An outstanding studyBy Robert M. WeissThis is probably the best book ever written about a character actress. The scholarship is impeccable. The book displays a gold mine of photos that capture the subject's life and times in vivid detail. The author's background as an amateur genealogist serves Turner well, as he delves not only into Verna's life, but virtually all the people who were a part of her life as well. The book contains numerous digressions, which may interrupt the narrative flow, but are fascinating in their own right. We know Verna as the kindly fairy godmother of Disney's Cinderella, Aunt Sarah in Disney's Lady and the Tramp, and the good fairy Flora in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. Some of us remember her as Hilda Crocker in the 50s television program, December Bride, a precursor of Golden Girls. But as Turner relates, Verna was so much more. Her work in small theaters in the U.S. and Canada, her relationship with neighborhood children, her zest for life, all are depicted clearly in this encyclopedic volume. Try picking it up. You might find answers to some of your questions about character actors.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful!!By D. HurtMr. Tucker's book on the life of Verna Felton is wonderful. By the time I finished reading it I felt like I knew Verna Felton personally and that she was a close friend. His in-depth look at every aspect of her life is just the type of up close and personal biography I love to read. I can't imagine finding a more thorough or comprehensive look at her life as Mr. Tucker brings us.I also loved the way Mr. Tucker made me feel like I was there in each and every city with Verna. His descriptions of the theaters she played and his skill for bringing you the feel and look of those cities is extremely impressive as he goes into deep detail into making you feel as if you're being given a guided tour.I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. The photos alone are worth the price of the book and the many fun stories Mr. Tucker relates makes this a can't miss book. If you like a truly complete look at a person's life, Mr. Tucker's treatment of Verna Felton's is outstanding. She was a fun, wonderful character actor that I have always loved since first seeing her on December Bride. Her love for acting and life in general is very well documented through Mr. Tucker's hard work. I'm extremely grateful he shared her wonderful history with us.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. So Beautifully Written!By HappyinBuckeyeVery detailed and beautifully written. Someone needs to put these people in the spotlight. So many people don't recognize them or forget them. A wonderful memoir! Today Verna Felton is most remembered for the voice characterizations she created for six Walt Disney features, but this biography reveals a varied career spanning sixty-five years. Twice nominated for an Emmy, Verna endeared herself to TV audiences of the 1950s as Hilda Crocker on Desilu's December Bride. Before that, she was in constant demand as a radio voice artist, supporting the likes of Jack Benny, Judy Canova, and Red Skelton. Fredrick Tucker chronicles her rise to fame, from phenomenal child actress to her final quarter century as one of Hollywood's most beloved character actresses. The book also features an abundance of rare photographs and several appendices, including a never-before-published episode guide for December Bride. "Filled with a wealth of detail and a sense of respect and admiration...A successful biography offers the reader an intimate glimpse of the author's obsession. This volume clearly accomplishes that goal." --Radiogram, February 2011, p. 4From the Author Why write a biography of Verna Felton? I was consistently asked this question not only in casual conversations but also during interviews with individuals who actually knew the actress. One questioned whether there was an audience for such a book "in a world much changed" since Verna Felton's heyday. Another suggested that she did not deserve a book of her own but perhaps rather an inclusion in one that featured career profiles of sitcom second bananas. Yet another doubted that there was much of a story to tell at all. Such talk only provided more fuel for my research. However, I did not know much about Miss Felton's background when I was asked to write her biography. I had fallen in love with her characterization of Hilda Crocker on TV's December Bride when I was no more than six years old, and from time to time, I caught some of her movies on television. I had tried to find out more about her, but like so many other supporting players, Miss Felton remained overlooked by contemporary film historians. Delving into her background, I discovered that Verna Felton had led a most interesting life. As an amateur genealogist, I got swept up in her family history as well. While the average reader may consider some content as superfluous, I have chosen to include detailed information regarding my subject's relatives and intimates because their life stories might never be recorded otherwise. Verna Felton's career spanned sixty-five years and encompassed nearly thirty years of stage appearances, countless radio credits, a top-ten television series, and twenty-four films---including six Disney classics. Why not write a biography of Verna Felton? From the Back CoverFredrick Tucker has been a Verna Felton fan for over forty-five years. When not teaching history to sixth graders, he, like the actress, collects vintage hats. This is his first biography. • America's Favorite Clown
America’s Favorite Clown by Helmut M. Schuster - Millennium Council #382 July 30, 2008 Richard Bernard “Red” Skelton was an American comedian who was best known as a top radio and television star from 1937 to 1971. His show business career began in his teens as a circus clown and went on to vaudeville, Broadway, films, radio, TV, clubs and casinos, while pursuing another career as a painter. Born in Vincennes, Indiana, on July 18, 1913, Red Skelton was the son of a Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus clown named Joe who died in 1913 shortly before the birth of his son. Red Skelton himself got one of his earliest tastes of show business with the same circus as a teenager. Before that, however, he had been given the show business bug at age ten by entertainer Ed Wynn, who spotted him selling newspapers in front of the Pantheon Theatre, in Vincennes, Indiana, trying to help his family. After buying every newspaper in Red's stock, Wynn took the boy backstage and introduced him to every member of the show with which he was traveling. By age 15, Red Skelton had hit the road full-time as an entertainer, working everywhere from medicine shows and vaudeville to burlesque, showboats, minstrel shows and circuses. While performing in Kansas City in 1930, Skelton met and married his first wife, Edna Stillwell. The couple divorced 13 years later, but they remained cordial enough that Edna remained one of his chief writers. Skelton caught his big break in two medias at once: radio and film. In 1938 he made his film debut for RKO Radio Pictures, in the supporting role of a camp counselor in Having Wonderful Time, Two short subjects followed for Vitaphone in 1939: Seeing Red and The Bashful Buckaroo.

