2 Chairman’s Introduction

Dear Athletes, Team Managers and Support Personnel,

Welcome to the Audi quattro Winter Games NZ 2015

The world’s best athletes are heading to New Zealand once again for the 4th edition of the Winter Games NZ. We look forward to bringing you 10 days of action-packed elite competition, including 4 World Cups, a tournament featuring the new Olympic sport of Mixed Doubles and a head to head Alpine Dual Slalom race under lights at .

Since the inaugural Games of 2009, our vision of delivering one of the world’s best winter sports events has truly become a reality. I’m very proud to say that Winter Games NZ is now ranked amongst the top five events on the international winter sports circuit, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. I would also like to congratulate the 19 incredible 2013 Winter Games NZ competitors who went on to win medals at the Sochi Winter Olympic and in February 2014, especially our own Corey Peters taking silver in the IPCAS Giant Slalom.

We continue to work closely with Snow Sports New Zealand to provide a platform for homegrown talent to compete at the highest level and showcase their ability to the world. It was with great pride that I watched the largest Winter Olympic team New Zealand has ever produced chasing medals in Sochi.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters and especially our army of fantastic volunteers without whom the Games simply could not happen.

The elements of the mihi (speech) include: • Acknowledging the Almighty. • Acknowledging the ancestors, inviting the ancestors of the visitors to join with those belonging locally so that they can be acknowledged and grieved for as one. 22 Advice for Visitors to New Zealand

New Zealand has a population of around 4.3 million people, and around 40 million sheep. The population is predominantly white European (pakeha) and approx 12% Maori and Polynesian. The principal languages are English and Maori, with English being the most predominant. New Zealand is an independent member of the British Commonwealth.

Visas New Zealand has a special policy for athletes, coaches, administrators, officials and support staff visiting the country to participate in sporting events. Please check on: www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/visit/ visitors/quickcheck.htm to find out if visitors from your country require a visitor visa to enter New Zealand. Application forms for visitor visas are available on www.immigration.govt.nz or from New Zealand and Australian Consulates, Embassies or High commissions.

Liability & Insurance All athletes, officials and members of the National Associations who attend and participate in the event shall do so at their own risk. Winter Games NZ, sponsors and suppliers, their agents, employees and volunteers shall not be responsible for any losses or injuries incurred or suffered by the athletes, official or other person in conjunction with the organising or staging of the event. Public Liability Insurance (CHF) 3 million, for the period of the event, is in place.

If you are injured in New Zealand (including whilst competing in a competition), you may need the assistance of the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), New Zealand’s accident compensation scheme. ACC helps pay for your care – and that means paying towards the cost of your treatment and helping your recovery while you remain in New Zealand. ACC will not cover any medical or related costs arising from the accident after you leave New Zealand. You will accordingly still need to arrange your own travel and medical insurance. New Zealand’s medical facilities are not free to visitors except as a result of an accident but even in the case of an accident, surcharges in private facilities will apply.

Currency: New Zealand uses the New Zealand Dollar (NZ$). All major credit cards can be used in most outlets, and there are several banks in both Wanaka and Queenstown, which provide ATM and travellers cheque facilities.

Time: New Zealand is on NZST (NZ Standard Time), which is 12 hrs ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).

23 Power: New Zealand uses a 3 flat pin power plug; adaptors can be bought at most airports and in local electrical shops and some major supermarkets. Electricity is provided at 230/240 volts (50 hertz).

Water: It is generally safe to drink the tap water in New Zealand. The water here is said to be some of the purest and cleanest in the world.

Driving: You must drive on the left hand side of the road in New Zealand, and all hire vehicles will be right hand drive. It is recommended that you hire snow chains if you are driving in New Zealand, particularly if you are driving to any of the ski fields. It is common for the access roads to the ski fields to be accessible only to vehicles carrying chains, and occasionally only to 4WD vehicles with chains.

Emergency Services: Please dial 111 for emergency services (Police, Fire, Ambulance).

For further information about New Zealand please go to www.newzealand.com

We Look forward to seeing you here in August! ____
