REGISTRATION FORM

20-27 FEBRUARY 2010 Welcome to Wanaka with its beautiful lake surrounded by glorious snow-capped mountains has to be one of the most stunning places to visit in the world. It is held that Wanaka was named after a Maori Chief of the name Oanaka. Early European farming settlers came into the district in the 1850s but it wasn’t until Theodore Russell built his Wanaka Hotel in 1867 that the settlement of Pembroke (now present day Wanaka) began.

Right up into the 1870s Albert Town was the centre of the Wanaka district, but in 1873 it reluctantly ceded defeat as the district centre when authorities built a Post Office at Pembroke. It wasn’t until 1st September 1940 that Pembroke officially became Wanaka by the will of the people.

This jewel of the south now welcomes Cavalcaders, most of whom will travel routes the old settlers and miners used nearly 160 years ago. The going will be a lot easier but the grandeur of the country remains much the same. I know you will spare a thought for those tough Old Timers who forged the way for our benefit.

“No town in can boast such beautiful surroundings or a healthier or more salubrious climate.” (From Dunedin newspapers of the 1880s)

Poem the dawn came in splendour the snow peaks were flaming the mist was below like a great rolling sea. till it lifted and showed us the land we were seeking the broad smiling waste where our station would be!

1 WALKING TRAILS Gold Hunters - WALKING TRAIL Timaru Creek-Hunter Valley Station Trail Boss: Peter Dymock Ph: 03 4488092 Email: [email protected] Duration: 4 days Meet: 23rd Feb. Limit: 60

CODE COST WALKER DYW $365 LEADER DYL

This year long serving Trail Boss Peter Dymock is back with a trail into the heart of the Southern Alps with a circumnavigation of the head of Lake Hawea and into the remote Hunter Valley, the source of Lake Hawea. Although passing through spectacular alpine and lake scenery, the trail is on a good track the whole way that never rises more the 200m above the Lake. It essentially follows the most interesting “off road” part of the annual Contact Energy mountain bike challenge - if they can bike it, you can walk it! There will be plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing, so bring your togs and rods... The Trail will be fully catered by the Alexandra Primary school PTA and all your overnight baggage will be transported for you. You only need carry a daypack on the trail. We meet at the Hawea Flat Hall on Tuesday evening of the 23rd February 2010 where we overnight. There will be secure car parking near the hall for the duration of the trail. Wednesday will be a fairly cruisey shakedown day with a short bus trip to Timaru Creek, then a 16km walk into Dingleburn Station where we overnight at the woolshed, courtesy of the Mead family. Thursday is a 25km walk up the east shore of Lake Hawea, then a ford of the Hunter River to overnight in tents at the Boundary Creek Hut complex, a lovely remote setting in the Hunter Valley, sheltered by mature trees. If the Hunter River is too high to cross on foot, we will be boating across it. Friday is the longest day with a 27km walk down the west side of the Lake Hawea to the Hunter Valley Station woolshed right on the shores of the lake, courtesy of the Cochrane family. The trail climbs above the lake with great views. Saturday will be a bit of a sleep in, then a half hour bus trip back to the cars at Hawea Flat, where we will make our way into Wanaka to change into “period” costumes in time for the grand parade at high noon with all the other trails.

Your 4 day trail is a little different this year as we begin and finish in Wanaka. Want a trail with that X factor - read on. This is a one off opportunity to join our very special and exciting trail on the shores of Lake Wanaka. Over the next three days we will make our way over varied terrain heading up the lake to the beautiful Minaret Station which is not accessible by road. We will have breathtaking views, ride on a Barge, we will be walking towards the mountains every day and we have a very special treat. Those of you who know me know I love to spring something special during the trail. This is the very best of them all, but it is a secret so you will have to join us to find out more! Our gathering at Wanaka on Tuesday evening signals the start of the trail. Wednesday, our destination today is West Wanaka Station. Leaving Wanaka we will follow the shoreline to Glendhu Bay where we climb above the bluffs (the views are spectacular) before descending towards West Wanaka Station. On Thursday the terrain is varied as we spend time both near the shore and further inland. We will climb up to 740 metres where the scenery is everything you would expect to see in the travel promotions. Friday morning, on leaving the woolshed, we continue heading towards the mountains and Minaret Station. We will have time for swimming or maybe some will catch a Trout or Salmon along the way. On Saturday morning we will barge across Lake Wanaka. Boarding our waiting bus we will have awesome views of Lake Hawea as we return to Wanaka where we will join the other trails for the grand parade. A high standard of tramping fitness is required as most days involve 6-7 hours tramping over varied terrain. Our backup team will transport your gear, but walkers will need to carry a backpack containing personal effects. Caterers will provide our meals and accommodation will be in a hall and woolsheds. A safe parking area is available for those wishing to leave their vehicle at Wanaka.

This really is a special and fun trail and an experience you will not want to miss. The price does include the cost of the barge, bus and yes that special treat. See you in February! This is a non-smoking trail.

Dinner approx. 7pm Earnscleugh Station is easily found on the Clyde-Alexandra back road. Tuesday morning we ride out through the Fraser Dam area, along ridges and valleys below the Carrick Range to arrive at the historic gold mining area of Bannockburn. Here we will be hosted by Don and Marion Clark at Carrick Station. Some will remember Don as the outstanding Otago and All Black flanker of the early and mid sixties, whose career was cut short by a riding accident. He was a rugby and mustering mate of your Trail Boss and is looking forward to our visit. Wednesday we ride through Bannockburn and on to the shoreline of Lake Dunstan. A brief stop at Old Cromwell Town is planned, then on round the lake edge to Lowburn Valley and lunch. The afternoon we go up Chinaman’s Gully and onto the old stock route on the Lowburn Downs, arriving at the historic Mt Pisa Station, home to Murray and Jackie McMillan. As leaders of many earlier Cavalcade trails, they will be sure to give us a very warm welcome. A winery visit is possible this afternoon. Thursday we ride from Mt Pisa up over Locharburn country and down to Lake McKay Station homestead. We will be climbing quite high on this part of the trail so will be rewarded with outstanding views of the Upper Clutha area. Jock Meehan, manager of Lake McKay and his partner are both horse people who are happy to be our hosts. Friday they will lead us on a loop ride on the station behind the Luggate Creek where we will once again have special views of the Wanaka and Hawea areas. Saturday morning we travel through part of Criffel Station and Mt Barker to the Wanaka Rodeo grounds where we assemble with the other trails for the Grand Parade. Our catering will once again be in the most capable hands of the Strath Taieri School Team led by John Carruthers. Our Wranglers, Gofers and other helpers are all competent and friendly people so with the beautiful Central Otago scenery, some social activities and reasonable length days planned we should all hit Wanaka in good shape.
