The Wizard of Oz; Professor Marvel (Played by Frank Morgan) Who’s Who, here and in Oz People ● Dorothy Gaylord: librarian and narrator. She has a small birthmark (the kiss of good from Glinda) on her forehead. OZ NAME: Dorothy Gale. ● Glynnis Wickman Samuel: Mina’s mother and ex-wife to Mina’s father. Remarried Billy Samuel after divorce. OZ NAME: Good Witch of the South (Glinda). ● Wanda Wilhelmina Wickman (“Mina”): Glynnis’ daughter and stepsister to Wade. OZ NAME: Wicked Witch of the West. Winky, her dog. OZ CONNECTION: The WWW enslaved the Winkies. ● William Wickman: Mina’s father. He kept a journal about people in town (his “Book of Records”) which Glynnis inherited. OZ CONNECTION: Glinda has a Great Book of Records, detailing all that happens in Oz. ● Wade Watson Esterson: Mina’s stepbrother. His mother and Mina’s father had an affair and later married. OZ NAME: Wicked Witch of the East. ● Jack Tinsley: FBI agent who comes to town investigating the Wickeds (motorcycle gang). Jack has a heart condition that he’s kept a secret from his superiors. OZ NAME: Tin Man (played by Jack Haley in the movie). ● Drew Strawn: Chief of Police in Broomfield and ex-lover of Dorothy (in high school). Drew acts a bit slow-witted but he’s really very sharp. OZ NAME: Scarecrow (Hunk Andrews, the hired man). ● Leo Burt: Dorothy’s neighbor and close friend. He runs the beauty shop (the Salon of Oohs and Ahs) in the Emerald Hills Mall. OZ NAME: Cowardly Lion (played by Bert Lahr). ● Professor Morgan Franke: “The Professor”. Retired across-the-street neighbor. OZ NAME: The Wizard of Oz; Professor Marvel (played by Frank Morgan). ● Melissa Claire (Auntie M): runs an animal sanctuary. Her brother-in-law & his wife were killed, leaving their daughter an orphan. Mel & her husband took in the child (see Baby Dot). OZ NAME: Emily Gale (“Auntie Em,” played by Clara Blandick in the movie). Note that Auntie M is color blind (just as the scenes with Clara Blandick were shot in black & white). ● Hank Claire: Mel’s husband and owner of the hardware store. OZ NAME: Uncle Henry, Dorothy’s uncle in the movie. ● “Baby Dot” Claire: Hank’s niece whom Mel and Hank are raising. (NO OZ COUNTERPART) ● Judge O. OZ NAME: Tik Tok (Ozma of Oz). ● Sawyer Hornsby: semi-retired lawyer in town, secretly in love with Judge MacKendrick. OZ NAME: Saw Horse (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Ginger Majors: police deputy, running for mayor. OZ NAME: Jinjur (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Ben Brightman: Kim Gilley’s boyfriend. Animals ● SoSo the cat: Toto the dog ● Jim: rescued horse (Jim the horse, from Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz) ● King and his compatriots: rescued research monkeys (the flying monkeys).     Quadling Country The Quadling Country is the southern portion of Oz. The people there favor the color red. It is ruled by the Good Witch of the South, Glinda the Good. Bunbury The path to Bunbury seemed little traveled, but it was distinct enough and ran through the trees in a zigzag course until it finally led them to an open space filled with the queerest houses Dorothy had ever seen. They were all made of crackers laid out in tiny squares, and were of many pretty and ornamental shapes, having balconies and porches with posts of bread-sticks and roofs shingled with wafer- crackers. There were walks of bread-crusts leading from house to house and forming streets, and the place seemed to have many inhabitants. When Dorothy, followed by Billina and Toto, entered the place, they found people walking the streets or assembled in groups talking together, or sitting upon the porches and balconies. And what funny people they were! Men, women and children were all made of buns and bread. Some were thin and others fat; some were white, some light brown and some very dark of complexion. A few of the buns, which seemed to form the more important class of the people, were neatly frosted. Some had raisins for eyes and currant buttons on their clothes; others had eyes of cloves and legs of stick cinnamon, and many wore hats and bonnets frosted pink and green. -- The Emerald City of Oz Although it’s not clear if Glinda was responsible for the creation of Bunbury, it is definitely possible.

