Who’s Who, here and in Oz People ● Dorothy Gaylord: librarian and narrator. She has a small birthmark (the kiss of good from Glinda) on her forehead. OZ NAME: Dorothy Gale. ● Glynnis Wickman Samuel: Mina’s mother and ex-wife to Mina’s father. Remarried Billy Samuel after divorce. OZ NAME: Good Witch of the South (Glinda). ● Wanda Wilhelmina Wickman (“Mina”): Glynnis’ daughter and stepsister to Wade. OZ NAME: Wicked Witch of the West. Winky, her dog. OZ CONNECTION: The WWW enslaved the Winkies. ● William Wickman: Mina’s father. He kept a journal about people in town (his “Book of Records”) which Glynnis inherited. OZ CONNECTION: Glinda has a Great Book of Records, detailing all that happens in Oz. ● Wade Watson Esterson: Mina’s stepbrother. His mother and Mina’s father had an affair and later married. OZ NAME: Wicked Witch of the East. ● Jack Tinsley: FBI agent who comes to town investigating the Wickeds (motorcycle gang). Jack has a heart condition that he’s kept a secret from his superiors. OZ NAME: Tin Man (played by Jack Haley in the movie). ● Drew Strawn: Chief of Police in Broomfield and ex-lover of Dorothy (in high school). Drew acts a bit slow-witted but he’s really very sharp. OZ NAME: Scarecrow (Hunk Andrews, the hired man). ● Leo Burt: Dorothy’s neighbor and close friend. He runs the beauty shop (the Salon of Oohs and Ahs) in the Emerald Hills Mall. OZ NAME: Cowardly Lion (played by Bert Lahr). ● Professor Morgan Franke: “The Professor”. Retired across-the-street neighbor. OZ NAME: The Wizard of Oz; Professor Marvel (played by Frank Morgan). ● Melissa Claire (Auntie M): runs an animal sanctuary. Her brother-in-law & his wife were killed, leaving their daughter an orphan. Mel & her husband took in the child (see Baby Dot). OZ NAME: Emily Gale (“Auntie Em,” played by Clara Blandick in the movie). Note that Auntie M is color blind (just as the scenes with Clara Blandick were shot in black & white). ● Hank Claire: Mel’s husband and owner of the hardware store. OZ NAME: Uncle Henry, Dorothy’s uncle in the movie. ● “Baby Dot” Claire: Hank’s niece whom Mel and Hank are raising. (NO OZ COUNTERPART) ● Judge O. MacKendrick: Judge Mac, the judge in town who is now legal guardian for John Plimpkin. OZ NAME: Ozma (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Honoria Tyson: owner of the Benevolent Co-op and a gossip buddy with Leo. OZ NAME: Hungry Tiger (The Wizard of Oz – truly. Check the original and you’ll see. The Lion answered a tiger’s pleas for help). ● Tom Thompson: owner of the Tick Tock, a jewelry store in town. OZ NAME: Tik Tok (Ozma of Oz). ● Sawyer Hornsby: semi-retired lawyer in town, secretly in love with Judge MacKendrick. OZ NAME: Saw Horse (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Ginger Majors: police deputy, running for mayor. OZ NAME: Jinjur (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Ben Brightman: Kim Gilley’s boyfriend. OZ NAME: Button Bright (The Road to Oz). ● Sean Mansfield: handyman and ex-hippy. OZ NAME: Shaggy Man (The Road to Oz) ● John Plimpkin: rescued by Drew in a fire that killed John’s family. John is now a ward of the court. OZ NAME: Jack Pumpkinhead (The Marvelous Land of Oz). ● Charlie Becker: Mayor of Broomfield and insurance agent who comes out to inspect the damage at Leo’s house. OZ CHARACTER: Munchkin mayor, played by Charley Becker in the movie. ● Amy Nimmer: Jack Tinsley’s ex-girlfriend in Baltimore. OZ NAME: Nimmie Aimee (The Tin Woodman of Oz). ● Miranda Tolliver: part-time officer on the police force and also cook at the Wizard Wand café. OZ NAME: Tollydiggle (The Patchwork Girl of Oz). ● John Connor: newsman/ contest spokesman who gave Dorothy the keys to her new car. ● OZ NAME: Conjo (The Shaggy Man of Oz). ● Patti “Patches” Gillfoyle: bank clerk and volunteer treasurer for the dog show OZ NAME: Patchwork Girl (The Patchwork Girl of Oz) ● Sanders Burke: Glynnis’ father, who left her the farm (later sold to Mel) OZ NAME: Billie Burke was the GWS in the movie ● Mandy Williams: clerk at the police station OZ NAME: Handy Mandy (Handy Mandy in Oz) ● Polly Kroger: high school intern at the library OZ NAME: Polychrome (The Road to Oz) ● Betsy Robins: clerk at the library OZ NAME: Betsy Bobbin (Tik-Tok of Oz) ● Paul Filene: clerk at the library, retired cop OZ NAME: Private Files (Tik-Tok of Oz) ● K. Arund: Baby Dot’s boyfriend OZ NAME: Kiki Aru (The Magic of Oz) Locations: ● Hamilton Hills subdivision: named for Margaret Hamilton who played the Wicked Witch of the West in the film ● Garland Lane: named for Judy Garland ● Emerald Hills mall: the Emerald City ● Dorothy’s house: 1899 Garland Land (1899 was the first publication date for The Wizard of Oz) ● Lyman Lane: location of Mel and Hank’s house. Lyman Frank Baum was the original author of The Wizard of Oz. ● The Fleming Farm: where Wade was tortured. Victor Fleming was the director of The Wizard of Oz movie. Animals ● SoSo the cat: Toto the dog ● Jim: rescued horse (Jim the horse, from Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz) ● King and his compatriots: rescued research monkeys (the flying monkeys). King was the leader of the flying monkeys who were imprisoned by the Wicked Witch of the West. ● Eurkea and Felina: cats (from Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz and The Magical Mimics in Oz) ● Nine pot-bellied pigs: the 9 pigs from Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz ● Lina: the Aracuna hen (Billina from Ozma of Oz) ● Liza: retired guide-pony and now therapy horse. The Horse of a Different Color (named for Liza Minnelli) .
