REFLECTING ON 2017

What an amazing year! Thanks to your kindness, generosity and support, our 33rd year in service was a tremendous success. It is difficult to capture everything that transpired and the whirlwind of events that took place during our 2017 campaign. In reﬂecting back over the year, we were fortunate to experience many achievements, receive a number of accolades and create special moments and cherished memories.

Camp Sunshine offered 22 programs and served 637 families (2,505 family members) from 46 states and 5 countries. We enhanced our outreach by visiting hospitals, clinics and fairs across the country and by partnering with Tropical Smoothie Café, placing information about Camp Sunshine in each of their cafes. The highlight was the unveiling of the Sunshine Smoothie & Sunshine Cup. We also expanded our transportation assistance program to families in need, thanks to the generosity of Hands on Tzedakah, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Noyes Brain Tumor Foundation, SEALs for Sunshine, Windham Automotive (Ron Eby), John & Ann Ewalt, Tropical Smoothie Café, and Texas Roadhouse. In fact, you may have even seen our branded van or bus on the road during your travels.

Our program continued to maintain its high standard of operations and service and once again achieved accreditation through the American Camp Association (ACA), maintained the honor of being a Gold Ribbon Camp with the Children’s Oncology Camping Association – International (COCA-I), and received the highest possible rating from GreatNonproﬁts. Most importantly, Camp Sunshine was awarded Charity Navigator’s top four-star rating for exhibiting sound ﬁscal management and transparency.

It seemed like each week more people were stepping up to help Camp Sunshine however they could. There were numerous plungers taking the polar dip, people ran road races & marathons to raise money, there were concerts, live bands, golf tournaments, and more. We hosted our 15th Pumpkin Festival on the campus of L.L. Bean and introduced our ﬁrst ever Watermelon Festival. More than twenty eager Navy SEALs and one Coast Guardsman completed a 10-mile, open water swim around Coronado Island, CA. to raise funds and awareness for Camp. Camp Sunshine was honored to receive the Newman’s Own / Fisher House Award

1 and was invited to the Hall of Heroes in the Pentagon to accept a grant to support military families with an ill child. Board member and longtime Camp Sunshine supporter Tim Porta, his wife Joan, and the entire Porta family along with Migis Lodge guests completed their Centennial Celebration by raising $250,000. Flip Flop Day, along with a variety of other initiatives hosted by Tropical Smoothie Café across the country, once again proved successful, raising $908,510.

As if everyone connected to Camp Sunshine doesn’t already know…we have the best volunteers in the world! Collectively, they were recognized as 100 Everyday Amazing by Massachusetts General Cancer Center. Individuals shining through this year included Camp Sunshine supporter Denis Litalien as a WCSH 6 Who Care Award winner, volunteer Sara Brown received the Governor’s Award for Service and Volunteerism, Emily Dziedzic took home a 2017 “20 Women of the Year Award” presented by Coast 93.1, Board Member Dan Shaw was selected by Camden National Bank for the Leaders and Luminaries Award and Carol Lee Tonge was honored with the Daily Points of Light Award created by the administration of George H. W. Bush to recognize individuals making a meaningful change in communities across America. What a Group!!

Along with our top-notch volunteers, there are others making a difference and we are fortunate and grateful to have expanded, developed and built relationships with national, regional and local corporate sponsors including: Tropical Smoothie Café, Texas Roadhouse, Day’s Jewelers, Stonewall Kitchen, Boston Bruins Foundation, L.L. We have further maintained and developed partnerships with various illness-related groups. These special and dedicated groups include: Bryan’s Dream Foundation, Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, Dyskeratosis Congentia Outreach, Fanconi Anemia Research Fund, A Kids’ Brain Tumor Cure Foundation, Lauren’s First and Goal, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Love is Magic, Noyes Brain Tumor Foundation, and Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Foundation.

As you can see, it was another incredible year with many great moments, milestones and events! We could not do it without you! The upcoming year promises to be equally as exciting as we have already broken ground and begun construction of our new 2,300 sq. ft. Tropical Smoothie Café Sports Center. It should be ready for the families to enjoy this spring.

