REGISTRATION FORM 20-27 FEBRUARY 2010 Welcome to Wanaka Wanaka with its beautiful lake surrounded by glorious snow-capped mountains has to be one of the most stunning places to visit in the world. It is held that Wanaka was named after a Maori Chief of the name Oanaka. Early European farming settlers came into the district in the 1850s but it wasn’t until Theodore Russell built his Wanaka Hotel in 1867 that the settlement of Pembroke (now present day Wanaka) began. Right up into the 1870s Albert Town was the centre of the Wanaka district, but in 1873 it reluctantly ceded defeat as the district centre when authorities built a Post Office at Pembroke. It wasn’t until 1st September 1940 that Pembroke officially became Wanaka by the will of the people. This jewel of the south now welcomes Cavalcaders, most of whom will travel routes the old settlers and miners used nearly 160 years ago. The going will be a lot easier but the grandeur of the country remains much the same. I know you will spare a thought for those tough Old Timers who forged the way for our benefit. “No town in New Zealand can boast such beautiful surroundings or a healthier or more salubrious climate.” (From Dunedin newspapers of the 1880s) Poem the dawn came in splendour the snow peaks were flaming the mist was below like a great rolling sea. till it lifted and showed us the land we were seeking the broad smiling waste where our station would be! Limit: 60 CODE COST WALKER DYW $365 LEADER DYL This year long serving Trail Boss Peter Dymock is back with a trail into the heart of the Southern Alps with a circumnavigation of the head of Lake Hawea and into the remote Hunter Valley, the source of Lake Hawea. Although passing through spectacular alpine and lake scenery, the trail is on a good track the whole way that never rises more the 200m above the Lake. It essentially follows the most interesting “off road” part of the annual Contact Energy mountain bike challenge - if they can bike it, you can walk it! There will be plenty of opportunity for swimming and fishing, so bring your togs and rods... The Trail will be fully catered by the Alexandra Primary school PTA and all your overnight baggage will be transported for you. You only need carry a daypack on the trail. We meet at the Hawea Flat Hall on Tuesday evening of the 23rd February 2010 where we overnight. There will be secure car parking near the hall for the duration of the trail. Wednesday will be a fairly cruisey shakedown day with a short bus trip to Timaru Creek, then a 16km walk into Dingleburn Station where we overnight at the woolshed, courtesy of the Mead family. Thursday is a 25km walk up the east shore of Lake Hawea, then a ford of the Hunter River to overnight in tents at the Boundary Creek Hut complex, a lovely remote setting in the Hunter Valley, sheltered by mature trees. If the Hunter River is too high to cross on foot, we will be boating across it. Friday is the longest day with a 27km walk down the west side of the Lake Hawea to the Hunter Valley Station woolshed right on the shores of the lake, courtesy of the Cochrane family. The trail climbs above the lake with great views. Saturday will be a bit of a sleep in, then a half hour bus trip back to the cars at Hawea Flat, where we will make our way into Wanaka to change into “period” costumes in time for the grand parade at high noon with all the other trails. 2 ‘Back Country Cuisine’ Prospectors - WALKING TRAIL Crown Range to Wanaka Trail Boss: Sam Graham Phone: 03 445 4416 Fax: 03 445 4417 Email: [email protected] Duration: 5 Days Meet: Monday 22 February Limit: 12 CODE COST CODE COST WALKER GRW $280 LEADER GRL Fitness: This trail is for very fit, boot hardened people only.
