Legislative Council Secretariat FSC21/13-14 FACT SHEET Overview of Norway Geography Land area Norway, officially the Kingdom of Norway, is located in northern Europe. It has a total land area of 304 282 sq km divided into 19 counties. Oslo is the capital of the country and seat of government. Demographics Population Norway had a population of about 5.1 million at end-July 2014. The majority of the population were Norwegian (94%), followed by ethnic minority groups such as Polish, Swedish and Pakistanis. History Political ties Norway has a history closely linked to that of its immediate with neighbours, Sweden and Denmark. Norway had been an Denmark and independent kingdom in its early period, but lost its Sweden independence in 1380 when it entered into a political union with Denmark through royal intermarriage. Subsequently both Norway and Denmark formed the Kalmar Union with Sweden in 1397, with Denmark as the dominant power. Following the withdrawal of Sweden from the Union in 1523, Norway was reduced to a dependence of Denmark in 1536 under the Danish-Norwegian Realm. Union The Danish-Norwegian Realm was dissolved in between January 1814, when Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden as Norway and part of the Kiel Peace Agreement. That same year Sweden Norway – tired of forced unions – drafted and adopted its own Constitution. Norway's struggle for independence was subsequently quelled by a Swedish invasion. In the end, Norwegians were allowed to keep their new Constitution, but were forced to accept the Norway-Sweden Union under a Swedish king. Williams Copyright by Justin Tyler Peyton 2015 Abstract As ectotherms with high surface area to volume ratio, insects are particularly susceptible to desiccation and low temperature stress. In this dissertation, I examine the molecular underpinnings of two facets of these stresses: rapid cold hardening and cryoprotective dehydration. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) is an insect’s ability to prepare for cold stress when that stress is preceded by an intermediate temperature for minutes to hours. In order to gain a better understanding of cold shock, recovery from cold shock, and RCH in Sarcophaga bullata I examine the transcriptome with microarray and the metabolome with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GCMS) in response to these treatments. I found that RCH has very little effect on the transcriptome, but results in a shift from aerobic metabolism to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis during RCH and preserved metabolic homeostasis during recovery. In cryoprotective dehydration (CD), a moisture gradient is established between external ice and the moisture in the body of an insect. As temperatures decline, the external ice crystals grow, drawing in more moisture which dehydrates the insect causing its melting point to track the ambient temperature. To gain a better understanding of CD and dehydration in Belgica antarctica I explore the transcriptome with RNA sequencing ii and the metabolome with GCMS. -

The particularly strong rise in temperatures in the high 7 latitudes causes a rapid decline in sea ice (Fig. 1) and threatens the existence of highly sensitive ecosystems 6 (see AWI Fact Sheet „Climate Change in the Arctic“). But the dwindling ice is also making regions and sea routes 5 more accessible, which for a long time were reserved for Million km² adventurers, research expeditions and indigenous peo- ples: The Arctic sea routes, connecting the Pacific and 4 Atlantic north of the continents. This article investigates the agency of the Norwegian central bank during the German occupation and compares it with central banks in other German occupied countries. The Norwegian central bank seems to have been more accommodating to German wishes and demands than the central banks in other German occupied countries in Western Europe. -