The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

  • Nancy Felton Koster 1963
Descendants of Nathaniel Felton who came to Salem, Massachusetts in 16 33 NANCY FELTON KOSTER 1963 FOREWORD This book is primarily an extension of the Felton Genealogies published in 1886 and in 1935 by Cyrus-Felton and by William Reid -Felton. _ In order to establish a relationship with these earlier books, I have used essentially the same format. Space limitation has made it impossible to repeat all the family histories of the earlier generations. I have therefore condensed the first seven into merely names and numbers and have deleted some material from the eighth generation. Full biographical details about persons in these eight genera tions may be fo\llld in the 1935 edition of the genealogy. Lest the book be just a record of vital statistics, I have included supplementary his torical, biographical, and anecdotal material wherever I thought it would make interesting reading. This has all been impersonally gath ered and is objectively presented. Our family truly represents a ~ross sec tion of American life over a period of three hundred and thirty years. If they serve no other purpose, my records may be of assistance to those who wish to carry on researches into the history of the Felton and allied families farther than I have done. Nancy Felton Koster Ridgecrest February 28, 1963. A WORD OF EXPLANATION Whether or not one has a copy of the 1935 edition of the genealogy, a few words about the numbering system seem to be called for in order to make this book comprehensible, particularly in the early generations. To make reference to the 1935 edition ea_sy I have given, in parentheses, each person•s num ber as it appears in that book.

Trivia William Frawley , aka "Fred Mertz", had a well known and longtime issue with alcoholism. He was advised in the beginning of the series to stay sober, or be terminated. So, if you look closely, a majority of his scenes display his character having his hands deep in his pockets. This would therefore not show his hands trembling, due to his alcoholic withdrawals. Goofs The Ricardos are said to live in an apartment at East 68th Street, which in real life would be located in the East River. This is not actually a 'goof' because it was done deliberately to avoid legal issues with an actual address. Quotes Lucy Ricardo : How much do you want to bet? Fred Mertz : Ten dollars.
