The Winter Games NZ are a great opportunity to showcase what New Zealand can offer international competitors in our snow and ice sports. Of course Naseby and the International Curling Rink offer year round access to fantastic curling opportunities. It is especially exciting to host this competition as part of the wider Winter Games NZ festival. Hopefully all of you will get the opportunity to take in some of the other winter games activities and that you get the chance to mix with the other athletes and officials from around the world. I hope you have an enjoyable week of competition and that all of you achieve the goals that you have set for yourselves. Curling plays a very important part in the culture of those of us who live in Central Otago and we look forward to you continuing the traditions that are associated with your sport. With a World Class field and the great facilities in Naseby, it should be outstanding tournament. I hope you all enjoy the competition and your stay in Naseby and surrounds and perhaps find time to enjoy our unique history associated with gold mining, forestry, farming and of course curling. The Maniototo Curling International Rink you are playing in which is the only truly dedicated indoor rink in the southern hemisphere is now ten years old and has hosted many international competitions in that time. Naseby is the historic centre of curling in New Zealand with the early gold miners playing when conditions were too cold and frosty for gold miners to work with water sluicing, panning etc. Only a few weeks ago our outdoor Grand Match was played just across the road from our indoor rink with 36 clubs from throughout NZ fielding two rinks each to contest our outdoor natural ice Bonspiel. I am sure you will find our local people friendly and local businesses accommodating so please explore our district and surrounds while you are here. Good luck and good curling. You are now fortunate enough to be competing in the first international Mixed Doubles competition since its inclusion in the Olympics. How great is that? Five cities (“Applicant Cities”) applied to become Candidate Cities to host these Games and submitted their Application Files to the IOC by the deadline of 14 March 2014. In the order of drawing of lots carried out by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board on 10 December 2013, these cities were: Krakow (POL) Oslo (NOR) Almaty (KAZ) Lviv (UKR) Beijing (CHN) At the time of presenting this Report to the IOC Executive Board, three Applicant Cities remain in contention to host the 2022 Olympic Winter Games: Oslo, Almaty and Beijing. This report is the analysis of their Olympic projects. Krakow and Lviv took the decision not to continue their applications. Acceptance of Candidate Cities In accordance with Rule 33 of the Olympic Charter and its Bye-law: “All Applicant Cities shall comply with a Candidature Acceptance Procedure, conducted under the authority of the IOC Executive Board, which shall determine the contents of such procedure.

    Olympic c ouncil of Asia Report of the Olympic Council of Asia to the ANOC EB & General Assembly Doha, Qatar 15th and 16th November 2016 By Mr. Yu Zaiqing, Vice President OCA - ANOC It is indeed a great pleasure to be presenting the report of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) for the year 2016. Apart from the various activities carried out by OCA in 2016, one of the most important one was the Da Nanag, Asian Beach Games. 5th Asian Beach Games, Da Nang, Vietnam, The 5th Asian Beach Games were held from September 24 to October 3 2016 in the4 coastal city of Da Nang, Vietnam. Over 2,200 athletes from 41 countries of OCA participated in 172 events in 22 disciplines of 14 sports. Over 400 media attended, with Vietnam TV serving as the Host Broadcaster. Vietnam topped the medals tally with 52 Gold, 44 Silver and 43 Bronze, followed on the second sport by Thailand with 36 Gold, 24 Silver and 30 Bronze. The third position was taken by China with 12 Gold, 18 Silver and 19 Bronze. OCA GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETINGS The most recent OCA General Assembly, the 35th in history, took place at the Royal Lotus Hotel and Convention Centre in Da Nang, Vietnam, on Sunday, September 25, 2016. A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US Navy would expand its presence in the Mediterranean to four destroyers from three. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, en route to Asia, said Obama had asked the Pentagon for options on Syria, where an apparent chemical weapons attack that killed as many as 1,000 civilians has upped pressure on Washington to respond. “The Defense Department has responsibility to provide the president with options for all contingencies,” Hagel said. “And that requires posi- tioning our forces, positioning our assets, to be able to carry out different options - whatever options the presi- dent might choose.” He did not elaborate. The defense official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said the USS Mahan, a destroyer armed with cruise missiles, had finished its deployment and was due to head back to its home base in Norfolk, Virginia.

    World Curling Championships Firsts Victorian Curling Association – Saturday, 01 MAY 2010 IN an exciting match that required an extra end, Australia defeated Switzerland to claim the bronze medal in the senior men’s world curling championship last week in Chelyabinsk, Russia. This is Australia’s first ever medal in the World Curling Championships, in an event that was full of firsts. In the mixed doubles competition New Zealand faced the host nation in the gold medal game. In front of a crowd of over 1500, the Russians took the gold; the first World Curling Championship for Russia and the first world curling medal for New Zealand. The bronze medal game was also quite exciting, requiring an extra end for China to defeat Spain. Playing in both the senior men’s and the mixed doubles competitions, Australian skip Hugh Millikin said the tournament was tiring. “I played 15 games over 7 days, and mixed doubles is very physical as you sweep just about every rock.” Playing in both competitions, Millikin faced a couple of scheduling conflicts where he had to leave the senior’s competition to join his mixed doubles partner. Kim Forge was attending her first World Curling Championships, “after some initial nerves, she played extremely well. If we didn’t run into a very hot Russian team, a medal was a possibility.” Speaking about the senior men’s competition, Millikin said, “A great performance with team Canada was pleasure to be a part of. Then the bronze medal game was close from the first rock to the last.” A last shot draw in the eighth end put Australia in the position of having to steal for the win in the extra end.
