s voice was heard, men doing all of the speaking. Only five of the managers whose names were then on the. list remain to-day, and two as honorary Vice Presidents. The 350 societies have grown into 703. The Young Woman’s Branch has been promoted into a standing committee on young woman’s work. There are 700 new subscribers to the Gleaner this year. „ Will each society try to add ten more by November first? Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. The Treasurer reported the amount raised during the year to be $71,057.51, which is $6,000 short of the sum we need, and we hope to make up this amount by the first of June. If every auxiliary will share the responsibility it can be done easily. • , The nominations for the Managers for the ensuing year were read by Rev. J. G. Fagg, D-D, and on motion the Man agers thus named were elected. Miss Mary W. Shepard, our missionary to the Amoy Mis sion, then gave an interesting address on the'“Reflections in China,” ending with a plea to us to remember our responsi bility, that we are to reflect as a mirror the glory of the Lord. She also spoke of the great immediate need of more workers in China. . Miss Alice B. Van Doren, our missionary to India, spoke of “The River and the Rock”—the vision of Isaiah made clear in the East—Rivers of water in a dry place, the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Miss Olivia H. Lawrence, our Corresponding Secretary, spoke next—“There Are the Pointers”—the gratitude of the Chinese, Japanese and Hindus for the work of the Woman’s Board, the magnitude of the task, the grandeur of the mission ary character, souls on a high level, and the great reward were the pointers touched upon. Greetings were given from our missionary: Mrs. L. B. Chamberlain, India; and from our missionaires under appoint ment: Miss Maude Norling, China; Miss May B. Demarest, Japan; Miss Florence E. Dick, Japan; Miss Amy K. Hendricks, Japan; Miss Gertrud Schafheitlin, Arabia. “To make some nook of God’s creation a little fruitfuller, better, more worthy of G^d; to make some human hearts a little wiser, manfuler, happier,—more blessed, less accursed! It is work for a God.” The afternoon session brought- a feast of good things, notT ably Mrs. Henry W. Peabody’s charming address on- “The Fruits of the Jubilee.” Joy, Unity, Courage, Knowledge, Faith, Humility—she reported the united Jubilee offering to be $1, 030,000, and ended with the inspiring “Blow, Bugle, Blow. Trumpeter sound for the last crusade----- ” “Rally us! Rally us ! Rally us!” Rev. Frank Eckerson followed with a stirring appeal to us to cross the new five-barred flag of China with the Cross of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The offering was taken as in the morning for the travelling expenses of our new missionaries. The offertory prayer was made by Mrs. Van Alstine. The last address was given by Mr. J. Campbell White on * “ Women and Missions.” Mr. White gave as reasons why women should be our national leaders in missionary enterprise. First.—Because they are the chief sufferers under the non- Christian religions. Second.—Because they are the chief gainers under Christ’s dominion. Third.—Because they have greater opportunity for wielding educational and spiritual in fluence. Ending with a plea for a simpler life in our homes, that more time and money might be given to the Chnstless ones of the earth. And so we reach the close of the day’s sessions, Mr. Daw son pronouncing the benediction. We have been “seeing the multitudes” without Christ. We have been hearing of the growth of the Kingdom through the* loving and heroic service of our missionaries. •Are we satisfied with our record for the year?

“Up, up, my soul the long-spent time redeeming; Sow thou the seeds of better deed and thought; Light other lamps while yet thy light is beaming, The time, the time is short.” _

Committee on TResolutions, _ fl&ts. S)avtO 5ames Burrell * /IBrs. 71. H. IRaven /ibts. ©e 'Mitt ftnox ANNUAL REPORT of the CORRESPONDING SECRETARY.

'‘They slip away, these little years—so swiftly do they pass; They take the song, mayhap, but leave the echoes sweet that hum— The year, ’tis true, is gone, but there’s another year to come.”

