4 The BMW Club Journal October 2017 Well, another month has slipped by, but at least the weather has picked up a bit as I tap away on my keyboard, let’s hope we can all get some dry and sunny miles in. The Framlingham weekend was a storming success in terms of weather, accommodation, food and all round enjoyment. The entertainment in the form of a rejuvenated Elvis got the dance floor heaving on Saturday evening and the quiz on Sunday got everyone thinking. Where on earth did Dik get some of those questions from? The resurrection of a vintage and classic show was well received and there were some really trick machinery on display. October 2017 The BMW Club Journal 7 Stewart Lowthian plenty more similar examples. None of this is National Road Rally 2017 a problem if you read the details in advance but trying to make a route up as you go along would be a serious challenge. The benefit, of course, of having controls outside town centres is that you’re not stuck in urban traffic for half of the day. Planning my route was an iterative process. I’d try a route through controls in parts of the country I knew only to find that it fell five miles short of the distance I was aiming for. Eventually I had 300 miles ending at Sherburn-in-Elmet, the nearest Final Control to home. I then added an 100 mile loop so, if time permitted, a Silver award was possible. I didn’t consider Gold to be feasible at this stage. Having now a theoretical route it was time to sort out exactly where each control was, and for that I used every bit of technology I could muster. In principle I like to plan routes with traditional paper maps then use a GPS to sort out the details but some of the descriptions of where the controls were located were a little approximate so each of them was found, as precisely as possible, by searching Google Maps, which I find far easier than the arcane features of Garmin’s BaseCamp. What BaseCamp can do very well however is accept co-ordinates copied from Google Maps and pasted into the properties of a waypoint. A couple of mornings staring at the monitors and I had all the controls I needed located and saved in BaseCamp. Constructing a route from one to the next was straightforward, as was sending it to the Zumo, which reckoned my Silver route was 392 miles long and would take me exactly nine hours. This was a little puzzling as BaseCamp estimated that I needed more like 12 hours. I suspect that the difference is that BaseCamp allows me Was it Robert Freeman’s article on a rally in that all of them involved more miles than I to set very conservative average speeds for times gone by that prompted me to quote a thought so my first plan was to play safe and different road types whereas the Zumo has card number online to enter? After Langrick it was Horncastle, Gainsborough and Barnsley. By this time I was absolutely convinced of the need for a proper map somewhere in my line of sight. The Garmin had taken me to Langrick via the route I intended to use but it seemed to have taken a long time and there’s a limit to how many waypoints I can remember. Bypassing Barnsley to reach the control between there and Penistone was interminable. Again, I took the route I’d planned (an urban ring road where perhaps I should have risked the town centre) but in both cases what I wanted was reassurance that I wasn’t heading into the middle of nowhere. The Barnsley control was where I had a choice of route. Attendees. Apologies for absence were received from Cliff Cakebread (South East Section rep), Cath Broughton (Midland Section rep), Ashley Boal (Vintage Register secretary) and Robert Bensley (Sporting Register secretary). Administration and Finance. Steve Foreman has resigned and been replaced by Cath Broughton as Midland Section representative and Director. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted after amendments. Following from a discussion at the previous meeting Charlie Hall proposed that a bi-monthly Journal be considered, having asked whether the current content and presentation were what the membership wanted. In this context a survey of members was discussed. Ways of doing this by email to minimise costs are to be investigated. It is hoped that the majority of members will be sent their AGM booklet by email to save printing costs. The National Officers reports were presented and discussed. Jim Lepley (Treasurer) told the meeting that the Club’s cash holding is within £700 of the same time as last year although there was a pending invoice for £12,000 for a track day and the cost of the 2017 AGM had not yet been calculated. Debbie Sampson (Editor) said that she was considering changes to The Sections pages of The Journal and was concerned by the shortage of material available to fill the pages. Jim Bettley (Social Secretary) told the meeting that he was hopeful that he had found an accessible and affordable venue for future AGMs. To give the meeting the flexibility it needs to respond quickly to events the interpretation of our MAA was discussed and a working practice agreed. This will be proposed as a change to one MAA clause at the 2018 AGM. An inventory of our exhibition equipment will be made. Those with such equipment were asked to advise Stewart Lowthian of what they held. Advertising the Club in commercial publications was discussed with no clear conclusion. This will be revisited at the next meeting. Social. Our attendance at national and local shows was discussed. A detailed report of the Touratech Travel Event was presented by the Western Section who had represented the Club. The cost of attending shows to publicise the Club and it’s benefits to members was discussed. It was agreed that all future events would be costed in advance and agreed by the National Committee prior to incurring the cost of attending. It was agreed that we would continue to attend the same major national events (Peterborough, Kelso, Stafford and the NEC) but that less expensive options recommended by Jim Lepley would be used. BCEF Affiliation The first face-to-face meeting of BCEF, an umbrella body for Clubs permitted to use BMW’s trademarked name in their own name, is to take place in September and our President Ian Dobie and BCEF delegate Peter Dunn have been invited to attend. As Ian is unavailable for the meeting he asked Vice-President Alan Orme to attend in his place. It was agreed that we should attend the meeting. Date of next meeting - The 14th October 2017.