Each year, every day and during the precious moments we share with our very special Camp families we are extremely grateful to all our donors, partners, volunteers, board members and staff who allow us to continue to build and strengthen our Camp Sunshine community. With your help and support, we will strive to serve more children with life-threatening illnesses and their families and spread awareness across the country and around the world.

Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy, for children with life- threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness.

Camp Sunshine is offered year-round with the distinction of having been designed to serve the entire family in a retreat model. The program is free of charge to families and includes on-site medical and psychosocial support. Bereavement sessions are also offered for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness.

3 PROGRAM HISTORY

Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine is nestled in the tranquil natural beauty of Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine. For seventeen years, Anna Gould and Dr. Larry Gould donated the facilities and personnel of Point Sebago Resort and hosted camp sessions for thousands of children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Dr. Gould retired as Chairman and CEO of M/A-Com, Inc., a Fortune 500 company, in 1983. After watching a television program about a summer camp for children with cancer, he and Anna decided to offer a similar program at their resort. Discussions with the chief of pediatric oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston resulted in Anna and Larry offering a pilot family camp for 43 children with cancer and their families in June 1984.

At the end of the ﬁrst session, when fathers thanked Anna and Larry for the week while crying and hugging them, they knew that this was a very special program. They continued to offer the program, at no charge to families, expanding to four weeks a year, two weeks in early June and two weeks in late September.

Through the years, the program became highly regarded, with increasing numbers of referrals from multiple medical centers. Demand for services far exceeded capacity, and it soon became apparent that Camp Sunshine had to have a permanent home where the program could expand to meet the growing need. In 2001, Camp Sunshine opened the doors of its own year-round facility on 24 acres donated by Anna and Larry.

Before 2001, Camp Sunshine was offering 4-6 sessions during the spring and autumn months, serving roughly 180 families (720 family members) each year. With the opening of the new campus and the addition of winter, spring, and other year-round programming, and thanks to the support of many generous donors and volunteers, Camp Sunshine’s program has grown dramatically. More than 23 sessions are now offered annually, serving as many as 700 families (2,800 family members) per year. Since Camp Sunshine’s inception in 1984, it has served over 50,000 family members from 50 states and 27 different countries.

Throughout this period of growth, Camp Sunshine has made signiﬁcant enhancements to its program and campus. Camp Sunshine now serves families of children diagnosed with cancer, hematologic conditions, kidney disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and those who have undergone solid organ transplantation. Bereavement programming for families who have experienced the death of a child from a supported illness began in 2002 and is hosted in the spring and fall.

In addition to expanding its program, Camp Sunshine has continued to enhance its campus in various ways. Most notably, in 2008 the Shaw Brothers Second Floor was added to the Viterbi Family Activities Center, and the addition of the Orokawa Foundation Family-Volunteer Center was completed in 2011. 45 LETTER FROM A CAMP FAMILY

Dear Texas Roadhouse,

Today is our last day at Camp. As we write you this letter, I have tears coming down my face and tears of joy in my heart. I have one child with Sickle Cell Anemia. I just wanted to come to camp to meet with other women who had kids with Sickle Cell so that we could relate to each other about this illness.

My daughter is six years old and coming to Camp Sunshine makes a great impact in her life. She enjoys the activities and making new friends, and it gives her the courage and inner strength to go through life. I just want to say how much I appreciate your generosity towards my family.

Also I would like to thank all the members and staff of Camp Sunshine and Texas Roadhouse for having us. Without your help the friendships we have built would not be possible.

8 THE POWER OF CAMP

Being a mother of two boys it has always been important to me to teach my children about counting your blessings and giving back, not only through words but through actions. Having had the fortune of being a member of an active church in Central, MA., I was ﬁrst introduced to a group called Young Neighbors In Action (YNIA). This is a group of teens (and adult leaders) who participate in week long summer service trips helping those in need, locally and country wide. My ﬁrst experience at Camp Sunshine was in 2010 through YNIA when I helped chaperone a group of teens from my church.