The past twelve months have been tinged with the Jubilee’s afterglow, for the high tide of inspiration has not been wholly lost in the return swing of the pendulum to the ordinary round and common task in missionary society life, while the united efforts of the “Continuation Committee” have naturally led to a higher expectation on the field. The summing up of results of the campaign so far as ascertainable finds its place in the report of the Room Secretary. ' Our own »welcome to the Home Base was at the delightful Tea given by our President, Mrs. Burrell, early in October when we had as guests of honor Mrs. Bell and Miss Johnston of the English Presbyterian Church, en route to visit their missions in China. October twenty-seventh was a day of special Prayer, and a little company gathered in the chapel of the Marble Collegiate Church for thanksgiving and praise, and to ask the Lord to give us “strength to labor as we know, and to build above the ' deep intent, the deed.” In late November the noble consecrated life of our beloved Honorary President, Mrs. Paul D. Van Cleef, found its com pleteness in the life eternal. A charter member of the Woman’s Board of Foreign Missions, more than we realized did we rely upon her wisdom, counsel, and power in prayer. Her influence will ever abide, for a holy self-devoted life never dies. Thus with tear-dimmed eyes, at the Thanksgiving time of the year, we looked up to thank Our Father for this His hand-maiden who gave so unstintedly of herself as to lay the entire denomination under obligation. Reverently we ask, appreciating the unique position Mrs. Van Cleef held in the life of our Woman's Board and of its far-reaching interests, 'upon whom will her mantle fall? ’ ' “With us her name shall live ' , Through long succeeding years, • Endeared with all our hearts can give Our praises and our tears." * At the Christmastide the bright spirit of Mrs. Joseph R. Sizoo was released from months of increasing weariness. Her brief association with our Arcot Mission seems almost a dream, yet without doubt some lives have been influenced because she laid down hers for India. Some in our immediate circle of membership have felt the shadow of loneliness enter heart and home as dear ones have gone on to the Homeland, but hearts are brave and spirits true, as they carry on to completion the works they left to do. The death of Mrs. Asa LeFevre removed one who had served as Classical Committee for many years with enthusiastic effi ciency, and who by “magnifying her office” wrought worthily and well. Mrs. Edgar Ellsworth has been appointed to fill this va cancy in the Classis of Kingston. Other changes have been made necessary owing to removals and resignations, and the new names will be found in the Classical tables. Certain aims in the campaign, with the lowering of denomi national barriers, have been wonderfully realized in Interdenomi national Study Classes, for that germ continues its good and con tagious course. In many centers large numbers have gathered, listened to lectures and teachers, gaining a broader vision, and deeper sense of privilege and obligation, thereby adding to virtue, knowledge which is power, enabling them to study to show them selves workers approved of God. Grateful recognition is given to those who in the absence of the Secretary planned wisely and well and upon whom arrange ments for the work devolved. Mrs. Philip Van Alstine represented the Woman's Board at the Western Conferences giving inspiration and good cheer. Mis sionaries have co-operated in a multiplicity of ways. Especially do we appreciate the generosity of Miss’Alice Van Doren who has given her time, strength and effort in conferences, societies, study classes and in certain of the colleges, where her influence has been peculiarly blessed. The Missionary Unions and AuxiU iaries have had the benefit of visits from the members of the Woman’s Board who have gladly presented the work. Since the return of Miss Nash and the Corresponding Secretary many con gregations and societies have listened to the recital of their ex periences while visiting our churches in Asia. r To our list of Auxiliaries we have added 19 making a total of 703; this number is subject to revision as many societies did not report. Several among the new ones are those which have been re-organized, and we regret a few have disbanded.' Three sectional conferences for young women have been held, Schenectady, Albany and Kingston being the centers chosen. The joint conference of the Branch and Associate members was held in New York. In addition to these there have been union meetings in New Brunswick and Newark. At all of these Miss Van Doren has been the guest of honor and spoken with marked acceptance. . One could have- no greater joy for the young women than that they should enter this work with the spirit of devoted enthusiasm that animated the devout women a half cen tury ago,; and this same enthusiasm plus the knowledge gained from the generation of mothers, should work wonders, effective and far-reaching. That our work may be the more unified it has been deemed expedient to promote the Young Woman’s Branch to the place of Committee on Young Woman’s Work. With this closer re lationship and co-operation we look for advancement and substan tial gain in our