WEAPONIZED HUMOR: THE CULTURAL POLITICS OF TURKISH-GERMAN ETHNO-COMEDY by TIM HÖLLERING B.A. Georg-August Universität Göttingen, 2008 M.Ed., Georg-August Universität Göttingen, 2010 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Germanic Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) June 2016 © Tim Höllering, 2016 Abstract My thesis aims to show how the humor of Turkish-German ethno-comedians fulfills a double purpose of entertaining its audience while advancing a cultural political agenda that Kathrin Bower called “transnational humanism.” It includes notions of human rights consensus, critical self-reflection, respect, tolerance, and openness to cultural diversity. Promoting these values through comedy, the artists hope to contribute to abating prejudice and discrimination in Germany’s multi-ethnic society. Fusing the traditional theatrical principle of “prodesse et delectare” with contemporary cultural politics, these comedians produce something of political relevance: making their audience aware of its conceptions of “self” and “other” and fostering a sense of community across diverse cultural identifications. My thesis builds mainly on the works of Kathrin Bower, Maha El Hissy, Erol Boran, Deniz Göktürk, and Christie Davies. Whereas Davies denies humor’s potential for cultural impact, Göktürk elucidates its destabilizing power in immigrant films. Boran elaborates this function for Turkish-German Kabarett. El Hissy connects Kabarett, film, and theater of polycultural artists and ties them to Bakhtin’s concept of the carnivalesque and the medieval jester. Bower published several essays on the works of ethno-comedians as humorous catalysts for advancing a multiethnic Germany. -

Trieu1 and Hana C. Lee1 Abstract Internalized racial oppression among Asian Americans is currently an understudied topic in the social sciences. In this article, the authors draw from 52 in-depth interviews with 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian Americans to examine this phenomenon. Although previous studies have examined individuals who engage in, and reproduce, internalized racial oppression from static lenses, the present research shows that individuals can (and do) shift out of perceptions and behaviors that perpetuate internalized racism. This research pinpoints the factors that assist in this fluid process. The findings show that the factors are centrally framed around the theme of critical exposure. In particular, it is the critical exposure to ethnic and racial history, ethnic organizations, and coethnic ties that ultimately leads to the emergence of an empowering critical consciousness, which is the necessary key in diverting Asian Americans away from behaviors that perpetuate internalized racial oppression. In “The Semantics of Racial Slurs,” an article recently published in Linguistic and Philosophical Investigations, Hedger (2012) draws upon Kaplan’s (1999) distinction between descriptive and expressive content to argue that slurs are expressions with purely expressive content. Here I review the key considerations presented by Hedger (2012) in support of his purely expressive account of slurs and provide clear reasons for why it must ultimately be rejected. After reviewing the key cases Hedger (2012) offers for consideration in support of his view that slurs are expressions with purely expressive content, this article provides a critical evaluation of these cases, pointing out at least 13 ways in which his purely expressive analysis of slurs fails. In considering the 13 ways in which the purely expressive analysis of slurs remains inadequate, this article concludes with the suggestion that an adequate account of slurs will ultimately involve not only an expressive aspect but a descrip- tive aspect also. DEMOGRAPHIC SNAPSHOT OF SOUTH ASIANS IN THE UNITED STATES April 2019 This factsheet, based primarily on Census 2010 and the 2017 American Community Survey, provides a national snapshot of the South Asian American community. We encourage community leaders, government entities, policymakers, and the media to use this data to better understand South Asian Americans and help inform their engagement with this community. Who are South Asians? The South Asian community in the United States includes individuals who trace their ancestry to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The community also includes members of the South Asian diaspora – past generations of South Asians who originally settled in other parts of the world, including the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Canada and the Middle East, and other parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. Population Numbers at a Glance Below are some key facts about the national population in the United States from Census 2010 data and the 2017 American Community Survey: ➢ Nearly 5.4 million South Asians live in the United States tracing their roots to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the diaspora, including but not limited to Trinidad/Tobago, Guyana, Fiji, Tanzania, and Kenya.1 This is up from 3.5 million counted in Census 2010. ➢ Indians comprise the largest segment of the South Asian community, making up over 80% of the total population, followed by Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepali, Sri Lankans, and Bhutanese. ➢ Data is not readily available for diaspora South Asian communities specifically the Indo-Caribbean, and Indo-African communities. Population Growth The South Asian American community grew roughly 40% between 2010 and 2017. -

Challenges of Policy and Practice in Under- Resourced Asian American Communities: Analyzing Public Education, Health, and Development Issues with Cambodian American Women Shirley Tangt I. INTRODUCTION According to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent American Community Survey ("ACS"), the growth of the Asian American population has outpaced that of all other racial groups in Massachusetts. From 2000 to 2005, the Asian American population increased by 23%; meanwhile, the Latino and Black populations grew by 14.5% and 6% respectively, and the White population declined by 4%.' Such growth has resulted in ever greater ethnic, socioeconomic, and language diversity for this population, which now includes recent immigrants and refugees of more than forty different ethnicities, together with those who have lived in the U.S. for generations. Limited methods of data collection and interpretation, however, have often portrayed Asian Americans as a homogeneous group, marginalizing important voices and perspectives-such as those of women who are low- income and speak little English. Such limitations perpetuate misconceptions among policymakers, researchers, and the general public.
