Dalia Iskander This thesis explores malaria in the municipality of Bataraza in the Philippines. It shows how multiple versions of malaria exist inside (and in between) various bodies. These malarias are situated in both time and space, emerge interrelationally and are enacted through embodied practice. It focuses on young people in this context and shows how their identity is similarly enacted through practice. With this in mind, the thesis critically examines how photovoice, a participatory action research method can be used to both depict young people’s malaria-related health practice as well as potentially alter it. During a 15-week photovoice project, 44 school-going children took photographs of their lived experience of different malarias and worked in groups to identify possible changes they might make. As a result of engaging in the photovoice process, young people’s interactions with each other and their families appeared to change as well as their role in promoting health in relation to others. However, in contrast to the literature that highlights the ability of approaches like photovoice to ‘empower’ individuals to make changes to their lives by generating critical consciousness, this thesis makes a unique theoretical contribution by suggesting that photovoice might be effective precisely because it directly operates at and therefore interacts with the level of situated, relational and embodied practice.     Southeast Asian Traditions in the Philippines1 Lawrence A. Reid University of Hawai`i Introduction The Philippines today is home to over one hundred different ethnolinguistic groups. These range from the Arta, a tiny group of Negrito hunter-gatherers with only about a dozen remaining speakers, living under highly adverse conditions in Quirino Province, to the 12,000,000 or so Tagalogs, a very diverse group primarily professing Catholicism, centered around Metro-Manila and surrounding provinces, but also widely dispersed throughout the archipelago. In between there are a wide range of traditional societies living in isolated areas, such as in the steep mountains of the Cordillera Central and the Sierra Madre of Northern Luzon, still attempting to follow their pre-Hispanic cultural practices amid the onslaught of modern civilization. And in the Southern Philippines there are the societies, who, having converted to Islam only shortly before Magellan arrived, today feel a closer allegiance to Mecca than they do to Manila. These peoples, despite the disparate nature of their cultures, all have one thing in common. They share a common linguistic tradition. All of their languages belong to the Austronesian language family, whose sister languages are spread from Madagascar off the east coast of Africa, through the Indo-Malaysian Archipelago, scattered through the mountains of South Vietnam and Kampuchea as far north as Hainan Island and Taiwan, and out into the Pacific through the hundreds of islands of the Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian areas. The question of how all these languages are related to one another, where their parent language may have been spoken, and what the migration routes were that their ancestors followed to bring them to their present locations has occupied scholars for well over a hundred years.

REYES The Komiks and Retelling the Lore of the Folk Komiks (comics), which emerged in the 1920s, have captured the Filipinos’ imagination, subsequently becoming materials for major motion pictures, yet marginalized in cultural studies. This article offers a diachronic analysis of the komiks between the 1930s and the 1970s to reveal the relationship between selected komiks characters and the folk tradition embodied in epics and legends. It also explains the komiks writers’ fascination with the remote past and their construction of heroes and heroines. In illuminating the worldview of writers and readers and the meanings generated when texts and readers interact, this article problematizes the supposition that popular culture is unalloyed escapism.     Mano Po: Chinoys in Philippine Pop Movies By: Charles Chua and Talizta Ang Way back in 2002, a local film released around Christmas time won the hearts of moviegoers all over the country. This film then proceeded to garner an accumulation of several awards, honors and commendations because of its deep cultural references and implications. This film was Mano Po, a heavily political movie with a drama plot that supposedly gives a glimpse of the Chinese, Chinese Filipino and Filipino communities and their problems in coexisting with one another, primarily because of the differences in culture that no amount of compromise can ever seem to mend. These clashes in culture were popular with movie-goers and inevitably spawned several sequels. The original Mano Po is the story of the affluent Go clan and its “black sheep” Richelle. As she strains against the bonds of Chinese tradition that keep her from what she truly wants, she becomes intertwined in a series of events that puts the reputation of her clan and its Filipino political relations in peril. Narrowly escaping with her life after the ordeal, the lessons learned by her family members pushes the clan to reexamine their priorities and ultimately turn over a new leaf in their lifestyles. Like the original, the first sequel was met with much success. The next movie in the series, Mano Po 2: My Home, is a completely new story about a rich Chinese businessman with three separate wives. His untimely demise, however, only heightens the already immense tensions that have been present among the ladies for so long.
