Social scientists have always played a great role in the development of a country. The path of new technological advancements goes through the social sciences.A social scientist has the power to change the whole world and shape the society. For example, social scientists like Ibn K haldun, Adam Smith, Jean Jacques Rousseau influenced the masses in the world. With their innovative ideas, society has found its way. Language, economy, culture, social changes, history et al are the corner stones of social sciences.Social sciences include Psychology, Theology, Sociology, Linguistics, Archeology, Geography, History, International Relations, Law, Political Science, Philosophy. All these science branches meet qualified man power for society. Social development is provided by qualified man power. Social Sciences deals with the reality created by human beings. The main purpose of the Social Sciences is to help people to develop the ability to make logical decisions, based on knowledge in the public interest. The aim of the social sciences is not only to understand social events, but tochan ge the society in a desired way, to increase the quality of life and culture of the society. Dr. Mustafa TALAS Dr. Abdullah KARATAS Mustafa Latif EMEK 3 CURRENT STUDIES OVER SOCIAL SCIENCES CHAPTER 1: A DIFFERENT STUDIO EXPERIENCE IN ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION: TO BE INTEGRATED INTO THE COMPETITION PROCESS Dr. İbrahim Türkeri Lecturer, Gebze Technical University, [email protected] Introduction Having perceived as ‘the battle fields where opponent minds and uncompromising solutions fight are the grand design studios with intangible boundaries’ (Lipstad,1989), the challenge is to set a venue for experiencing the unimagined. This paper emphasizes the dilemma of teaching as well as staying up-to-date and sensing the ‘zeitgeist’ of architectural design. The studio experience by integration of a student competition that was in the agenda at the time is tackled through the tension between the demands of the studio and essentials of a design competition. The endeavour is to initiate architectural design in the competition frame. Competitions constitute a tool to produce a valuable end-product as well as their dynamic nature providing a continuum in the architectural perspective. So the competition participation is included into the design studio teaching. In other words; architectural competition process is considered to be the main enquiry and leading theme of the design studio. As ‘the architect learns by making, learning by doing and thinking in acting’ (Schön, 1987), the competition participation is perceived as a different way of learning. Architectural design studio is often undertaken via conventional ‘iteration by critiques’ method in architectural schools. Implication of competition to the studio process introduces a possibility to break through these static teaching patterns. Statement of the design problem externally establishes a fixed distance to the question for the student and the tutor. The competition specifications determine the deadline, the requested design work and the programme; as the studio tutor plays the role of design consultants. However, due to the flexible framework of the competition, it is not considered to be the main guideline, but formulated as a part in the whole production process .Besides sharing personal experiences, design consultants provide insights.

Abstract: Bediuzzaman Said Nursi was a profound Muslim thinker and revivalist, whose teachings (Risale-i Nur) and ideology are still being followed today. His life is full of enthusiasm and energy through his contribution to the maturation and development of Turkish society. He encountered problems similar to those faced by other Muslim thinkers in other parts of the Islamic world in the 19th century. Nursi was arrested several times and tried on charges of trying to organize an Islamic political party but he was always acquitted by the courts. He lived a life of struggle and harassment but never acted violently and never allowed his students to respond with violence unlike many other Muslim reformers and thinkers. He created a strong, but nonviolent, movement. The strong opposition of the government to religion as opposed to Nursi’s firm stand against any irreligiosity certainly made him a symbol of religious movement in Turkey.     The Dispossession of Ottoman Armenians during the World War I Genocide Dr. Uğur Ümit Üngör Associate Professor Department of History Utrecht University This paper traces the Turkish government’s economic policies towards the Armenian population from the Young Turk coup d’état in 1913 to the fall of the regime in 1918. It will chart how this policy moved from boycott to discrimination, into confiscation and outright plunder, resulting in the mass pauperization of the victims. It identifies main currents and developments of this ruthless policy and how it affected Ottoman Armenian communities. The boycott movement Well before the war, the hawks within the Committee of Union and Progress urged peremptorily for the nationalist ideology to be translated into real economic action. The CUP launched a boycott movement against Western businesses as well as Ottoman Christians. In the period 1911-1914, the scope of the boycott movement gradually expanded and intensified. Initially economic boycotts were initiated against Habsburg businesses, soon to be followed by boycotts of Greek merchants, and in early 1914 ultimately also employed against Armenians. In a painstaking study of the boycott movement in the Ottoman Empire, Doğan Çetinkaya has concluded that the boycotts enjoyed the endorsement among wide circles of supporters, including port workers, immigrants, merchants, urban notables, low-ranking officers, professional classes, and peasants. The boycotts were truly a national project, a mass movement that transcended the antipathies and struggles that may have existed between classes. United in a tightly-organized empire-wide network, local trading networks and traditional guild organizations joined hands in the movement.