It was Low Grade Brain Tumor week and I have to admit I was extremely nervous – not knowing what to expect and thinking to myself “how can this possibly be a fun week?” Well, as any Camp Sunshine volunteer will tell you it’s the happiest place on Earth, in fact it’s been said that Camp Sunshine rates higher than Disney World! My week was emotionally and physically draining but mostly it was humbling, inspiring and fun!!! I never imagined the strength and heroism in the parents I met.

The next summer (2011) I really wanted to share this experience with my son Connor who was accepted into the YNIA Camp Sunshine trip. As a teen you have to prove you are mature and responsible enough to be a CS volunteer – and that usually comes senior year. It was our ﬁrst experience with an Oncology session - I was in tot lot and Connor was in the 6-8 group. It was a week where we shared the same feelings and experiences that no one (except other CS volunteers) could ever fully understand. I was so grateful for this gift we shared and will never forget it.

Since then my boys have grown and are off in the world doing their own things – but I wasn’t ready to give up – I was hooked and wanted to share this experience with other people I love. As Deepka Chopra says “Everyone has a purpose in life . . . a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal.” So in 2014/15 I brought my sisters, niece and my best friend! Some of whom are coming back with me this summer. I’ve been fortunate enough to have formed friendships with some of the families whom I keep in touch with throughout the year and am so grateful Camp Sunshine has come into my life. The seasons at Camp Sunshine are marked by the session calendar, and the days in the lives of Camp’s cohort of children living with life-threatening illnesses. Camp Sunshine is a place where families identify with one another, and are able to see the journey forward, through the course of each day and the medical routines they adhere to. Remarkably, families meet here and often grow to help one another throughout the course of their child’s illness.

When your child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, the whole world changes. Seasons stop mattering, and the work becomes about getting through the day. Camp Sunshine can help bring the sunshine back, and restore some of the details of life that get lost in the rigors of medical care. Steps from Sebago Lake, family members reconnect to nature, to each other, and to other families in similar situations, all of which come together to engender hope. The snow at Camp in the winter, soft and quiet as it is falling and the glistening of the sun, the smell of a cup of hot chocolate, or the image of snow angels coming to life (face up and face down) all allow time to slow down, making space for families to stop, reﬂect, and experience the warmth and compassion that the Camp community embodies.

Spring brings less brisk air, and temperatures that might have felt cold at summer’s end, but now feel warm in comparison to the season it left behind, a feeling not far from what it is like to have fun at Camp after time in the hospital. As the sun hits the lake in the summer, there is the unexpected kayak ride, the walk across the catwalk on the challenge course, a ﬁrst-time bullseye on the archery range, and a sense of adventure coupled with joy that comes from living in the moment and engaging in activities that symbolize vacation and more carefree times in life. The cooler air at summer’s end, and the reﬂection of a brilliant palate of colors on the tranquil lake emerge as sparks to reignite expectations in the fall.

Within each season, at the end of each phase of illness, hope remains, perhaps reframed from a different time, but present nonetheless. As new information is absorbed, meaningful connections are made, and families ﬁnd new strength, gathering energy for the days ahead. Hope is part of each day, in its own way, in its own moment: the rainbow that appears after the wishboat launch, the moose drinking a smoothie peeking into the dining room, the mountains of acorns near the playground, or the painted handprint of a young child. It is my wish that 2018 is ﬁlled with hopeful Camp Sunshine moments that you can hold on to and revisit as you journey through each day. - NANCY CINCOTTA, MSW, MPHIL, PSYCHOSOCIAL DIRECTOR 10 POSITIVITY AND HOPE

If I’ve learned one thing, it is that positivity and hope rubs off on people, and each experience at Camp Sunshine reinforces that idea. I ﬁrst came to Camp with my family in 2002 when I was three years old. I had been diagnosed with aplastic anemia, and my parents jumped on the opportunity to beneﬁt from the unique services that Camp offers to the entire family, not just the child in treatment. My family attended for several years, and when my parents switched to volunteering, I knew it was something I wanted to do when I became old enough. As soon as I turned 16, I began expanding my wardrobe through adding those yellow shirts, and the rest is history.

