  • Why Wonder Woman Matters
Why Wonder Woman Matters When I was a kid, being a hero seemed like the easiest thing in the world to be- A Blue Beetle quote from the DC Comics publication The OMAC Project. Introduction The superhero is one of modern American culture’s most popular and pervasive myths. Though the primary medium, the comic book, is often derided as juvenile or material fit for illiterates the superhero narrative maintains a persistent presence in popular culture through films, television, posters and other mediums. There is a great power in the myth of the superhero. The question “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” could be answered simply. Wonder Woman matters because she is a member of this pantheon of modern American gods. Wonder Woman, along with her cohorts Batman and Superman represent societal ideals and provide colorful reminders of how powerful these ideals can be.1 This answer is compelling, but it ignores Wonder Woman’s often turbulent publication history. In contrast with titles starring Batman or Superman, Wonder Woman comic books have often sold poorly. Further, Wonder Woman does not have quite the presence that Batman and Superman both share in popular culture.2 Any other character under similar circumstances—poor sales, lack of direction and near constant revisions—would have been killed off or quietly faded into the background. Yet, Wonder Woman continues to persist as an important figure both within her comic universe and in our popular consciousness. “Why does Wonder Woman matter?” To answer this question an understanding of the superhero and their primary medium, the comic book, is required, Wonder Woman is a comic book character, and her existence in the popular consciousness largely depends on how she is presented within the conventions of the comic book superhero narrative.

Advisor: Rebecca Vargha This paper analyzes the representation of women in wartime era comics during World War Two (1941-1945) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2001-2010). The questions addressed are: In what ways are women represented in WWII era comic books? What ways are they represented in Post 9/11 comic books? How are the representations similar or different? In what ways did the outside war environment influence the depiction of women in these comic books? In what ways did the comic books influence the women in the war outside the comic pages? This research will closely examine two vital periods in the publications of comic books. The World War II era includes the genesis and development to the first war-themed comics. In addition many classic comic characters were introduced during this time period. In the post-9/11 and Operation Iraqi Freedom time period war-themed comics reemerged as the dominant format of comics. ABSTRACT Comics are an integral aspect of America's development and culture. The comics have chronicled historical milestones, determined fashion and shaped the way society viewed events and issues. They also offered entertainment and escape. The comics were particularly effective in providing heroes for Americans of all ages. One of those heroes -- or more accurately, superheroes -- is the Batman. A crime-fighting, masked avenger, the Batman was one of few comic characters that survived more than a half-century of changes in the country. Unlike his counterpart and rival -- Superman -- the Batman's popularity has been attributed to his embodiment of human qualities. Thus, as a hero, the Batman says something about the culture for which he is an ideal. The character's longevity and the alterations he endured offer a glimpse into the society that invoked the transformations.

Abstract: Comics enlighten the fact in a light manner with a serious theme to it. Wonder Woman very much serves the purpose of the article that emphasizes on the importance of women, the value of women, the superior thought of a woman with awe-inspiring nature and characteristics that eventually demonstrate ‘Feminism’ or invaluable women around. The work is significant as the protagonist is a woman with invincible herself without any fear, facing her own world of the living and also another world where patriarchy narrates itself. There are mixed methods in the article that have been used i.e. some experiments shown in 2017 The Wonder Woman movie and some secondary data have been collected from websites and sites. • Lepore, Jill. the Secret History of Wonder Woman. New York: Knopf, 2014
Lepore, Jill. The Secret History of Wonder Woman. New York: Knopf, 2014. 408 pp. $29.95. As authorship studies progresses as a discipline, it is becoming increasingly evident that it should not limit itself to studies of single authors and their body of work. Jill Lepore’s The Secret History of Wonder Woman has been described as a biography of both Wonder Woman and her creator William Moulton Marston. A biography of an author can be of interest to the field of authorship studies in its own right, but it is the categorization of the text as a biography of a fictional character that is most fascinating and of interest to authorship scholars. Although Lepore, a historian, does not purport to be an authorship— or even a literary—scholar, her historical examination of the creation of Wonder Woman holds potential for authorship scholars because it functions as an exploration of the multifaceted authorship behind a single character. In keeping with the comics theme, Lepore provides a “Splash Page” in place of a traditional introduction. Here, Lepore asserts that Wonder Woman is “the missing link in a chain of events that begins with the woman suffrage campaigns of the 1910s and ends with the troubled place of feminism fully a century later” (xiii). Lepore divides her book into three parts and an epilogue. Authorship scholars will find the third section of the most interest, as Lepore discusses the tangible authorial influences on Wonder Woman’s creation and early comics, but that does not mean they should skip the previous ones. The first two sections of the book, “Veritas” and “Family Circle,” form a biographical sketch of Marston, his family, and the life influences that lead up to and influence the creation of Wonder Woman.
