AL SCHMITT Al Schmitt is a renowned recording and mix engineer whose acclaimed music career has spanned more than half a century. During that time Al has been awarded more accolades than any of his contemporaries including holding the record for most Grammy awards for a recording or mix engineer. To date, Al is the recipient of 23 Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Trustees Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006. In 2014, Al received the Honorary Doctorate from Berklee School of Music. Al is a New York native, of whom Barbra Streisand states, "as a fellow Brooklyn-ite, we speak the same language." He has worked on more than 150 gold and platinum albums, and was inducted into the TEC Awards Hall of Fame in 1997 to honor his technical and creative excellence in recording and sound. In the early days of his career, working at RCA, Al engineered albums for such legendary artists as Sam Cooke, Rosemary Clooney and Henry Mancini, featuring the Grammy Award winning title, "Moon River", which also won an Academy Award for Best Song, and for "Breakfast at Tiffany's." During this time he also worked on scoring for multiple motion pictures as well. In the mid 60's, while demand for his engineering services grew, Al also aspired to become an independent producer. In addition to recording all the last records of the legendary Sam Cooke, during this same period, Al also worked with Ann Margaret, Bobby Darin and Eddie Fisher. He also worked with newer, up and coming artists of the time including Jefferson Airplane, Jackson Browne and Neil Young.

  • And Type the TITLE of YOUR WORK in All Caps
A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV (Under the Direction of Corey W. Johnson) ABSTRACT This polyvocal text leveraged Post-Intentional Phenomenology (Vagle, 2010) to trouble, open up, and complexify understanding of the lived leisure experience (Parry & Johnson, 2006) of connection with and through music listening. Music listening was foregrounded as one horizon within the aural soundscape that affords deeply meaningful and significant experiences for many. Past scholarship within the Leisure Studies literature has primarily attended to the impact and relevancy of music in the lives of adolescents. This study focused on engagement with music of five adults, accessing phenomenology as both a philosophical and methodological lens to look along (Lewis, 1990) this lived-experience. Using multiple voices and styles of representation, this polyvocal work challenged traditional ways of knowing by inviting listening, music, and voice to serve as additional data embedded throughout its discursive representation. Accessing Bachelard‟s (1990) phenomenology of the resonation-reverberation doublet revealed five partial, fleeting, and tentative manifestations (Vagle, 2010) of this lived leisure experience, which included: Getting Lost: Felt Resonation and Embodiment; I‟m Open: Openness, Receptivity, and Enchantment; Serendipitous Moments; The Found Mirror: Oh There You Are; and Cairns and Echoes: The Lustering Potency of Song. Ultimately, music appeared to speak to so as to speak for participants, providing musical affirmation and sustenance throughout their lives. INDEX WORDS: Music, Listening, Leisure, Post-Intentional Phenomenology, Polyvocal Text A SPACE FOR CONNECTION: A PHENOMENOLOGICAL INQUIRY ON MUSIC LISTENING AS LEISURE by JOSEPH ALFRED PATE IV B.

Harmony at Harmonia? Glamor and farce in Hello, Dolly!, from Wilder to Kelly Julie Vatain-Corfdir & Émilie Rault When Hello, Dolly! opened on Broadway in January 1964, immediately to be hailed as “a musical shot through with enchantment,”1 New York audiences were by no means greeting Dolly for the first time. Through a process of recycling which probably owed as much to the potential of the original story as it did to a logic of commercial security, the story of Mrs. Dolly Levi – the meddling matchmaker who sorts out everyone’s love lives and contrives to marry her biggest client herself – had been prosperous on stage and screen for the previous ten years, and would continue to attract audiences to this day.2 Not unlike My Fair Lady, which previously held the record for longest-running Broadway musical, Hello, Dolly! trod on the “surer road to success,”3 with a book based on a popular play by an acclaimed playwright – Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker –, and one which had already been famously adapted to the screen with a cast starring, among others, Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLane.

  • How Jews Became Sexy, 1968–1983
Acting Jewish: Negotiating Ethnicity on the American Stage and Screen Henry Bial http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=147187 The University of Michigan Press chapter 4 How Jews Became Sexy, 1968–1983 “What’s a nice Jewish girl like me doing on the cover of Playboy?” This caption appears, self-referentially enough, on the cover of Playboy’s October 1977 issue,1 which features a photograph of Barbra Streisand, wearing white shorts and a T-shirt emblazoned with the Playboy logo, reclining across the bottom half of a large white circle; Streisand’s extended left leg forms a line that transforms the circle into a Q, which presumably refers to the questions she will answer in what the leading headline bills as: “THE FIRST IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH BARBRA STREISAND.” The caption (“What’s a nice Jewish girl . .”) appears suspended above and to the right of Streisand’s head, evoking a cartoon-style thought bubble. The location of the caption and the use of the ‹rst person (“like me”) suggests that this is a question that Streisand is asking herself. Yet perhaps there is a more interesting ques- tion: why has Playboy, the self-appointed arbiter of feminine sexual attractiveness, chosen to feature “a nice Jewish girl” on its cover? How did Streisand become, in fact, “the ‹rst female celebrity in 24 years” to pose for the magazine’s cover?2 In March of 1962, ‹fteen years prior to her Playboy appearance, Streisand made her Broadway debut as Miss Marmelstein in Jerome Weidman and Harold Rome’s I Can Get It for You Wholesale.

  • Past President's Message
SEPTEMBER 2014 ANNUITANTS ASSOCIATION Past President’s Message by Gene Humke In addition to all the activity concerning saving our pensions by SUAA now taking place in the Illinois Court System, there is also much activity within our own Chapter. Our activity, however, is a more personal nature. We as a chapter lost a leader with the death of our former President, October 15 • 8:30 a.m. Jack Hall. He died of metastasized cancer on Tuesday, July 22, 2014, Men’s Warm Oatmeal Club in rural Danvers at Hall’s Ponderosa. (This is the name the Hall family and Marching Society called their farm home.) Jack was a leader because his commanding Busy Corner • Goodfield voice and his message required your attention. I am continuing on in the leadership position but as the Past —— • —— President of the ICCAA. At our June Annual Meeting no one volunteered October 27 • Midnight to become President of the ICCAA. Jack’s membership on the Executive Newsletter Deadline Board ended with our June Annual Meeting this year. My membership will end as Past President with the 2015 June Annual Meeting. A new volunteer to be President can take this position now but definitely must by the June 2015 Annual Meeting. Perhaps this new President will not actually live in the Peoria area. This would be possible because electronic media can make it possible via conference calls and also email. I have also suspended all regular meetings of the ICCAA due to lack of attendance except for the June Annual Meeting. This is illegal according to our Constitution, but my being “acting” President is also illegal.

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term.