Describing what Camp can be is a relatively easy thing to do. Now, describing what Camp means, is near impossible, so I’m not even going to try. However, I do know that the bonds formed at Camp never break. From the parents, kids, and volunteers you meet, as soon as you walk through those three yellow doors, (I try to stay young and fit through the tiny one), it is pretty hard to not crack a smile. I spend most of my time volunteering in the 9-12 age group, which at times, gets a little crazy (the good kind of crazy, though), but there is nothing better than meeting a new kid or seeing a returning one that is ready to jump head-first into Camp activities. While the first hour of Camp mainly consists of ice breakers, and everyone is still slightly uneasy, seeing each kid break out of their shell is really an awesome thing. By the end of the week, you form such a strong connection with these families that it not only causes you to keep in touch outside of camp, but also makes you want to go back to Camp and do it all over again as soon as you can.

So, sure, you could deﬁnitely say that Camp is a pretty special place. Camp always ﬁnds a way to attract the most positive of people, and I’m so overwhelmed by the enormous amount of hope. I can honestly say that Camp Sunshine has enriched my life and so many others. I want to thank the staff, families, and volunteers for creating such a great atmosphere, because the memories everyone has made could not have been possible without you all.

I am pleased to present the Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake, Inc. audited financial report for the fiscal year starting November 1, 2016 and ending October 31, 2017. The report details another successful year of fundraising and financial management so necessary for Camp Sunshine to continue supporting children facing life-threatening illnesses and their families. This year over 3.5 million dollars was raised through the hard work of our staff and the support of our generous donors. This success has allowed Camp Sunshine to offer 22 sessions, host 637 families, maintain our campus, embark upon capital improvements and increase our endowment.

Each day, Camp Sunshine strives to best utilize available resources to optimize our program and earn the trust of the donors who so generously support our mission. This is why we are so proud to announce that Camp Sunshine has once again been awarded the coveted four-star rating by Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator. Camp Sunshine achieved a combined score on Financial Performance, and Accountability and Transparency, of 94.93%. As a result, Camp Sunshine was rated an “Exceptional” charity which, “Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause.” A full 85% of donations are used to directly support families participating in our program with just 8% and 6.9% used for fundraising and administrative costs, respectively.

Families often refer to their Camp Sunshine experience as “priceless”, but this year’s many successes could only have been achieved through the generosity of our thousands of donors and volunteers. Your contributions, both large and small, have helped create the priceless magic of Camp Sunshine. We are inspired every day by your generosity and are grateful to each and every one of you. Camp Sunshine simply could not exist without you.

KEVIN J. SILVERANG is the co-founding partner of Silverang, Donohoe, Rosenzweig & Haltzman, LLC. The ﬁrm provides sophisticated services for lenders, borrowers, developers and investors in various real estate acquisition, leasing, construction, development, ﬁnancing, restructuring and disposition transactions. Mr. Silverang holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Franklin & Marshall College, and obtained his law degree, cum laude, from Villanova University. He is a frequent lecturer on real estate subjects at seminars sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute. Mr. Silverang is an entrepreneur who has personally developed over $500 million of property and co-founded two multi-million dollar real estate equity funds. Kevin became interested in Camp Sunshine because of his lifelong close relationship with former board member - Joe Pappalardo, and wanted to support the great works that Camp Sunshine does in part because it is such a worthwhile cause and in part to continue Joe Pappalardo’s legacy.

RALPH HECKERT is the Senior Vice President and Regional Director of Capital group Private Client Services focusing on family offices, their advisors, consultants and intermediary relationships with global private banks. Before joining Capital in 2002, he spent 10 years with Bernstein Investment Research & Management. He founded the southern region for Bernstein in Palm Beach and Miami. Prior to that, Ralph spent six years with Smith Barney as a managing director in corporate ﬁnance. He also served as president of Smith Barney Pension Advisors and was a director of CIGNA alternative and private equity investments. Ralph earned an MBA and a BS from the University of Connecticut.
