REPRESENTED BY JOHN WANAMAKER PHILADELPHIA PA. Unfinished Symphony in B minor Franz Schubert (Born at Lichtenthal, near Vienna, January 31, 1797; died at Vienna, November 19, 1828.) Two brothers, Anselm and Joseph Htittenbrenner, were fond of Schubert. Their home was in Graz, Styria, but they were living at Vienna. Anselm was a musician; Joseph was in a government office. Anselm took Schubert to call on Beethoven, and there is a story that the sick man said, "You Anselm, have my mind; but Franz has my soul." Anselm closed the eyes of Beethoven in death. These brothers were constant in endeavor to make Schubert known. Anselm went so far as to publish a set of " Erl King Waltzes," and assisted in putting Schubert's opera, "Alfonso and Estrella" (1822) in rehearsal at Graz, where it would have been performed if the score had not been too difficult for the orchestra. In 1822 Schubert was elected an honorary member of musical societies of Linz and Graz. In return for the compliment from Graz, he began the Symphony in B minor, No. 8 (October 30, 1822). He finished the Allegro and the Andante, and he wrote nine measures of the Scherzo. Schubert visited Graz in 1827. but neither there nor elsewhere did he ever hear his unfinished work. Anselm Htittenbrenner went back to his home about 1820, and it was during a visit to Vienna that he saw Beethoven dying. Joseph remained at Vienna, and in i860 he wrote from the office of the Minister of the Interior a singular letter to Johann Herbeck, who then conducted the concerts of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. He begged permission to sing in the concerts as a member of the society, and urged him to look over symphonies, overtures, songs, quartets, choruses, by Anselm. He added, toward the end of the letter: "He [Anselm] has a treasure in Schubert's B minor symphony, which we put on a level with the great symphony in C, his instrumental swan- song, and any one of the symphonies by Beethoven." Perhaps he was afraid that, if the manuscript came to light, he could not gain possession of it and the symphony like the one in C, would be produced elsewhere than at Vienna. Perhaps he thought the price of producing one of Anselm Hiitten- brenner's works in Vienna too dear, and there is reason to believe that Joseph insisted on this condition (see "Johann Herbeck," by L. Her- beck, Vienna, 1885, p. 165). In 1865 Herbeck was obliged to journey with his sister-in-law, who sought health. They stopped in Graz, and on May 1 he went to Ober- Andritz, where the old and tired Anselm, in a hidden, little one-story cottage, was awaiting death. Herbeck sat down in a humble inn. He talked with the landlord, who told him that Anselm was in the habit of breakfasting there. While they were talking, Anselm appeared. After a few words Herbeck said, "I am here to ask permission to pro- duce one of your works at Vienna." The old man brightened, his indifference dropped from him, and after breakfast he took him to his home. The work-room was stuffed with yellow and dusty papers, all in confusion. Anselm showed his own manuscripts, and finally Herbeck chose one of the ten overtures for performance. "It is my purpose," he said, "to bring forward three contemporaries, Schubert, Hiittenbrenner, and Lachner, in one concert before the Viennese public. It would naturally be very appropriate to represent Schubert by a new work." "Oh, I have still a lot of things by Schubert," answered the old man; and he pulled a mass of papers out of an old-fashioned chest. Herbeck immediately saw on the cover of a manuscript "Sym- phonic in H moll," in Schubert's handwriting. Herbeck looked the symphony over. "This would do. Will you let me have it copied TXTE can surprise you with our won- derful success in cleaning delicate gowns and other clothing. We are experts. The most elaborately trimmed gown is not too difficult for us. So, if your favorite wrap, your daintiest gown has become soiled or stained, send it to us and we will make it almost as good as new. Gaston Leroux's 1911 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, has a considerable number of allusions, some of which are accessible to modern American audiences, like references to Romeo and Juilet. Many of the references, however, are very specific to the operatic world or to other somewhat obscure fields. Knowledge of these allusions would greatly enhance the experience of readers of the novel, and would also contribute to their ability to interpret it. Thus my thesis aims to be helpful to those who read The Phantom of the Opera by providing a set of notes, as it were, to explain the allusions, with an emphasis on the extended allusion of the Palais Garnier and the historical models for the heroine, Christine Daae. Notes on Translations At the time of this writing, three English translations are commercially available of The Phantom of the Opera.

  • The Interest of These Performances Lies First and Foremost
    The interest of these performances lies first and foremost - not to mention finally and most importantly- in the tempos: in the way they are chosen, establi shed, and shrewdly modified by Fiedler in the course of performances which so interestingly live, move and have their being. There are other points of interest. The nature of the use of string portamentos: in the case of Fiedler and the Berlin Philharmonic, the selective and highly discriminating use of it. Yet, as Christopher D yment pointed out in a pair of articl es published in Classical Record Collector a decade ago (Summer and Autumn, 2002), it would be an overstatement to call him a protCgC of the composer. Fiedler knew Brahms personally, and likely heard him conduct on a few occasions; however, it was as a follower of Hans von Bulow that Fiedler learned what he believed to be the authentic Brahms style, a highly subjective, rhythmically free approach that was at odds with the more restrained Classicism of Fritz Steinbach, who provided a model for the young Weingartner. Nevertheless, by early in the last century, Fiedler had earned the reputation in Germany as a Brahms specialist, and it was in that capacity that he made his only commercial records for Grammophon/ Polydor, all of which are presented here.

    SYMPOSIUM RECORDS CD 1109 The Great Violinists – Volume 4 ADOLF BUSCH (1891-1952) This compact disc documents the early instrumental records of the greatest German-born musician of this century. Adolf Busch was a legendary violinist as well as a composer, organiser of chamber orchestras, founder of festivals, talented amateur painter and moving spirit of three ensembles: the Busch Quartet, the Busch Trio and the Busch/Serkin Duo. He was also a great man, who almost alone among German gentile musicians stood out against Hitler. His concerts between the wars inspired a generation of music-lovers and musicians; and his influence continued after his death through the Marlboro Festival in Vermont, which he founded in 1950. His associate and son-in-law, Rudolf Serkin (1903-1991) maintained it until his own death, and it is still going strong. Busch's importance as a fiddler was all the greater, because he was the last glory of the short-lived German school; Georg Kulenkampff predeceased him and Hitler's decade smashed the edifice built up by men like Joseph Joachim and Carl Flesch. Adolf Busch's career was interrupted by two wars; and his decision to boycott his native country in 1933, when he could have stayed and prospered as others did, further fractured the continuity of his life. That one action made him an exile, cost him the precious cultural nourishment of his native land and deprived him of his most devoted audience. Five years later, he renounced all his concerts in Italy in protest at Mussolini's anti-semitic laws.

Andréa René Franke Operatic Observation of the Audience: Examining Chapter One of Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence Andréa René Franke The act of observation, as defined by Professor Lawrence Wheeler’s Fall 2012 Syllabus for his course titled “Theatron”, is “a morally complex act undertaken by qualified agents, operating through recognized and formalized practices, in a specific venue, and in possession of a carefully delimited vocabulary of discourse.” Throughout many disciplines this formalized practice can be identified in many forms while still prescribing to this narrow definition. This essay will show how this definition of observation is applied to early 20th century American literature in Edith Wharton’s The Age of Innocence (1920) by examining the first chapter of Wharton’s museum cultured novel.
