2 Chairman’s Introduction

Dear Athletes, Team Managers and Support Personnel,

Welcome to the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2017

The world’s best athletes are heading to New Zealand once again for the 5th edition of the Winter Games NZ. The 2017 competition schedule has been extended to 2 weeks and moved a week later than previous years. We have the addition of a FWQ Freeride series for the first time at The Remarkables, as well as the return of para- with a Para World Cup Banked Slalom at Treble Cone. The Merino Muster is also joining the Games for the first time as an associate Cross Country race.

Since the inaugural Games of 2009, our vision of delivering one of the world’s best winter sports events has truly become a reality. I’m very proud to say that Winter Games NZ is now ranked amongst the top five events on the international winter sports circuit, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere.

We continue to work closely with Snow Sports New Zealand to provide a platform for homegrown talent to compete at the highest level and showcase their ability to the world. It was with great pride that I watched the largest Winter Olympic team New Zealand has ever produced chasing medals in Sochi.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and especially our army of fantastic volunteers without whom the Games simply could not happen.

DJ’s and bands will play throughout the showcase with the Jucy Meltdown on Friday September 9th rounding out what promises to be the best snow sports party this year.

Advice for Visitors to New Zealand

New Zealand has a population of around 4.5 million people, and around 40 million sheep. The population is predominantly white European (pakeha) and approx 12% Maori and Polynesian. The principal languages are English and Maori, with English being the most predominant. New Zealand is an independent member of the British Commonwealth.

Visas New Zealand has a special policy for athletes, coaches, administrators, o cials and support sta visiting the country to participate in sporting events. Please check with NZ Immigration to nd out if visitors from your country require a visitor visa to enter New Zealand. Information and application forms for visitor visas are available on www.immigration.govt.nz or from New Zealand and Australian Consulates, Embassies or High commissions. 19 Liability & Insurance All athletes, officials and members of the National Associations who attend and participate in the event shall do so at their own risk. Winter Games NZ, sponsors and suppliers, their agents, employees and volunteers shall not be responsible for any losses or injuries incurred or suffered by the athletes, officials or other person in conjunction with the organising or staging of the event. Public Liability Insurance (CHF) 3 million, for the period of the event, is in place.

If you are injured in New Zealand (including whilst competing in a competition), you may need the assistance of the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme. ACC helps pay for your care – and that means paying towards the cost of your treatment and helping your recovery while you remain in New Zealand. ACC will not cover any medical or related costs arising from the accident a er you leave New Zealand. You will accordingly still need to arrange your own travel and medical insurance. New Zealand’s medical facilities are not free to visitors except as a result of an accident but even in the case of an accident, surcharges in private facilities will apply.

Currency New Zealand uses the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$). All major credit cards can be used in most outlets, and there are several banks in both Wanaka and Queenstown, which provide ATM and travellers cheque facilities.

Time New Zealand is on NZST (NZ Standard Time), which is 13 hrs ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). Power New Zealand uses a 3 flat pin power plug; adaptors can be bought at most airports and in local electrical shops and some major supermarkets. Electricity is provided at 230/240 volts (50 hertz).

Water It is generally safe to drink the tap water in New Zealand. The water here is said to be some of the purest and cleanest in the world. There is a fresh water spring in central Wanaka (just along from the Dinosaur Park) offering free, clean spring water...all you need is a bottle.

Driving You must drive on the left hand side of the road in New Zealand, and all hire vehicles will be right hand drive. It is recommended that you hire snow chains if you are driving in New Zealand, particularly if you are driving to any of the ski fields. It is common for the access roads to the ski fields to be accessible only to vehicles carrying chains, and occasionally only to 4WD vehicles with chains.

20 Emergency Services Please dial 111 for emergency services (Police, Fire, Ambulance).
