Message from the Editor:

Many of our members are newcomers to the world of genealogy. Often, many believe that there is somehow a magic formula for "knowing how to do it." They may delay; waiting to "be taught" to research their families.

Many want classes and believe that classes will teach them to do research. Classes and workshops are wonderful but are mostly motivational. I enjoy them myself. But basically one learns by going to a library and getting started. Knowledge is gained by mastering the use of one resource or tool at a time. This is true of the beginner or professional. Classes and workshops motivate us to try new things and we teach ourselves as we jump into the research.

Start with the present and move backwards. You will learn as you go. Learn what resources are available locall y for you to do research. Start there. Start with your parents' or grandparents' generation. The following li st contains resources that could be examined easily by a beginner. Each item should be viewed as a new resource that can be mastered. The next generation back will have others. 1£ you start here and move back, by the time you get to pre Civil War research, you will have a start on knowing what to do to move backwards to the more diffi cult research.

Idea li st for post-1 900 research: Social Security Death Index- Available on CD commercially, at local LDS Family History Centers, and via the lnternet. Contains birth, death, and residence at death for many who have died since 1964. Birth and Death Indexes- Kentucky and many other states have birth and death indexes available on microfiche and in book form. These will lead to examination of birth and death certificates which contain much valuable information. 1900, 19 10, and 1920 Census-Avail able on microfilm and in book form for some localities. The Kentucky Library has these for every Kentucky County. Ask about the Soundex if you are not sure of the county in which they li ved. Marriage records-Available at the county courthouses or on microfilm at the State Archives or LDS Family History Centers. Transcribed records are available in book form in some li braries and for sale by the authors. Check county historical and genealogical societies for book availability. Obituaries-Many newspapers have been microfilmed. Check your local library for availability.

Get started. The fun is in the hunt.

Kentucky Historical References to Some Stations of Old Kentucky

Submitted by Bud Thomas 61 Badger Road Kite, GA 31049

Many settlements of old Kentucky were labeled as "Stations" by the populace. Actuall y, they served the dual purpose of residence and miniature fort, built to help stave off Indians in case of attack. Many of these Stations were occupied by multiple families and were often named after the leader of the group.

Below is the second of a series oflistings of many of these Stations and, where known, a location and/or brief narrative Taken from many sources, they are thought to represent the largest single li sting of early Kentucky Stations, anywhere.

Atlas of Historical Boundaries, Kentucky: An Important Resource

Submitted by Gene Whicker 1118 Nahm Drive Bowling Green, KY 42104

There are many resources available locally and ill most libraries that are not well known. Mr. Whicker describes important resources that may have been overlooked.

The Newberry Library of Chicago has conducted a project "to provide complete and comprehensive information on all changes in all counties . .. from the colonial era to the present" (i .e. 1990).

The Kentucky volume, one of 40, copyrighted in 1995, was published by Charles Scribner' s Sons, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Macmillan. Volume total is only 40 due to some volume's including more than one state.

Each state is covered "back to the earliest county, at least;" in Kentucky' s case, "Virginia' s creation of counties in Kentucky is shown" The "what, when, and where" of boundary changes composes the basic volume, of course. Historical boundaries in heavy lines are superimposed on present-day maps. Present-day places within the county are kept constant throughout the otherwise cbanging maps. Some examples of the number of maps per county: Floyd, 17 on 12 pages; Greenup, five on six; Warren, seven maps on seven pages. Twenty-six places are shown in Warren County, along with its streams.

A less detailed one-volume work on boundaries, published by Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, in 1987, is William T. Thorndale and William Dollarhide's Map Guide to the U. S. Federal Censuses, 1790-1920. An even less comprehensive [but useful] guide is Wendell H. Rone's An Historic Atlas of Kentucky and Her Counties, 1815-1965.

The Newberry volumes are also available in machine readable form . Local availability of these three titles: Newberry: publi c library and University Libraries reference room. Some 13 other states are also present in the latter place. ThorndalelDollarhide: Kentucky Library. Rone: Kentucky Library.

Book Review

James Welborn ofMuhlenburg County and His Descendants by Gail Jackson Miller, 425 Midcrest Drive, Bowling Green, KY 42101

This comprehensive work by Gail Jackson Miller is a well-crafted family history foll owing the general guidelines of current methodology. This volume uses the Modified Register format for numbering individuals, which allows you to easily trace an individual back through the generations. Interspersed with family photographs, Miller begins the volume with a helpful list of the sources for each photograph. Extensively endnoted, the author demonstrates a thorough knowledge of her subject, supplying a source for each piece of information. Although footnotes would place identifYing source documentation closer to the quote, the practicality of using footnotes in this work would break the text into fragmented units. In addition to the very interesting stories of this family, the author gives the reader a connection to events occurring with the region, and helps paint a picture oflife in Western Kentucky throughout the Welborn generations. The every name index is easy to use and helpful, but an index of place names would also be helpful in tracking these families in local cemeteries or in their migration throughout the Midwest and Southwest. The author does an excellent job of sharing the difficult points in her research. She carries her readers through her thoughts in a step-by-step process, offering propositions and the resulting findings. This text can certainly provide some thoughtful research ideas to any genealogist. The absence of unsupported ideas or family links shows the author's intent toward a scholarly, well-crafted family history. There is some weakness in the use of secondary sources, but the resulting work is based on sound research techniques. This book lacks the tedious lists of genealogies without source or depth found in many self-published books. The author makes a conscious choice to limit the generations supplied in order to provide the quality depth of information on each generation. This hardbound volume will be a welcome addition to the Kentucky Library and will not only be a source of information for Welborn and related families, but should be used as a example of a type of family histories which quality genealogists should prepare. (Hardbound, 414 pages, full name index, Purchase directly from author)

Times have changed since this story was published He had not known her very long, but as she stood in the moonlight a white dress and a blue sash set off her figure so well that he thought he had never seen a prettier picture. And then he did an awful thing- he kissed her. The innocent girl shrank from him in horror, and the young man realized that he had gone too far. Indeed, as the panting girl strove to collect herself sufficiently to express the scorn surging in her bosom the young man thought of the heating he must endure the next day from her father and brothers and of the long accounts of the fight that would appear in the newspapers. Fortunately he had his hat in his hand and turned to go. But the girl struggled to speak. She would express her contempt for his action though it killed her. "When," she said in a low, faltering voice, full of deep seated hatred, "are you coming again?" A lien County Times, February 2, 1912, page 4.