Around Ozma's throne, on such occasions, are grouped all the important personages of Oz, such as the Scarecrow, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tiktok the Clockwork Man, the Tin Woodman, the Wizard of Oz, the Shaggy Man and other famous fairy people. Little Dorothy usually has a seat at Ozma's feet, and crouched on either side the throne are two enormous beasts known as the Hungry Tiger and the Cowardly Lion. These two beasts are Ozma's chief guardians, but as everyone loves the beautiful girl Princess there has never been any disturbance in the great Throne Room, or anything for the guardians to do but look fierce and solemn and keep quiet until the Royal Audience is over and the people go away to their homes. Of course no one would dare be naughty while the huge Lion and Tiger crouched beside the throne; but the fact is, the people of Oz are very seldom naughty.

Then he discovered that he was hungry and the crackers and cheese he had provided for the Journey had all been eaten. While wondering what he should do in this emergency he came upon a girl sitting by the roadside. She wore a costume that struck the boy as being remarkably brilliant: her silken waist being of emerald green and her skirt of four distinct colors--blue in front, yellow at the left side, red at the back and purple at the right side. Fastening the waist in front were four buttons--the top one blue, the next yellow, a third red and the last purple. The splendor of this dress was almost barbaric; so Tip was fully justified in staring at the gown for some moments before his eyes were attracted by the pretty face above it. Yes, the face was pretty enough, he decided; but it wore an expression of discontent coupled to a shade of defiance or audacity. While the boy stared the girl looked upon him calmly. A lunch basket stood beside her, and she held a dainty sandwich in one hand and a hard-boiled egg in the other, eating with an evident appetite that aroused Tip's sympathy. 62 He was just about to ask a share of the luncheon when the girl stood up and brushed the crumbs from her lap.

That made it rain in a certain part of the country--a real hard shower, for a time--and sent the Rainbow scampering to the place to show the gorgeous colors of his glorious bow as soon as the mist of rain had passed and the sky was clear. The coming of the Rainbow is always a joyous event to earth folk, yet few have ever seen it close by. Usually the Rainbow is so far distant that you can observe its splendid hues but dimly, and that is why we seldom catch sight of the dancing Daughters of the Rainbow. In the barren country where the rain had just fallen there appeared to be no human beings at all; but the Rainbow appeared, just the same, and dancing gayly upon its arch were the Rainbow's Daughters, led by the fairylike Polychrome, who is so dainty and beautiful that no girl has ever quite equalled her in loveliness. Polychrome was in a merry mood and danced down the arch of the bow to the ground, daring her sisters to follow her. Laughing and gleeful, they also touched the ground with their twinkling feet; but all the Daughters of the Rainbow knew that this was a dangerous pastime, so 53 they quickly climbed upon their bow again. All but Polychrome. Though the sweetest and merriest of them all, she was likewise the most reckless. Moreover, it was an unusual sensation to pat the cold, damp earth with her rosy toes.

UGU The Wicked Witch never made me ride a crazy wooden horse without a stop button. FARAMANT She had a dragon! UGU And the Sawhorse is scarier. FARAMANT Right. (he climbs off himself and examines the wall) I don't suppose she went this way.... UGU Through the wall? FARAMANT This is Oz, it's not unheard of.

Indeed, I think you will find this story quite different from the other histories of Oz, but I hope you will not like it the less on that account. If I am permitted to write another Oz book it will tell of some thrilling adventures encountered by Dorothy, Betsy Bobbin, Trot and the Patchwork Girl right in the Land of Oz, and how they discovered some amazing creatures that never could have existed outside a fairy-land.
