  • Theophilus C. Prousis
THEOPHILUS C. PROUSIS THE GREEKS OF RUSSIA AND THE GREEK AWAKENING, 1774-1821 The Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire became a cause célèbre in European public opinion and was the most significant diplomatic issue confronting the Great Powers in the Near East during the 1820s. The emergence of an independent Greek state in 1830 represented the first change in the map of Europe after the Congress of Vienna (1815). As such, the Greek Revolution constituted the first major breach in the Met- ternichean system, which had been established to preserve the political status quo and to protect legitimate rulers from liberal and nationalistic unrest. Although the Greek War of Independence came as an unwelcome sur prise to Metternich and to other heads of state in Europe, it did not occur in a vacuum or without preparation. Indeed, the Greek Revolution represen ted the culmination of a Greek national movement which had developed in the 18th century. Like subsequent Balkan national revivals, the modern Greek awakening was generated by internal and external forces. While opposition to Ottoman rule provided the main internal impetus, the Greeks required assistance and support from outside sources. The most important external impetus for the Greek awakening came from tsarist Russia. As Dimitri Obolensky has clearly shown in his work The Byzantine Commonwealth, the Russians and the Greeks, along with the other Balkan peoples, formed a cultural unity, an association of Christian peoples linked by the bonds of Orthodoxy and Byzantine civilization. The most essential bond was the Orthodox faith, which became the cement of Byzantium and the Byzantine commonwealth1.

  • Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) by Ioannis Zelepos
Greek War of Independence (1821–1832) by Ioannis Zelepos This article deals with developments leading up to, the unfolding of and the outcome of the Greek War of Independence which began in 1821, while focusing in particular on the international dimension of the conflict. Just as diaspora communities in western and central Europe who had been influenced by the French Revolution of 1789 had played a central role in the emergence of the Greek nationalist movement, the insurrection itself also quickly became an international media event throughout Europe. It was the European great powers who ultimately rescued the rebellion (which was hopelessly divided and which had actually failed militarily) through largescale intervention and who put the seal on Greek sovereignty in 1830/32. The emergence of Greece as a European project between great power politics and philhellenism had a profound effect on the further development of the country. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. SAMBRACOS Associate Professor Dept. of Maritime Studies University of Piraeus, Greece e-mail: [email protected] Abstract The present paper refers to the subject of provisioning the Greek insular market and identifying the problems of the current transport system. This concern stands within the framework of the European Union for the optimization of door to door transport chains in Europe. In discovering and identifying the weaknesses of the current system, first there is a reference to the special character of the Greek market consisting of numerous islands. Data is included regarding the current transportation system, the fleets and the goods transferred and also the weaknesses and drawbacks observed in the current transport chain. Taking the above observations and the gathered data into consideration, the paper ends with some conclusions and brainstorming with regard to the redesign and reengineering of the system that will allow for a door to door supply chain in this sensitive region for the Greek economy. 1. Introduction A critical factor for the Greek economic and social development could be considered the provisioning of the Greek insular market. Greece due to its geographic location and the high coastal formulation, shows a significant cluster of islands in the Aegean and Ionian sea.

Maria Areti Errietta Bissa 2 Abstract The thesis discusses the role of the state in archaic and classical Greek trade through the study of four commodities, gold, silver, timber and grain, where the state had reason to intervene. Gold and silver were not only a major source of wealth for the producing states but also their import was a concern for many states, since they were the main coinage metals. In the thesis, both the role of the state in production and export and the situation for coin-minting importers using statistical data for silver and case studies for gold are discussed.

Assuming no prior knowledge, authors describe the development of a country through its emergence as a mod- ern state up to the present day. They also introduce readers to the latest historical scholarship, encouraging critical engagement with compara- tive questions about the nature of nationhood in the modern era. Looking beyond the immediate political boundaries of a given country, authors examine the interplay between the local, national, and international, set- ting the story of each nation within the context of the wider world.
