Membership Kathy Fewox HCSS celebrated its anniversary on July 24, 2019 by having a potluck dinner. Seventeen members attended the meeting. There was lots of wonderful food to enjoy, and good company. Cindy Gray donated four Tephro- cactus plants, two for the raffle and two as door prizes. Our meeting on August 28 was attended by nineteen members who braved the threat of rain and flooding to reach the Multi-Service Center. Most of us managed to get there with little trouble, as the worst of the rain had moved south of the 610 loop by about 6:30 p.m. However, Robert Smith got stuck in rain-delayed traffic on his trip in from Highlands, and didn’t arrive until the meeting was officially over. Also attending were four guests: Chris Balshaw, Aditi Nabar, Ziona Burkett (a Florida friend of BonnieJean Grady’s), and Mariela Hiraldo (daughter of Alan Schachter). Dave Thomas donated a Carnegiea gigantea (Giant Saguaro) as a door prize. It isn’t giant yet, but winner Frank Lee is hoping it will grow into its name. -

ABSTRACT The morphological characteristics of five species of pollen from the subfamily Cactoideae, family Cactaceae, were described: Three species, Echinopsis chalaensis (Rauh & Backeb.) Friedrich & G.D.Rowley, Haageocereus decumbens (Vaupel) Backeb. and Pygmaeocereus sp. Johnson & Backeb., (Trichocereeae tribe); Corryocactus brevistylus (K. Schum. ex Vaupel) Britton & Rose (Pachycereeae tribe) and Neoraimondia arequipensis (Meyen) Backeb., (Browningieae tribe). All pollen grains observed under a light microscope appeared in monades, shape varying from spheroidal to spheroidal oblate; all colpate, with the exception of C. brevistylus, with spinules < 1 µm to 2 µm; exine thickness varied 2 - 3 µm; tectum without perceptible differences, always was pierced. -

LAS PEÑAS1 Summary: DNA content and pattern of ribosomal genes in the monotypic genus Stetsonia (Cactaceae). Stetsonia coryne is a tree is tree-sized plant, with large and infundibuliform flowers (12 -15 cm). It is native to the deserts of northwestern Argentina and Bolivia, and is the only species of the genus Stetsonia. The aim of this study was to characterize this species cytologically. For this, the nuclear DNA content, chromosome number, karyotype, banding patterns and location of ribosomal genes of the species was determined. The DNA content analysis revealed a mixture of nuclei with three peaks, 2C, 4C and 8C, indicating a process of endopoliploidy on the species, being this the first report for the tribe Browningieae. It presented chromosome number of 2n = 22, with a symmetrical karyotype of 22 m, with the first pair with satellite. With fluorescent chromosome banding technique, two types of bands were observed: CMA+/ DAPI- associated centromere and NOR associated. With FISH technique, we observed that 18-5.8-26S loci were consistent with CMA+/DAPI-/NORs blocks. The signal for the 5S gene is located in a centromeric region (pair 10). This document has been prepared by Mr James Grogan under contract with the CITES Secretariat.1 2. Background information can be found in two key CITES documents: CoP15 Doc. 55, submitted by the Management Authority of Switzerland, describes the issue under consideration in this report, whether certain genera of epiphytic cacti (seven as listed below) should be excluded from Appendix II based on the preponderance of artificially propagated compared to wild- collected specimens in international trade; IUCN Red List conservation status is reviewed, and trade data for gross exports of wild-collected specimens from range nations during 1975–2008 are presented; PC19 Doc. 14.1, prepared by the Chair of the Working Group on the Periodic Review with assistance from the Scientific Authority of Mexico, presents further analysis of trade data during 1998–2008 including the number of specimens of epiphytic cacti in trade that were artificially propagated, number of records and specimens that were wild collected, confiscated or seized, or of unknown origin during this period, and geographic ranges of species in question. In this study, 34 Cactaceae species from the Calchaquíes Valleys, Argentina, were studied to determine 1) species rarity level, 2) proportion of rare species among taxonomic and ecological groups and, 3) whether rareness is consistently distributed throughout the species geographical ranges. We used a model where rarity is defined by the geographic range and the local population size to define species rarity. Rareness was not concentrated in any particular taxonomic or ecological group of Cactaceae; however 28 species were rare at some level. In most species, rarity varied across the geographical range, only five species remained consistently rare in all the surveyed populations. Six species qualified as extremely rare, all from the Cactoideae subfamily, four endemic to the southernmost Central Andes and differing in their growth forms. Only two of the 34 studied species, appeared as both extremely and consistently rare across its distribution. Determining rarity levels is useful for identifying species that may be in danger and/or in need for further studies. Rarity, used as an indicator of species vulnerability, allowed us, to identify Cactaceae species that are more vulnerable to anthropogenic or natural disturbance, compared with common species.
