50TH ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN

‘The beating heart of the of the future’

Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the and Honorary of Wolfson College 1965 – 2015 1965 – 2015

SUPPORT YOUR COLLEGE ✦ SUPPORT CAMBRIDGE

For 50 years, Wolfson College has been at the forefront of innovation in our ancient University. As well as celebrating this important milestone, we are fundraising to support our most important members: our students. The 50th Anniversary Campaign, which runs until 2017, aims to raise £5m for student support and improved student accommodation. We are over half way towards this goal, and your help will make a difference to the Wolfson students of the next 50 years.

You can see what Wolfson members have to say about the College below, and at www.wolfson.cam.ac.uk/alumni/WolfsonFilm

‘The future of Cambridge is with you’, the Vice-Chancellor told Wolfson alumni at the College’s 50th Anniversary London Reception this year. A Wolfson member himself, he explained that postgraduate students in particular were ‘the engine room that drives Cambridge to the top’. As an institution for mature students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, Wolfson has a special role to play in building Cambridge’s future.

As student Kei Tateyama (Pharmacology) tells us, a conference grant from Wolfson has helped her connect with world experts in neuroscience. Her multidisciplinary research will help to save lives by bringing new understanding to the treatment of the psychiatric disorder with the highest mortality rate.

Alice Gathoni (Education) has recently completed an MPhil, working to help children with disabilities make the difficult transition into adult life. She plans to set up a mentoring programme to help the children she says inspire her every day. Thanks to the support of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Kenya at Wolfson, the dream became a reality. ‘The community that came together to help me didn’t expect anything back. But I wanted to say thank-you,’ she said. Wolfson ‘respects the traditions but is much more interested in the future.’

Caspar Schwalbe, PhD student, Materials Science

Kutlo Kebaikanye (Engineering) came to study at Wolfson to help reduce energy inequalities in his home country of Botswana, where everything from firewood and paraffin to electricity is used as a source of energy. Kutlo’s work on ways to produce energy more efficiently has the potential to have enormous impact when he returns home. He has made good friends at the College, saying, ‘The best thing about Wolfson is the diversity. I have had so many interesting conversations with people from all over the world, and have shared with them my stories of my own country.’

It was a natural choice for Nikita Appaswami (Corporate Law) to come to Wolfson. After brilliant results, she is set for a challenging career at a top law firm, helping to regulate India’s turbulent capital markets. Nikita wants to take her experience home to help protect investors from threats such as insider trading. She recently won a studentship named after the College’s former President, Professor Sir David Williams. Wolfson has offered not only a chance to achieve her ambitions but also a place to dream. ‘There’s a bench near the winter garden, and I just go with a book and get lost in thought,’ she says.

In his 50th Anniversary lecture, ‘But still the days seem the same’: Law and Social Change in Britain, 1965-2015, Professor Conor Gearty (1980) recalled how ‘original and brash the College was’ when it was conceived and what ‘a fantastic place it was to be a student, it was incredible.’ His experience of Cambridge was fundamentally enhanced by the people he met at Wolfson. He is now Professor of Human Rights Law at the London School of Economics, and a barrister at Matrix Chambers.

By giving to Wolfson, you will be playing a part in ensuring that it continues to be at the centre of the University’s vision for the future: to understand and solve the world’s problems. And a gift to Wolfson, while remaining with the College, also counts towards the University’s new fundraising campaign. ACHIEVING THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE ✦ SUPPORTING WOLFSON STUDENTS

Coming to Cambridge and settling into life at Wolfson is a great experience for new students. But fees are higher than ever and many grants have been replaced with loans. The expense of study is a deterrent to some of the brightest applicants. On average, a UK or EU student has to expect to spend at least £20,000 a year on fees and living costs. Fees for international students are considerably higher.

Wolfson already offers as much financial support as it can, but we would like to build up the number of studentships covering the annual cost of coming to Cambridge, fulfilling the Vice-Chancellor’s vision of Wolfson students as the engine room the drives Cambridge to the top.

Help us to ensure that Wolfson continues to be at the beating heart of collegiate Cambridge by contributing towards these studentships.

Our students greatly appreciate the support they receive and know that every donation makes a difference. Hear how their experience of the University has been transformed by their membership of Wolfson at www.wolfson.cam.ac.uk/alumni/ WolfsonFilm