efforts to reach all the young women. Our Board was represented at the Northfield Summer School by the usual quota of delegates, Miss Van Nest being the efficient committee. At the Tri-ennial Conference of Women’s Boards which met in Philadelphia in February four members of our Board were present. Mrs. DeWitt Knox has served loyally on the Jubilee Continuation Committee and represented our denomi nation in a variety of places and ways. % The ingathering of the gold and silver in this year of the Jubilee's aftermath has not been quite sufficient to meet our ap propriations. From all sources we have received $71,057.51. This includes the Conger Memorial gift which will be used for the much needed building at Kaveripak for the Hindu Girls’ School. At the Birthday Celebration Mrs. Burnell gave an im personation of a Hindu Widow. There was a larger audience present than usual, and the offering was designated for the Arcot " Hindu Girls’ School. Three beds have been endowed in the Mary Lott Lyles Hospital, Madanapalle, which are to bear the names of Mrs. Abigail Lott Lyles, Mrs. Mary A. Reeves Lawrence, Mrs. Cordelia Van Den Bergh. The one legacy received was from Miss Susan Y. Lansing for $5,000 which is to be held in trust. A gift from Miss Gould has enabled us to finish the heat ing plant at Ferris Seminary. With one check came this message from Dakota. "We have raised this $150 at a Mission Festival held by the women, old ancl young.” A Sunday School far from the center of church life at its Mite Box opening had $250, and this for but eleven months. From instances such as these we take courage. From their labors abundant and for well earned furlough we have "welcomed home,” Mrs. and Miss Van Doren and the Rev. L. B. Chamberlain and family from India; Rev. and Mrs. Pitcher, and Miss Mary W. Shepard from China; Miss Grace Thomasma from Japan; Mrs. S. M. Zwemer, Mr. and Mrs. Dirk Dykstra, from Arabia. Our mission stations have been cheered by the return of Rev. Dr. L. R. Scudder and family to India. Rev. Albertus Pieters and family and Miss Jennie Pieters have rejoined the South Japan Mission which is rejoicing in its new missionary Miss Noordhoff. Once again Miss Lily N. Duryee is with her beloved Amoy Mission which has been made glad by the arrival of Dr. and Mrs. Strick. Rev. and Mrs. John Van Ess have returned to Arabia and that Mission has added to its numbers Dr. Hosmon, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw, Dr. and Mrs. Van Vlack and Mr. Haynes. "Oceans do not sever But unite us—land to land . Is brought in contact closer As the waves wash either strand.” With* peculiar gladness and gratitude we make the announce ment of the appointment of Miss Maude Norling to the Amoy Mission. Miss May B. Demarest ancl Miss Florence E. Dick to the North Japan Mission. Miss Amy Hendricks will also join the North Japan corps of workers as associate missionary; and to Arabia, Miss Schafheitlin. “No/thou, nor I the work of this year can judge, we stand too near.” The heart-stirring requests for workers and the sorely needed extra appropriations for the expanding work which is indica tive of God’s blessing, weigh on our hearts. To refuse seems like disregarding the beckoning hand of the Master Himself. We are closing a year that is memorable for marked success and enlargement in many ways.

“And Hope sends its cheering ray Far down the future’s broadening way.” , “To the living He sayeth, ‘Arise, follow Me,’ And that voice still soundeth on From the centuries that are gone, To the centuries that shall be.” “The feet that follow His must be swift feet For the time is all too short, the way too long; Perchance they may be bruised, but falter not, For love shall make them strong.”

CL 6Li*crr^ejejyLs Corresponding Secretary. REPORT OF THE ROOM SECRETARY. Last year, in anticipation of the Jubilee, Room Ten adopted as its motto the cry of the voice in the wilderness, “Prepare ye a road for the Lordand over the highway our hands helped to build we saw His footsteps pass. This year the Continuation Campaign has written our key-text in the words of St. Paul, “Distributing to the necessity of saints;” and because the neces sities of the saints have been many our year, though less event ful and less arduous than the last, has been full of activity and interest. In the early summer we faced about from Jubilee remi niscences to post-jubilee planning and the vacation mails car ried between the far-scattered members of the Continuation Committee long letters full of projects for enabling our Re formed Church women to take their part worthily in the great movement of the year. Out of chaotic suggestions at length came order and by the middle of September our October Cam paign for new members in the missionary societies and new subscribers to the Mission Gleaner was fairly under way. The Classical Committees were first informed of the plan and asked to furnish complete lists of the Presidents of Auxiliaries in their classes. To every President thus ascertained went a letter from the President of the Board outlining the plan of campaign and requesting the appointmeint of a committee to co-operate with other local churches to inaugurate the work in her own church and to report to the Board. As fast as these committees were named letters of instruction