Coming Down From the Mountain: Dialect Contact and Convergence in Contemporary Hutsulshchyna By Erin Victoria Coyne A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Johanna Nichols, Chair Professor Alan Timberlake Professor Lev Michael Spring 2014 Abstract Coming Down From the Mountain: Dialect Contact and Convergence in Contemporary Hutsulshchyna by Erin Victoria Coyne Doctor of Philosophy in Slavic Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor Johanna Nichols, Chair Despite the recent increased interest in Hutsul life and culture, little attention has been paid to the role of dialect in Hutsul identity and cultural revival. The primary focus of the present dissertation is the current state of the Hutsul dialect, both in terms of social perception and the structural changes resulting from the dominance of the standard language in media and education. Currently very little is known about the contemporary grammatical structure of Hutsul. The present dissertation is the first long-term research project designed to define both key elements of synchronic Hutsul grammar, as well as diachronic change, with focus on variation and convergence in an environment of increasing close sustained contact with standard Ukrainian resulting from both a historically-based sense of ethnic identification, as well as modern economic realities facing the once isolated and self-sufficient Hutsuls. In addition, I will examine the sociolinguistic network lines which allow and impede linguistic assimilation, specifically in the situation of a minority population of high cultural valuation facing external linguistic assimilation pressures stemming from socio-political expediency.

  • Literary Combination: Memory and Space in Contemporary Ukrainian Anthologies
Copyright @2013 Australian and New Zealand Journal of European Studies http://www.eusanz.org/ANZJES/index.html Vol. 2013 5(2) ISSN 1837-2147 (Print) ISSN 1836-1803 (On-line) Literary CombiNation: Memory and Space in Contemporary Ukrainian Anthologies OLENA HALETA Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Ukraine [email protected] Abstract Finding itself at the end of the twentieth century in a situation of post-totalitarianism, post-colonialism and postmodernism, Ukrainian literature faced the problem of finding its own identity. Genres dedicated to the representation of literature, including the increasingly popular genre of anthology, were among the foremost means of creating an image of the literature in its totality. From the end of the 1990s onward, the search for a usable tradition was accompanied by a sense of obligation to highlight one’s own modernity, delimit its periods and define its constitutive properties. The national literature has faced the problem taking into account the heritage of totalitarianism and colonialism, which involves coming to terms with its internal space as a multilingual one. On the other hand, the space of literature has extended over the state border, promising to create a new homogeneity of literature and overcoming the differences between domestic and diaspora literature. Key words: anthology, memory, post-colonialism, post-totalitarianism, space, Ukrainian literature. Three Histories and One Theory In the course of the last 20 years Ukrainian literature has been the central character in at least three narratives which have yet to be thoroughly comprehended or described by literary history. During this period Ukrainian literature faced the problem of self-determination in a post-totalitarian, post- colonial, and postmodern situation.

The most common algorithms for proving the nobility are considered among the Cossack foremen of Sloboda Ukraine. The authors determined the specific features of the nobilization process on the territory of the former Ukrainian Cossack regiments, which distinguished it from similar processes on the lands of the former Hetmanate. The work is based on handwritten sources that are stored in the funds of the Central State Historical Archive in Kyiv, the State Archives of the Kharkiv Region and the Central Scientific Library of Kharkiv National University named after V.N.

It is concluded that the status of a nobleman depended on a number of factors: origin and kinship; belonging to a personal or hereditary nobility; parts of the genealogy of a noble book into which the genus is entered; the performance of positions in the noble elections; rank; property status. At the same time, as the most important components of the status of a nobleman, the authors distinguish the rank and possession of serfs. On the example of the «eight-class» nobility of Kharkiv governorship, it was shown that the property status of the nobleman was not directly dependent on his rank.

SCENES OF BELONGING: CINEMA AND THE NATIONALITY QUESTION IN SOVIET UKRAINE DURING THE LONG 1960S by Joshua J. First A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (History) in The University of Michigan 2008 Doctoral Committee: Professor William G. Rosenberg, Chair Professor Ronald G. Suny Associate Professor Scott Spector Associate Professor Johannes von Moltke © Joshua J. First 2008 Preface While conducting research for this dissertation, I ran across an odd article from 1996 in a short-lived Ukrainian newspaper called Film Currier (Kinokur”er), which excitedly reported on the front page that Planet 3963, discovered by astronomer Liudmila Chernykh from the Crimean Astrophysics Observatory in 1969, had been renamed in honor of the recently deceased Soviet filmmaker Sergei Paradzhanov. The editors thanked Tat’iana Derevianko at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko Museum for her efforts at achieving recognition for the change with international organizations, writing that it was important that the “universe have as many of ‘our’ planets as possible.” While affirming the national significance of the re-naming, which fit with the larger project of re-imagining Ukrainian history and its canon of heroes and villains – Turgenev Street in L’viv, for example, became Heroes of the UPA Street – the editors nonetheless kept “our” in quotes, suggesting either an ironic detachment from the possessive pronoun, or an inability to commit to such stellar possessions when the newly independent republic did not even have firm possession over its own coastline. Perhaps they felt the Museum was overstating Paradzhanov’s importance, but just as likely the editors were ambivalent about associating the filmmaker’s name with Ukraine in particular.

Barkaszi. — The paper is devoted to the analysis of historical changes in the rodent fauna (superorder Glires) of the region of the Ukrainian Carpathians. The period from the 19th to the early 21st century is considered. Data on natural and artificial species dynamics due to extinction, intro duction, reintroduction, invasion, and expansion are generalized. Brief characteristics of species involved into these events are given. It was clarified that new species appeared in the region in the result of expansion (Castor fiber, Mus spicilecus) and introduction (Ondatra zibethicus), while reintroduction of glacial relicts (Lepus timidus, Marmota marmota), which disappeared during the 19th century, as well as introduction of Oryctolagus cuniculus and Myocastor coypus were unsuccessful. In addition, two species vanished from the composition of the local fauna: the rare Eliomys quercinus and the ancient commensal Rattus rattus. A recon structed checklist of the rodent fauna as of the early 20th century is presented and used in calcu lations of indices of fauna changes, checklists’ ambiguousness, and of fauna rotation for a century. It was shown that quantitative changes of the local fauna for the last century are nonessential (the index of fauna rotation is 10.9 %) because the number of lost species was compensated by expansion and introduction.

JOURNAL 89 O F E U R O P E A N E C O N O M Y Vol. 15 (№ 1). March 2016 Publication of Ternopil National Economic Universit y Regionalization in European Economic Area Yevhen SAVELYEV, Maksym KURYLYAK THE CONCEPT OF REGIONAL REFORMS IN UKRAINE UNDER THE NUTS Abstract The article elaborates on the concepts of region and regionalization. The authors show ways for adopting the European system for unification of regional units (NUTS) in Ukraine. The authors systemize and classification European countries into unitary, regional and federal states; highlight the conditions for re- gionalization; and study the aspects of subsidiarity in the context of the on-going decentralization. The authors provide substantiation for approaches to reforma- tion of the administrative and territorial structure of Ukraine and develop the his- torical-economic approach to its regionalization, according to which Ukraine is viewed as a unitary state comprising 19 krays: Donbass, Galicia-Bukovina, Slo- boda Ukraine, Land of Kyiv, Central Ukraine, Black Sea Region, Pontic Steppe, Left-Bank Ukraine, Podolia, Right-Bank Ukraine, Carpathians and Zakarpattia, Pryazovia, Eastern Volhynia, Western Volhynia, Western Polissia, Budjak, East- ern Polissia, Land of Severia, Taurica. © Yevhen Savelyev, Maksym Kurylyak, 2016.
