The summer was filled with a flurry of activities with summer school, 8 Teacher Inservice Day – No School camps, and preparations for the arrival of our students. Indeed, children began 19 Picture Day classes eager to expand their knowledge, explore new concepts, and grow as 22-25 LS/US Book Fair scholars. Fun and Learning in the Summer Sun! What a great summer we had here at the Gateway Lower/Upper school! Students were challenged to explore and deepen their knowledge of reading, writing, and math. In all grade levels, students engaged in projects as well as in some grade levels field trips to help expand their knowledge of the world around them.

In the Lower School summer program, grade 2 students read a variety of fiction and nonfiction texts centered around a theme each week. They honed their phonics and fluency skills as well as their comprehension skills, focusing in particular on answering factual and inferential questions. Grade 3 completed a mini author study on Roald Dahl, using two texts – The Enormous Crocodile and George’s Marvelous Medicine. At the end of the unit, students created their own magical medicines in the spirit of George and created advertisements for these medicines as part of the project. Grade 4 read the mystery Bunnicula, with a focus on making inferences, crafting narratives and literary analysis, using context clues to determine the meaning of an unknown word, and analyzing theme. Students created a narrative piece of writing, crafting a portion of the story from Bunnicula’s point of view. Across all lower school, students worked on word problem attack strategies in math as well as strengthening their math content knowledge for their grade level.

In the Upper School summer program, 5th graders read the novel Rules, focusing on analyzing theme, making inferences, determining the meaning of unknown words, as well as answering critical thinking questions. Students also crafted narrative and analytical responses to various prompts for this book, and read related nonfiction texts to help build their background knowledge. Students also visited our school garden during this program, helping to cultivate the crops and maintain our garden over the summer.

Sixth graders participated in the networkwide Upper School summer program, which focused on health and wellness and the rich local resources for obtaining both in our greater Lawrence community. Students participated in a wide variety of activities designed to engage their brains and bodies, including weekly yoga classes, meditation sessions, and a visit from a local nutritionist. Each week, students took a field trip to a local garden or farmer’s market and used their purchases to cook foods such as jam, salsas, and homemade pizza. To deepen their understanding of where food comes from, students visited a local grocery store, a grocery distribution center, and took a trip to Stonyfield Yogurt. All visits and trips centered around the theme of health and wellness resources in our local community. As a capstone to the summer program, Upper School students learning students conducted research and made a presentation to reflect key healthy habits and cooking with insights from the summer. locally sourced ingredients.