were sent them from Room Ten with budgets of literature to help in their canvass. It was orig inally intended to complete the Campaign in October, and this some societies did. Others were compelled by local conditions to select another time and when a report was called for in De cember, forty societies reported a completed canvass while others wrote of work in progress or about to begin. The February Gleaner stated results up to that time, showing 360 new mem bers in 64 reported Auxiliaries and 461 new subscribers to the Mission Gleaner. Since then no official accounting has been made, but personaMetters and Gleaner subscription lists have indicated that the work has gone forward in many quarters with good effect. How many of the newly organized or reorganized societies mentioned in the report of the Corresponding Secre tary are the fruit of this Campaign it is impossible to say. Neither can we compute how many of our 950 new subscribers to the Mission Gleaner are Campaign products. The total paid sub scription list of the Gleaner is now over 4,500. The magazine has been made larger and more attractive in form. The loyal continuance of old subscribers through many years attests its value. Can we not *yet reach the goal of “7,000 subscribers in 1912?” ' With increasing frequency come the letters from leaders or participants in the monthly program asking for help in the preparation of specified topics, and the topics, thanks to our mission study textbooks, are becoming less antiquated and more vital. This has created a greater demand not only for leaflet literature but for books from -our Circulating Library. One- third more books have been loaned this year than last. The Library Committee, anticipating requests for books of reference in connection with “China’s New Day” has already placed on the shelves some of the most recent books on China the titles of which will appear in*the new catalogue shortly to be published. Three new leaflets have been issued by thd Publication Committee: What We are Doing and Why We Need You, adapted by permission from a leaflet of the Congregational Board. Some College Girls, messages from some of our younger missionaries to the college girls of America. Making our Own Skyline, Miss Van Doren’s address at the annual conference of the Young Woman’s Branch and Asso ciate Members. * Three leaflets have been reprinted: The Village of the Mtlky River from the missionary lesson leaflet of the same name by Miss Van Doren. The Cry of Womanhood in Moslem Lands. What the Chinese Woman Told the Missionary. The two last named leaflets have been especially popular with other Boards, whose demand upon our limited supply made the reprint necessary. Two leaflets in the Holland language Moeders en de Zending and Tafereeling in China have also been prepared in the West through the courtesy of the Western District Secretary. The annual Thanksgiving letter to the Sunday-schools, a little story by Miss Winn entitled, The True Story of Ozeki San and His Frietids, was so attractive to the children that the entire edition of 10,000 copies was called for before Thanks giving and later orders could not be filled. Its financial success is recorded in the report of the Treasurer. One interesting development of the Jubilee is the popularity of impersonations and representations in costumes to give novelty to the missionary program. Room Ten’s wardrobe has been largely drawn upon not only by our own constituents but by other denominations, resulting in a considerable addi tion to our costume fund. We would recommend to the Cos tume Committee a thorough overhauling of the supply before _ fall and the purchase of new costumes to replace those rendered unpresentable by constant use. - We acknowledge with thanks a gift of India Sarees from Miss Van Nest and of a Japanese costume from Miss Pieters, of an interesting papyrus book from Miss Van Doren and of additional books for the Circulating Library from Mrs. Susan Duryee Fahmy. While intent on distributing to the necessity of the saints, we are not unmindful of St. Paul’s further injunction to be . “given to hospitality.” Room Ten is the Social Centre of our Board life and its doors are wide open to all on missionary inter est intent. Among other visitors this year we have been privileged to greet Miss Lily Duryee, Mr. and Mrs. Van Ess - Dr. and Mrs. Strick en route to the field and Mrs. and^Mjss Van Doren, Miss Shepard, Mrs. Zwemer, Rev. and Mrs. Pitcher, Rev. and Mrs. L. B. Chamberlain, and Mr. and Mrs. Dykstra at home on furlough. . The Thursday noon prayer meeting has continued to be a source of help to the workers in the Church Building and a source of power, we trust, to the workers without. We urge all who can to meet with us on Thursdays from twelve o'clock to twelve thirty to consider the things that pertain to the King dom of Christ and to cal] down blessings upon the work and workers that are our peculiar charge. For only as we continue “instant in prayer” shall we have grace to follow the other in junctions in which nhe twelfth chapter of Romans abounds “Be not wise in your own conceits; be kindly affectioned one to another with (sisterly) love; not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” ’ Respectfuly submitted, • E liza P. Cobb, Room Secretary. SEWING GUILD.

