Applying the Polygon Angle
POLYGONS 8.1.1 – 8.1.5 After studying triangles and quadrilaterals, students now extend their study to all polygons. A polygon is a closed, two-dimensional figure made of three or more non- intersecting straight line segments connected end-to-end. Using the fact that the sum of the measures of the angles in a triangle is 180°, students learn a method to determine the sum of the measures of the interior angles of any polygon. Next they explore the sum of the measures of the exterior angles of a polygon. Finally they use the information about the angles of polygons along with their Triangle Toolkits to find the areas of regular polygons. See the Math Notes boxes in Lessons 8.1.1, 8.1.5, and 8.3.1. Example 1 4x + 7 3x + 1 x + 1 The figure at right is a hexagon. What is the sum of the measures of the interior angles of a hexagon? Explain how you know. Then write an equation and solve for x. 2x 3x – 5 5x – 4 One way to find the sum of the interior angles of the 9 hexagon is to divide the figure into triangles. There are 11 several different ways to do this, but keep in mind that we 8 are trying to add the interior angles at the vertices. We prove eight necessary and sufficient conditions for a convex quadri- lateral to have congruent diagonals, and one dual connection between equidiag- onal and orthodiagonal quadrilaterals. Quadrilaterals with both congruent and perpendicular diagonals are also discussed, including a proposal for what they may be called and how to calculate their area in several ways. Finally we derive a cubic equation for calculating the lengths of the congruent diagonals. 1. Introduction One class of quadrilaterals that have received little interest in the geometrical literature are the equidiagonal quadrilaterals. They are defined to be quadrilat- erals with congruent diagonals. Three well known special cases of them are the isosceles trapezoid, the rectangle and the square, but there are other as well. Fur- thermore, there exists many equidiagonal quadrilaterals that besides congruent di- agonals have no special properties. Take any convex quadrilateral ABCD and move the vertex D along the line BD into a position D such that AC = BD. Then ABCD is an equidiagonal quadrilateral (see Figure 1). C D D A B Figure 1. In a convex quadrilateral ABCD, the sides are labeled a = AB, b = BC, c = CD and d = DA, and the diagonals are p = AC and q = BD. We use θ for the angle between the diagonals. The line segments connecting the midpoints of opposite sides of a quadrilateral are called the bimedians and are denoted m and n, where m connects the midpoints of the sides a and c. -

A Congruence Problem for Polyhedra
A congruence problem for polyhedra Alexander Borisov, Mark Dickinson, Stuart Hastings April 18, 2007 Abstract It is well known that to determine a triangle up to congruence requires 3 measurements: three sides, two sides and the included angle, or one side and two angles. We consider various generalizations of this fact to two and three dimensions. In particular we consider the following question: given a convex polyhedron P , how many measurements are required to determine P up to congruence? We show that in general the answer is that the number of measurements required is equal to the number of edges of the polyhedron. However, for many polyhedra fewer measurements suffice; in the case of the cube we show that nine carefully chosen measurements are enough. We also prove a number of analogous results for planar polygons. In particular we describe a variety of quadrilaterals, including all rhombi and all rectangles, that can be determined up to congruence with only four measurements, and we prove the existence of n-gons requiring only n measurements. Finally, we show that one cannot do better: for any ordered set of n distinct points in the plane one needs at least n measurements to determine this set up to congruence. An appendix by David Allwright shows that the set of twelve face-diagonals of the cube fails to determine the cube up to conjugacy. Allwright gives a classification of all hexahedra with all face- diagonals of equal length. 1 Introduction We discuss a class of problems about the congruence or similarity of three dimensional polyhedra. -

We make no claim to completeness, but we do promise a dazzling display of beautiful, elementary mathematics. We prove Heron’s formula, Cauchy’s theorem on the rigidity of polyhedra, Cayley’s generalization of Heron’s formula to higher dimensions, Menger’s characterization of abstract semi-metric spaces, a result of G¨odel on metric spaces on the sphere, and Schoenberg’s equivalence of distance and positive semidefinite matrices, which is at the basis of Multidimensional Scaling. Keywords: Euler’s conjecture, Cayley-Menger determinants, Multidimensional scaling, Euclidean Distance Matrix 1 Introduction Distance Geometry (DG) is the study of geometry with the basic entity being distance (instead of lines, planes, circles, polyhedra, conics, surfaces and varieties). As did much of Mathematics, it all began with the Greeks: specifically Heron, or Hero, of Alexandria, sometime between 150BC and 250AD, who showed how to compute the area of a triangle given its side lengths [36]. After a hiatus of almost two thousand years, we reach Arthur Cayley’s: the first paper of volume I of his Collected Papers, dated 1841, is about the relationships between the distances of five points in space [7]. The gist of what he showed is that a tetrahedron can only exist in a plane if it is flat (in fact, he discussed the situation in one more dimension).
