Rosso di Sera A path flanked by black cypresses winds gently on the horizon, a line that combines rich landscape of farm-houses and a red sky at night. Gardens full of vegetables are grown by old and experienced hands, while the aroma of fresh wine from the cellar blends with the fragrance of warm wind loaded by scents of wheat, lavender and rosemary..... Tuscany. Take a journey.... Heading out of Casole famous wine regions are within reach..... where would you like to go? It is easy to say “Tuscany”. Everyone knows its beautiful cities, its landscape and slopes of olive groves, its products and fine cuisine. Yet, around the corner, behind those hills, along the country walks there is another village to discover and a further church to visit. Ironically, Tuscany is unknown to most. Just like its people, genuine and proud, friendly at a first glance, however difficult to understand if you do not share their history. Just like its wines, exported all over the world and yet so little appreciated and identified. By placing Casole right in the middle we started our journey through famous and undiscovered wine areas, selecting not only the wines but also the estates that were, to us, representing the terroir between respect of nature and a modern approach to local production. We have spoken to several wine producers and to them we asked their stories and carefully listened. Those stories, their passion and the difficult choices they had to make had become our stories to tell. At Castello di Casole we do not describe our wines, rather we tell stories.

  • The Wine Picker Willian Hutchinson
The wine picker Wine Picker Ecole du Champagne Maremma in pursuit of terroir 22 maggio 2015Wine ReportsBy Delphine Veissiere Home to the Etruscans, the Maremma is a vast area along the Tuscan coast that stretches from south of Livorno to south of Grosseto. In the southern part, it extends far inland to Scansano and Pitigliano. Broadly speaking, we can divide the Maremma into two distinct regions: North and South. In terms of red wine, the North is home to the “Super Tuscans,” wines that are made from international varieties, while the The wine picker Southern denominations are predominantly Sangiovese. On the other hand, Northern whites often include Vermentino as the core component of the blend in the denominations, and there are also single grape varietal wines allowed from other grapes. In the South, where Trebbiano Toscano, Ansonica, and Vermentino play important roles, there are two white-only denominations and a wider variety of white grapes permitted. Differences in altitude and exposure to the sea winds and its cooling effects create a multitude of microclimates, oftentimes within the same vineyard. Some vineyard areas are protected from the sea by the initial foothills and so have a more continental climate, with a greater diurnal temperature range. In fact, two wineries within 6km of each other in Suvereto have different climates: one is continental and the other is maritime. Soil types range from sand, clay, and stone, in the lower altitudes to calcaire, rocks, and sandstone in the higher altitudes, especially around Scansano, where vineyards are planted up to 500m above sea level.