It is very gratifying to the Sewing Guild Committee to be able each year to report growth in its work. In most undertak ings the interest is apt to be spasmodic, with periods of retro gression as well as advancement, but in our endeavor there has been no lessening of interest nor swerving of purpose and this, in any enterprise, shows genuine growth. Among the articles sent to the different stations last year were over eight hundred petticoats, nearly six hundred jackets, one hundred and ninety-four frocks, nearly four hundred pillow cases, over six hundred sheets, nearly twelve hundred towels, fifteen hundred dolls and two thousand six hundred bandages. Our success is due largely to the fact that we have specific aims and a band of consecrated workers. We stand appalled at the wonderful changes that are taking place in the Orient, and it is not for us to measure, nor for others to belittle, the value of our work in the wonderful development of the Far East. Our gifts, so unselfishly and generously be stowed, first surprise, and then win the people to a favorable consideration of Christianity. Buddhism, Confucianism and Shin toism are supremely selfish and as a jeweler needs a dark back ground as a fitting setting for precious stones, so the dark back ground of heathenism serves to enhance the beauties of Chris tian virtues and benevolences. How satisfactory to know that back of the missionaries who are fighting so splendidly to wipe out the fears of superstition and cut the bonds of heathenism, are the members of the Sew ing Guild with their hands full of gifts to supply the material needs which in so many instances prepare the way for the spirit ual help. Such messages as these tend to emphasize the value of our support : “The Sewing Guild boxes came a couple of weeks ago and I want to write you my great pleasure in them and send you our hearty thanks for their ever welcome contents. The morning after they arrived I called in five school girls to help me and together we had a delightful time unpacking the boxes, all of us keenly interested and happy in the piles of petticoats, jackets, dolls and baby blankets and slips which we discovered. The mission al- mirahs had been almost empty of all, and it is a blessing to have a good supply of all of these things. We could use even more petticoats to supply a school of over forty twice a year but we are glad enough to have these and we were able to clothe the shabby little schoolgirls at once so that they are again a neat white jacketed, red petticoated brigade!” From Arabia we hear: “Our hearts were rejoiced over the beautiful supply of everything we needed. I was particularly happy to find some children's gowns of outing flannel; one I took immediately for a very ill little girl of two and one-half years old who needed just that for this cold weather. To-day I called forth the first faint smile for days by giving her one of the dolls. Still too weak to do anything but look her appreciation she hugged it as close as her little feeble hand would let her.” One whose name is always found in our list of “Individual Givers” had the pleasure of spending last Christmas in India and has sent an interesting picture of the Christmas celebration show ing what a factor the Sewing Guild boxes are in the Christmas cheer of that country. She wrote: “Have you ever at home seen grown women pleading for dolls? Have you seen this and more than this; have you seen men begging that to them also might be given these dolls that with us are thought of as gifts only suit able for little girls? This is what we saw, and it was a sight both interesting and pathetic, to see the joy depicted on the faces of these men and women when these much coveted treasures were put into their hands. Dr. Ida had said: 'Give dolls to all who want them,' and it was a real pleasure and privilege to place dolls in the hands of these women, and of these hard working coolies and receive their salaams as the expression of their thanks!” From one of the new hospitals comes this appreciative ac knowledgment: “The boxes were so generous and it was such a pleasure to receive them. I wish I could only begin to tell you how our hearts were gladdened at sight of the quantities of nice new bed linen and towels; the hospital gauze, cotton, bandages, soap, hot-water bags, etc., all so sorely needed and so welcome. Then I must not forget to mention the many petticoats and jackets which are every whit as much needed. I only wish that all the good givers across the seas might be witnesses of the joy and happiness their good gifts bring to so many of. their fellow creatures here. I trust that each one may experience the joy that comes from having ministered to ‘the least of His little ones’ and thus having ministered to Him.” Perhaps we have failed to recognize the educational advan tages there are in working intelligently for the Sewing Guild. We all know that the greatest obstacle to overcome in getting our people interested in foreign missionary work is ignorance. To know is to be interested. To be interested is to do. When a member of an auxiliary is handed a petticoat to hem she is interested to know who is to wear it. Learning that a little school girl in India will wear the garment, she inquires what kind of schools are there and who are in charge of them and thus one question leads to another until her interest in the petticoat has acquainted her with the deeper needs of the people. The Secretary of the Sewing Guild records with pleasure the benefits which have personally been obtained through association with this noble work. Suddenly forced to assume the responsi bilities of the office