The Winter Games NZ are a great opportunity to showcase what New Zealand can offer international competitors in our snow and ice sports. Of course Naseby and the International Curling Rink offer year round access to fantastic curling opportunities. It is especially exciting to host this competition as part of the wider Winter Games NZ festival. Hopefully all of you will get the opportunity to take in some of the other winter games activities and that you get the chance to mix with the other athletes and officials from around the world. I hope you have an enjoyable week of competition and that all of you achieve the goals that you have set for yourselves. Curling plays a very important part in the culture of those of us who live in Central Otago and we look forward to you continuing the traditions that are associated with your sport. Good luck and good curling. Tony Lepper PAGE / 04 WORLD CURLING FEDERATION VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Winter Games NZ 2015 Naseby, New Zealand The Winter Games NZ 2015 is the first international Mixed Doubles event to be held after the IOC announcement of the inclusion of Mixed Doubles into the 2018 Winter Olympic Program. With a World Class field and the great facilities in Naseby, it should be outstanding tournament. Hugh Millikin Vice President World Curling Federation CHIEF UMPIRE It is a privilege to have been invited to visit this incredible country with all of it wonderful scenery and warm welcoming people and to volunteer along with them. It is a wonderful opportunity for you the athletes to test your skills against the best in the world and help elevate the Mixed Doubles Curling rules for the upcoming Olympics in Korea in 2018. I know you will not take this responsibility lightly and give us great curling and input. But please both volunteers and athletes enjoy yourselves and soak in the wonder of this great country and its people and the guests that have come for your Winter Games NZ. Thank you to all of you and your sponsors for this opportunity, I know we will give our all and go away with fond memories and many new friends. Donna Butler PAGE / 05 NEW ZEALAND CURLING ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As president of New Zealand Curling I am pleased to welcome all the athletes and their support personnel to the 2015 Winter Games NZ Curling Competition at Naseby, Central Otago. I hope you all enjoy the competition and your stay in Naseby and surrounds and perhaps find time to enjoy our unique history associated with gold mining, forestry, farming and of course curling. The Maniototo Curling International Rink you are playing in which is the only truly dedicated indoor rink in the southern hemisphere is now ten years old and has hosted many international competitions in that time. Naseby is the historic centre of curling in New Zealand with the early gold miners playing when conditions were too cold and frosty for gold miners to work with water sluicing, panning etc. Only a few weeks ago our outdoor Grand Match was played just across the road from our indoor rink with 36 clubs from throughout NZ fielding two rinks each to contest our outdoor natural ice Bonspiel. I am sure you will find our local people friendly and local businesses accommodating so please explore our district and surrounds while you are here. Good luck and good curling. David Greer President of NZCA PAGE / 06 CEO WINTER GAMES NZ WELCOME Welcome to all participants and supporters in the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ Curling Mixed Doubles competition. This is an exciting time for us now that Mixed Doubles has been added to the Winter Olympics programme. After the 2013 Winter Games NZ we made the bold decision to focus on the Mixed Doubles and that has proven to be right move. You are now fortunate enough to be competing in the first international Mixed Doubles competition since its inclusion in the Olympics. How great is that? Accordingly, we are webcasting the semis and finals live internationally so the whole world will be watching you. I wish you all well and may the competition do what all sport does best - provide great battles on the ice and even greater friendships off it. I look forward to attending some of the competition. Warm wishes Arthur Klap Chief Executive PAGE / 07 NEW ZEALAND CURLING ASSOCIATION CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Welcome On behalf of the New Zealand Curling Association I extend a very warm welcome to Naseby the 4th Biennial Winter Games NZ Curling Event. To all players, officials, dignitaries and visitors, we look forward to hosting you and trust that you will enjoy your time with us. For those of you who have been to Naseby before, welcome back. For those who are visiting for the first time, a hearty welcome to the “Home of New Zealand Curling”. Naseby was the site of a gold discovery 150 years ago and thousands of miners from all over the world rushed to the valley hoping to make their fortune. Today gold is part of our history and the main industries are farming and forestry. I hope you will take time to explore and enjoy our village and its history. However the purpose of you visit is to compete in the 2015 Audi quattro Winter Games NZ and with the lineup of teams who have entered we can expect to be treated to some great curling.
