It was felt that a European exchange should not be hampered by the absence of colleagues from East European countries. A full understanding of interactions between Gender, Science and Technology, includes cultural and historical data; learning from international comparison is a prerequisite. More effort should be given to encourage involvement from East European colleagues in the next GASAT Conference. When the Eindhoven University Group took the initiative to organize the Third European GASAT Conference in 1992 one of its main objectives became to get together participants from East and West Europe. With financial assistance of the Eindhoven University of Technology a planning committee was constituted. The committee has taken full responsi- bility for all aspects concerning the conference, assisted by a Dutch and an International Advisory Board as well. All groups have been working hard to realize the third European GASAT conference as a meeting of colleagues from East and West, where current initiativesin research and intervention programmes will be discussed and joint European projects challenged. The planning committee is thankful for support from the Dutch Ministry of Education and Science and also from Hutch industry. Of course the most important contribution is coming from the participants. We received 43 papers of which 12 by authors from last-European countries. They have been classified according to the main themes and sub-themes of the conference and are published in that order in two volumes. It is our sincere wish that this flying start is the prelude of a succesful conference! On behalf of the planning committee, Marijke van Vonderen Maria Brand INTRODUCTION GASAT conferences bring together women and men who are concerned to encourage research and interventions into all aspectsof gender differentiation in science and technology education and employment. Gender aspectsin the field of natural sciences and technology is the main subject of thisbook that consists of two volumes, containing the formal papers that havebeen accepted for the Third European GASAT Conference on Gender Scienceand Technology 1992. Following the tradition of GASAT-conferencesthe Contributions are distributed in advance of the conference. This procedurehas also been used at the first and second European GASATconferences at Elsinor, Denmark in 1986 and Jonkoping, Sweden in 1990. Objectives of this third conference are to provide perspectives on joint European projects and to stimulate exchange of ideas and experiences ineach European country with regard to current initiatives related to interventionand research in education, schooling and employment. Participants in the European GASAT Conference '92 representapproximately 25 countries. The planning committee received 43 paperswhich are organized according to four main themes and an excursion: 1. Education and Sc This theme includes papers which deal with the social contextof learning, instruction and eduction, but also includes papers whichfocus on the choice of school subjects, access totechnical educations and continuing adult education in the area of career development. For this theme 23 papers are submitted; they have been subdividedinto 6 subthemes. 2. Employment This theme includes papers which deal with values withregard to employment in engineering and the combination of work and family. Also papers focusing on restrictions and strategies of professional career development belong to this theme. Nine papers are submitted forthis theme and they have been divided in three subthemes. 3. Research Methodology and Evaluation of Interventions This theme consists of two subthery es, the first includes three papers which focus on research methodology and the second subtheme consists of three papers discussing evaluations of interventions. 4. Joint European Projects Three papers either discuss existing European projects or challenge setting up those projects Excursion: House of the Future In preparation of a GASAT-excursion to the Dutch Houseof the Future, two papers have been written. Ar the Conference they willbe discussed in one of the Workshops. Within each sub-theme the papers are arranged alphabeticallyaccording to the first author's name. Some of the papers contribute to more than onesub- theme. In that case other criteria such as distribution of authorsform East and West Europe and a maximum of four papers per sub-themehave been used for assignment to a theme. The English of the papers received before due time have beencorrected, if necessary. We are grateful to Jan Hardingfor her mediation. The formal papers published in these two volumes precede othercontributions to be expected at the conference:the keynote addresses, poster papers and theses for round table discussions. Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term.

We http://jhrp.oxfordjournals.org/ examine this proposition through the stories of Ajok, an Acholi woman who was abducted by the rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in northern Uganda and who was forced into marriage and motherhood. We consider how her stories contest discrimination by her neighbours and family since her return, creatively reinterpreting the past to defend her innocence and moral character throughout the war and to defend her rightful place in present society as an Acholi woman and mother. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) are infamous for their brutal training of young boys and girls, for forcing them to kill or harm others and for subjecting ‘new recruits’ to exhausting labour and unforgiving beatings in an effort to create loyal and obedient followers (Blattman and Annan, 2010).

I examine the way that her visible and oft-referenced pregnancy heightens the dramatic thrust of the tragicomedy, arguing that Alcumena’s otherness, emphasized visually and thematically by her pregnancy, serves as a destabilizing force which contributes both to the sense of comedic befuddlement and to the narrative’s potentially tragic stakes.

I am a Shropshire lad, born in Shrewsbury. “Shropshire born, Shropshire bred, strong in the body, thick in the head”. That’s a nice bit of poetry to launch us! I was born as an only child to parents who divorced when I was two years old, and I was really brought up by my grandparents. Because I was an only child stuck in the middle of sheep- laden fields, I developed an inner, imaginative life to get me through the days. I began to be interested in what you might call the inner life, who I am. I was very attracted to nature; in Shropshire there are beautiful landscapes. Then, one day, I just walked into a church. I was eleven years old, my family were not religious at all, and I can still smell the church now. It was obviously Harvest Festival. I went into this tiny church, and there were a few people dotted around and this man came out of a room in bright green. He started to say things, and I didn’t understand a word of it, but I was haunted by its beauty.