and to acquire in a brief time a working knowledge of the aims and duties of the society, it seemed at first an impossible task, yet in the very effort to perform the work efficiently and to understand these strange and far-away peoples, there has come an increase of knowledge, an enlargement of sympathy and breadth of vision quite unthinkable at the out set, and what in the beginning seemed a burden has proved in the end to have been a blessing in disguise. Among the many interesting experiences which came to me in my recent trip around the world, I place the visits to our mis sions as among the pleasantest of all. My work in. the Sewing Guild had acquainted me with the missionaries and their problems, their hopes and their joys and in *a sense had brought me into quick sympathy with the people themselves. Thus through the Sewing Guild as through other avenues we are drawing closer to these people, understanding them better, and helping them more effectively in their develop ment and surely this brings with it sufficient incentive to cause us to continue our work with unabated interest. Eleventh Annual Report With this report, the Young Woman’s Branch of the Synods of New York, New Brunswick and Albany closes its eleventh year of work. The meetings have been held regularly'once a month, with an average attendance of ten. One resignation was received and -one new member added to our list. The usual work has been carried on; letters were sent to King’s Daughters Circles, asking for contributions for the work at Kagoshina, Japan. Nineteen circles contributed. Twenty- six Young Women’s Societies responded to an appeal that was sent to them for the Parish work at Tong An, China. This year the members of the Branch pledged themselves to support a bed in the Mary Lott Lyles Memorial Hospital, at Madanapalle, India. The three Post-Jubilee Conferences for Young Women held in October in Schenectady, Albany and Kingston were well at tended and most helpful. ^ A union conference of the young women of Newark Classis was held in April, which gave Miss Van Doren, an opportunity to reach a large number of the young women of that section. On Saturday, March the second, in the parlor of the Marble Collegiate Church, the Seventh Annual Conference for Young Women, was held under the auspices of the Associate Members of the Women’s Board of Domestic Missions and the Young Woman’s Branch. It was considered one of the most success ful that had ever been given, as the attendance was very large and the program excellent. The Branch has, as usual, assisted the Woman’s Board at the Birthday Reception and in other ways. We pause here, to speak of the sorrow that has come to us this winter, when one of our beloved members, Miss Marguerite Imbrie, was called to her Eternal Home. She left us an ex ample of faithful service, which should certainly be an incen tive to all who knew her. Our Treasurer’s report shows the following: From King's Daughters Circles, for Kagoshima, Japan, $158.25; from Young Women's Societies, for Tong An, China, $399.25; gifts for Special Objects, $262.00, total, $819.50. Respectfully submitted E velina Deyo, • 25 Secretary. ANNUAL REPORT OF WESTERN BRANCH. The treasurer’s report, compared with that of last year,'shows another decrease. This year we have received $218.80 from twenty-five societies. Two of the classes have had a vacancy for more than a year, but we are glad to report that these vacan cies have now been filled. There is now one vacancy to be filled. The work of the Branch has been very much the same as other years, collecting money for the work in> Tong An, urging mission study, sending out the quarterly letters from our work ers in Tong An and also missionary leaflets on the work that is being done there. We regret that so few of the Young Ladies’,. Missionary Societies are having a share in helping this work along, and we hope that this coming year more of them will help us along so that next year we may be able to report great progress. Respectfully submitted, • H enrietta W arnshius, Secretary.

REPORT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF YOUNG PEOPLE'S WORK. ' ° The Fall Campaign was inaugurated by mailing plans for the Mission Study campaign to pastors and young people through out the denomination. This was followed by a letter to pas tors of churches in the vicinity of New York requesting the priv ilege of presenting Mission Study at their mid-week prayer meeting. At about the same time a communication was sent to Sunday School Superintendents asking for a larger place for missionary instruction in the Sunday School and appealing for more generous financial support of our work at home and abroad. Instead of holding strictly young people's conferences we decided to arrange conferences in the interests of Missionary Education. The first was held at Newburgh, N. Y., and the second at Newark, N. J. Twenty-two churches were represented at Newburgh, and forty at Newark; making a total of sixty-two churches reached in the interests of missionary education. We were favored in having as speakers Mr. R. E. DifFendorfer, Sunday School Secretary of the Missionary Education Move- ment; Rev. M. W. Ehnes, Educational Secretary Missionary Education Movement; Rev. W. E. Doughty, Educational Sec retary of the Laymen's Movement; Rev. Frank Eckerson, of China; Rev. Clifford P. Case, Rev. Irving H. Berg, Rev. A. E. Kittredge, D.D., Mr. William T. Demarest, Rev. A. T. Broek, and Rev. M. S. Purdy. The local arrangements in each case were all that could be desired. The interest stimulated through these conferences resulted in a large demand for missionary books and pamphlets of every description. Mission Study.