Schuster - Millennium Council #382 July 30, 2008 Richard Bernard “Red” Skelton was an American comedian who was best known as a top radio and television star from 1937 to 1971. His show business career began in his teens as a circus clown and went on to vaudeville, Broadway, films, radio, TV, clubs and casinos, while pursuing another career as a painter. Born in Vincennes, Indiana, on July 18, 1913, Red Skelton was the son of a Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus clown named Joe who died in 1913 shortly before the birth of his son. Red Skelton himself got one of his earliest tastes of show business with the same circus as a teenager. Before that, however, he had been given the show business bug at age ten by entertainer Ed Wynn, who spotted him selling newspapers in front of the Pantheon Theatre, in Vincennes, Indiana, trying to help his family. After buying every newspaper in Red's stock, Wynn took the boy backstage and introduced him to every member of the show with which he was traveling. By age 15, Red Skelton had hit the road full-time as an entertainer, working everywhere from medicine shows and vaudeville to burlesque, showboats, minstrel shows and circuses. While performing in Kansas City in 1930, Skelton met and married his first wife, Edna Stillwell. The couple divorced 13 years later, but they remained cordial enough that Edna remained one of his chief writers. Skelton caught his big break in two medias at once: radio and film. In 1938 he made his film debut for RKO Radio Pictures, in the supporting role of a camp counselor in Having Wonderful Time, Two short subjects followed for Vitaphone in 1939: Seeing Red and The Bashful Buckaroo.

The three performances that I examine are: George M. Cohan’s production of Little Johnny ii Jones (1904), Eleanor Powell’s “Tribute to Bill Robinson” in Honolulu (1939), and Terry- Toons’ cartoon, “The Dancing Shoes” (1949). These performances share an obvious move away from the use of blackface makeup within a minstrel context, and a move towards the masked enjoyment in “black culture” as it contributes to the development of a uniquely American form of entertainment. In bringing these three disparate performances into dialogue I illuminate the many ways in which American entertainment has been built upon an Africanist aesthetic at the same time it has generally disparaged the black body.

    Descendants of Nathaniel Felton who came to Salem, Massachusetts in 16 33 NANCY FELTON KOSTER 1963 FOREWORD This book is primarily an extension of the Felton Genealogies published in 1886 and in 1935 by Cyrus-Felton and by William Reid -Felton. _ In order to establish a relationship with these earlier books, I have used essentially the same format. Space limitation has made it impossible to repeat all the family histories of the earlier generations. I have therefore condensed the first seven into merely names and numbers and have deleted some material from the eighth generation. Full biographical details about persons in these eight genera­ tions may be fo\llld in the 1935 edition of the genealogy. Lest the book be just a record of vital statistics, I have included supplementary his­ torical, biographical, and anecdotal material wherever I thought it would make interesting reading. This has all been impersonally gath­ ered and is objectively presented. Our family truly represents a ~ross sec­ tion of American life over a period of three hundred and thirty years. If they serve no other purpose, my records may be of assistance to those who wish to carry on researches into the history of the Felton and allied families farther than I have done.
