CHASSIS AND IMPACT ATTENUATOR DESIGN FOR FORMULA STUDENT RACE CAR MECH 5825M Professional Project Chassis and Impact Attenuator design for Formula student Race car Ahmed Oshinibosi Project Supervisor: Prof. D.C Barton 30th August 2012 AKNOWLEGDEMENT Firstly, I would like to appreciate the effort of my supervisor, Professor David Barton who is the head of school of mechanical engineering for his invaluable contribution towards the successful completion of this project. Secondly, I am indebted to my employer, Tallent Automotive Limited who did not only provide financial assistance to me in order to pursue this postgraduate Master’s degree, but also gave me the permission to utilise the company’s software packages to carry out this project. I also want to use this opportunity to thank the faculty of engineering for awarding me the International Excellence scholarship which also contributed towards my tuition fees. ABSTRACT Generally, in the automotive industry, weight reduction, cost of engineering design and reduction in vehicle development cycle time are becoming increasingly focused on. In order to tackle this, Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) is popularly being used to lead design process. This is more efficient than just using CAE as a verification tool. In the design of the F15 chassis, suitable Finite Element Analysis (FEA) optimisation techniques have been adopted from the early design stage. The design problem in view of weight reduction and increasing torsional stiffness has been solved by means of topology optimisation and also by applying gauge optimisation at the later stage of the design phase to optimise the size of structural members of the chassis.

Nov - Dec 2016 (Click on photos to enlarge, or click on images below to go to website) HOOSIER MGs WEB FROM THE EDITOR It’s that time. The leaves are changing and you can feel the chill on the air. The Covered Bridge cars have been streaming down West Highway 36 for more than a week and I’m sure they are coming from all directions of the compass. Chris and I decided it was time to get EVENT CALENDAR rid of some of those treasured items we had at the house. You know the ones, that haven’t moved in the past 20 years. We were going to have a “Garage Sale.” I cleaned out the garage and parked the MGBGT in the driveway so I could fill the garage with those treasures and waited for the crowds of people. My neighbor was having a sale as well so I was secure in the fact that I was soon to be swimming in extra money. You know, like Uncle Scrooge in his money bin. As people came up my driveway HOOSIER MGS to the garage they either stopped or slowed to admire the GT. Next came the litany of questions about the car and if it was for OOOI Chairman: sale. At first I was delighted to hear the stories they told of their Greg Peterson [email protected] experiences with MG’s or the OOOI Treasurer: questions they asked. Almost Kathy Kubick always I was asked “Are you [email protected] selling the car,” and “How much Hoosier A’s President: are you asking for it?” What was Steve Hully a person to do? I was here to sell [email protected] my wares and not discuss my MGB.

By Chris Adamson. (Photos by Chris and the MG Car Club). A new MG3 race car created by interns at the SAIC Motor UK Technical Centre at Longbridge (SAIC is the Chinese owners of the MG brand) has been unveiled for the 2019 competition season. The race-ready five-door hatchback has been developed in conjunction with the MG Car Club to offer a low-cost entry into saloon car racing so that almost anyone can get into motorsport for a very small budget. www.wheels-alive.co.uk It will be eligible for class A of the MG Car Club run MG Cup series during 2019, where it will go up against the likes of the MG ZR, with the aim of having its own one-model championship class in 2020. Potential competitors can use either the current facelifted MG3, launched in the second half of last year, or the first generation MG3 as the starting point for the racer. To meet competition regulations the interns stripped out the interior (including the removal of noise insulation and unnecessary brackets) – this took 118 kg off the weight of the car. They then fitted a Scorpion exhaust, K & N air filters, EBC brake pads, Aeroquip steel braided brake lines, installed a full bolt-in roll cage, adjustable race seat, four point harness, www.wheels-alive.co.uk four litre plumbed extinguisher system and electronic cut-off switch.