—The letter to pastors opened up a number of prayer meetings for the presentation- of mission study. As a result of all this activity there was an increased interest along mission study lines. The foreign book of the year was “India Awakening/’ by Sherwood Eddy. In these days mission study is carried on under different auspices, and while the ideal is a regularly organized class meeting weekly, we cannot help but commend the effort which is being put forth by some of our young people to acquire this missionary information. In one church, a small organized class plans and executes the program for the, monthly missionary meeting, using the text-book, which they are studying, as a basis. Another Society has given over its monthly missionary meeting for the study in course of one of the textbooks under competent leadership. In another church, the Sunday School teachers were organized into a normal class and the material used in connection with the teaching of the reg ular Bible lesson. In these different ways the young people are becoming conversant with the great facts of missions, and are learning to use the knowledge in a practical way in connection with their own missionary meetings. Missionary Lessons for the Sunday School.—These- take the place of the regular quarterly review lesson. The foreign sub jects for the year were “Japan,” and “India.” The total circu lation for the year was 46,000 copies. Each lesson appeared in the columns of the “Intelligencer” the “Leaded1 and “De Hope” We are greatly indebted to the Rev. Henry J. Veldman for the preparation of the Scripture exposition in connection with each lesson, and to the Rev. Albertus Pieters, and Miss Alice Van Doren, for the preparation of the missionary material. It has also been our privilege to address a larger number of Sunday Schools during the past year than in any previous year. During the past five years the contributions from Sunday Schools to the Missionary Boards have increased nineteen per cent. We trust that the increased activities along missionary lines will con tinue to manifest itself in a still larger increase in missionary contributions. Literature—We have continued the publication of the Les ! son Leaflets issued under the auspices of the two Women's Boards. “The Village of the Milky River,” was the subject of the foreign leaflet. We have also continued the publication in the Mission Field of the missionary program for use in young people's societies. The frequent requests for literature is evi dence of their use. ' The two Missionary Dramas, “A Ruler in India,” and “A Rice Christian,” are still being circulated. A new form of liter ature has been the publication of a sheet o f missionary pictures for use in scrap books, calendars and the like. * Time has been given to a small extent to various denomina tional and interdenominational movements. We rejoice in all these various spheres of usefulness and look forward to in creased opportunities. . Respectfully submitted, H. A. K inports, Secretary. BABY ROLL. As we clasp together our “Baby Chain,” at the close of4 another year, we find it contains three thousand and five hundred and sixty-five links. One hundred and sixty-seven of these have been added during the past year, and so the chain keeps growing. It is not a Daisy Chain, but as I have said a Baby Chain, a living chain, composed of a variety of dear little buds, and blossoms whom we are endeavoring to have trained and nourished to bear fruit in the garden of our Lord. There are black eyed Susans, rosy checked Clovers, blue eyed Violets, sweet Williams, fair Lillies, Rosemary’s, Myrtles and a host of others all equally attractive. When our little ones enter this world they come with souls ~ pure and spotless, minds ready and eager to grasp anything that comes to their notice, and their characters improved. At this time early impressions count for so much, a fact we should never lose sight of. Effort ought always to be made to surround these young lives with the best and holiest influences, and what better means can you find, dear mothers, than by early conse crating them to the Lord’s service, and through the “Baby Roll.” Through you the little membership fee is given, and this is used toward the support of “The Pity Little Children Home” at Amoy to help sow the seed of Christian training among the little heathen girls who have found a shelter there, and are under the care and training of our missionaries. Help us to add more links to the chain! Let your little ones join in the hand clasp that shall bind them from childhood and infancy to a life of thoughtfulness and service for the Master, and instill in them a real missionary spirit. During the past year a new interest has been shown in many of our societies, some have lagged and a few new ones have fal len in line. I have received some very beautiful and touching letters—letters that have given me an insight into the home life of some of our Western people. They certainly pay great atten tion to the religious training of their children and are most par ticular in regard to a strict observance of the Sabbath. Then I have had letters from sorrowing mothers whose little ones have been called to join the “Roll up Yonder” telling me what com fort they found in the thought that their names were on the “Baby Roll” and how they valued the little membership cards. The “Baby Roll” admits of very little variety in its reports and I shall only add that while the work has not been taken up by our churches and societies as,it should be it is gratifying to find a nice increase in our receipts of this year over last.