He sacrificed his life for the preservation of Islam in a society dominated by westernization and secularization. Throughout his life, he encountered significant reformations and revolutions in political, educational and social aspects. The present study focuses on the impact of Nursi’s political movement that he established. To conclude, Nursi’s political movement and struggles in the society investigate to understand the roots and subsequent growth of the contemporary Nur community and their movement which has spread all over Turkey and different parts of the world. Charisma and leadership attracted the attention of many scholars, politicians and the masses of his time. After his death in 1960, this charisma, reflected in his texts and movement, continued to attract the attention of all levels of society, young and old alike. Keywords: The Old Sa’id, Nursi, Turkey. INTRODUCTION Bediüzzaman Said Nursi divided his life time into three significant periods namely, the Old Sa’id, the New Sa’id and the Third Sa’id period. This ambitious research project aims at identifying Turks and Kurds that reached out to the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The main mission of the IRWF is to unveil untold stories of rescue and solidarity. The issue of the Muslim rescuers who went out of their way to save Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century was not properly studied yet and, thus, is an unchartered territory waiting to be discovered. It is a great honor to join forces with Professor Taner Akcam, a world-renowned Turkish historian and sociologist who has devoted his efforts to try and reconcile the narratives of the Armenian and Turks, and his chair at the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. This is a unique attempt to identify and honor the many Turks and Kurds that lent a hand to their Armenian neighbors in one of the darkest periods of mankind. The Wallenberg Foundation does the same concerning the Holocaust. Rather than focusing on the evil, our NGO strives to highlight the spirit of solidarity of the women and men who, like Raoul Wallenberg, oftentimes risked their own lives to save others.

    Britain’s Policy toward Kurdistan* at the End of the First World War İhsan Şerif Kaymaz** Abstract : In the aftermath of the First World War, Britain aimed to create an au- tonomous Kurdish state – or states – in the northern Mesopotamia to be governed under its protection. It therefore experimented with various different methods between the years 1918 and 1920. All those attempts were proven futile. Using mainly the British and Ottoman archival ma- terial, it has been inquired how the British authorities had developed the plan for Kurdistan, how they tried to implement it in the northern Iraq (then the Mosul vilayet) and the southeastern Anatolia respec- tively, and how they failed. The reasons for Britain’s failure had been discussed. After the failure, new policy options had been given con- sideration among which the debates on retreat came into prominence. The diplomatic negotiation process between the allies and the legal ar- rangements on Kurdistan that took pace in the Treaty of Sevres was of a nature of keeping up appearances. The Kurdistan plan, though failed in 1920s, gained ground in the following years as the international conditions became more convenient. First, it focuses on three different periods of Nursi’s struggles in Turkish society to provide a general view of its eastern and western parts. The impact of Nursi’s political, intellectual and spiritual life had a significant influence on the political and social movements that he established.     Armenian Genocide The Silenced Extermination To the Reader You have every right to wonder what I have to do with the Armenians and why I should have decided, at the age of 86, to investigate the extermination they suffered as of 1915 at the hands of the Ottomans and Turks. It is not hard to understand. I grew up as a teenager during the war against the Nazi reign of terror and my Jewish roots led me to take part in militant activities in a youth organization that sought to create awareness in a small neighborhood of the city of Buenos Aires as regards the danger to humanity should Hitler and his supporters conquer the world. Only a few years after the defeat of the Third Reich I was able to travel to Germany and see the rubble in the streets of Berlin, the Reichstag gutted by fire, women driving tramways because the Nazis had condemned to death in foreign lands several generations of men trained to wipe six million Jews off the face of the earth, along with one million gypsies, thousands of democratic politicians, and many others, including the mentally retarded, homosexuals and disabled. The 20th century was a genocidal century. Large-scale genocides began with the massacre of 1,500,000 Armenians and over the following two decades the Nazis instrumented the Shoah. The Jewish genocide was judged at Nuremberg, but Raphael Lemkin, the Polish-Jewish lawyer who created the term “genocide”, had already issued the warning before the Shoah: do not forget the Armenian extermination. My mother, Paulina, lived in Odesa during the Tsarist regime.
