Standards for Minimum Disclosure Survey of Mongolian Public Opinion, February 18-March 18, 2008

The results of this poll will not be released by IRI. However, IRI is making available the methodology and the demographics to demonstrate that the poll complies with professional standards in the industry.

• The poll field work was conducted by the Academy of Sociology under the National University of , based in , Mongolia.

• Oversight and analysis was provided by Sarah Simmons in Washington, DC.

• The field work was conducted February 18 – March 18, 2008.

• The poll surveyed a nationwide random, multi-stage stratified representative sample.

• Sample size: 1,772; Eligibility criteria: age 18 and older; registered to vote; and intends to vote in the June, 2008 National Parliamentary elections.

• The questionaire was developed by IRI and Sarah Simmons in close consultation with the four main political parties in Mongolia. Political party officials submitted their questions after consultation with IRI staff.

• For entire sample of Mongolia (N=1,772) the margin of error is +/- 2.38 percent with a response rate of 95 percent.

• The population under study is representative for the adult population of Mongolia and included 11 aimags and nine districts in Ulaanbaatar. The aimags included in the survey are: Arkhangai, Bayan-Ulgii, Bulgan, Dundgobi, Dornod, Zavkhan, Uvurkhangai, Umnugobi, Khovd, Khuvsgul and Orkhon.

1. Outside of Ulaanbaatar, a minimum of two and maximum of five municipalites were randomly selected in each aimag – one per each category of municipality size (regional centers, middle and small size municipalities). Sample covered more than 28 municipalities in total.

2. In each municiaplity, urban and rural settlements were randomly selected from the list of all settlements.

3. The sample for Ulaanbaatar was divided equally amoung its nine districts. The districts included in the survey are: , , Khan-Uul, , Sukhbaatar, , Bayanzurkh, Bayangol, Songinokhairkhan.

4. Sample was set to around 33-66 percent ratio in urban and rural areas. Maximum number of interviews per one sampling point was four.

5. Household addresses were randomly selected using random walk technique.

6. Household members were randomly selected using last birthday technique.
