Acid Mine Drainage in Abandoned Mine
National Conference for Postgraduate Research (NCON -PGR) Acid Mine Drainage in Abandoned Mine Nur Athirah Mohamad Basir Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia Abd Aziz Mohd Azoddein Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Malaysia Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia Nur Anati Azmi Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia Abstract-Acid mine drainage (AMD) in abandoned mining operations related oxidation of sulfide mineral affording an acidic solution that contains toxic metal ions. Hence acidic water that flow into the stream had potential health risks to both aquatic life and residents in the vicinity of the mine. Study will be conduct to investigate water quality and AMD characteristics which are pH value of the stream or discharge area, mineral composition in the rock and neutralization value of the rock in AMD mining area. Result shows that pH value of water in Kg. Aur, Chini and Sg. Lembing are acidic with value of 2.81, 4.16 and 3.60 respectively. Maximum concentrations of heavy metals in the study area are: Pb (0.2 mg/L), Cd (0.05 mg/L), Zn (5.1 mg/L), Cu (5.2 mg/L), Mn (10.9 mg/L), Cr (0.2 mg/L), Ni (0.2 mg/L), As (0.005 mg/L) and Fe (202.69 mg/L). Prediction of acid formation using acid-base calculations from all samples shows high potential acid production between 22.84-2500.16 kg CaCO₃/tonne. The ratio of neutralization (NP) with acid potential (APP) shows a very low value (ratio < 1) Sg. -

A Review of Psychosocial and Psychological and Its Related Issues in the Occupational Settings
National Conference for Postgraduate Research (NCON -PGR) A Review of Psychosocial and Psychological and its Related Issues in the Occupational Settings Nuruzzakiyah Bt Mohd Ishanuddin Occupational Safety and Health Program Faculty of Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang 26300, Gambang, Pahang, Malaysia [email protected] Ezrin Hani Bt Sukadarin Occupational Safety and Health Program Faculty of Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang 26300, Gambang Pahang, Malaysia [email protected] Hanida Bt Abdul Aziz Occupational Safety and Health Program Faculty of Engineering Technology, Universiti Malaysia Pahang 26300, Gambang Pahang, Malaysia [email protected] Abstract—Psychosocial risk and psychological risk were different from each other although they were associated to the term of mental health. Both are related to a condition of a person mental health that they are not physically visible specifically in the workplace. The study regarding mental health at the workplace has been conducted long time ago by many researchers, thus psychosocial and psychological issues in the workplace were quite familiar due to the emergence of new types of hazards and associated risks in the workplace settings. In respect to that, no one should be harm by their work nature had driven more studies on these invisible aspects. To avoid more confusion between these terms, proper understanding must be developed in order to use any of these terms in research. This paper draws a clear distinction between these two terms (psychosocial risk and psychological health) and the related issues in the workplace settings. Keywords—Psychosocial risk; psychological health; mental health 1. INTRODUCTION The study on mental health at the workplace was not very prominent among safety and health researchers, this might be due to their nature as the unseen hazards compared to other types of occupational hazards. -
A Case Study in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
Geographical Review of Japan Vol. 61 (Ser. B), No. 2, 191-211, 1988 The Agricultural Development of Hill Stations in Tropical Asia -A Case Study in the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia- Shigeru SHIRASAKA* There are many highland settlements known as "hill stations" or "summer resorts" in Southeast Asian countries under the tropical and subtropical climate. The hill station is not a native institution, but one developed during the nineteenth century by the British and Dutch colonial masters in order to make sojourns in a foreign land more comfortable. In southern Japan, the worst period is from June through August, though its intensity does not compare with that farther south. In Malaysia and Indonesia, the period extends throughout the year. The Cameron Highlands is the most famous hill station in Peninsular Malaysia being one of colonial origin. The Cameron Highlands is located between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level on the main range of central Malaysia. Today, the Cameron Highlands is mainly a summer resort, but it is also a very important mid-latitude vegetable growing area. The development of the Cameron Highlands began only after 1926, though it was discovered by, and named after, William CAMERONin 1885. Almost simultaneous with the opening of the Came ron Highlands as a hill resort was the growth and development of vegetable farming by farmers of Chinese origin. There are also three new vegetable farming settlements developed after World War II. Some 47 per cent of the inhabitants of the Cameron Highlands are Chinese Malaysian, and they shoulder the vegetable growing business. -

Satellite Rainfall (TRMM 3B42-V7) Performance Assessment and Adjustment Over Pahang River Basin, Malaysia
remote sensing Article Satellite Rainfall (TRMM 3B42-V7) Performance Assessment and Adjustment over Pahang River Basin, Malaysia Siti Najja Mohd Zad 1, Zed Zulkafli 1,* ID and Farrah Melissa Muharram 2 ID 1 Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 Serdang, Malaysia; [email protected] 2 Department of Agriculture Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, 43400 Serdang, Malaysia; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 26 December 2017; Accepted: 23 February 2018; Published: 2 March 2018 Abstract: The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) was the first Earth Science mission dedicated to studying tropical and subtropical rainfall. Up until now, there is still limited knowledge on the accuracy of the version 7 research product TRMM 3B42-V7 despite having the advantage of a high temporal resolution and large spatial coverage over oceans and land. This is particularly the case in tropical regions in Asia. The objective of this study is therefore to analyze the performance of rainfall estimation from TRMM 3B42-V7 (henceforth TRMM) using rain gauge data in Malaysia, specifically from the Pahang river basin as a case study, and using a set of performance indicators/scores. The results suggest that the altitude of the region affects the performances of the scores. Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) is lower mostly at a higher altitude and mid-altitude. The correlation coefficient (CC) generally shows a positive but weak relationship between the rain gauge measurements and TRMM (0 < CC < 0.4), while the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) scores are low (NSE < 0.1). -

Email: [email protected] ROSLAN ZAINAL ABIDIN, Vice President, Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College, Unipark Suria, 43000 Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia. Email: [email protected] Abstract This article describes the development of a rainfall erosivity map for Peninsular Malaysia. Prior to the release of a national level isohyets map for rainfall erosivity (R) factor, soil loss estimation using Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or its revised version (RUSLE) requires manual computation of R factor from the users. This practice induces uncertainties and discrepancies in soil loss estimations due to the use of different computation procedures and spatial approximation methods. This manuscript documents a standardized computation of R values using 10-year rainfall records from 241 rain gauges in the peninsula. The processes of data preparation, analysis and mapping are described herein. The developed isohyets map provides valuable R factor data for easy application of USLE-based soil loss models in Malaysia. Key words: Rainfall erosivity; universal soil loss equation; spatial approximation; isohyets map; GIS. 1. Introduction K - Soil erodibility factor, the erosion rate for a specific soil in continuous fallow The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or its revised condition on a 9% slope of 22.1m version, RUSLE, is the single most commonly used length. -
