From te Chair For Master Gardeners, 2015 was once again a year of great accomplishment and community service. As you read through this annual report, you will see that the numbers tell the story. From the 46,756 hours of total service to the $12,629 in monetary donations, over 300 active Master Gardeners made a real difference in a wide variety of locations in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Master Gardeners also like to learn and have fun, and our continuing education classes, garden tour, social events, and winter book club all were wonderful opportunities to do that in 2015.

You have many reasons to wear the St. Louis Master Gardener name badge with pride. Thank you for all that you do for the community and for our organization, and happy gardening in 2016!

Covenant House Missouri Healing Voluntering in te Garden Project St. Louis Count Parks

Each day Covenant House Missouri works to empower disconnected youth to design their own from homelessness to opportunity. They are an open intake agency committed to providing help and hope to young people age 16-21. Through integrated programs focused on the complex needs of the population they serve, including mental health, education, employment, and life skills, they strive to be a place of home and direction for young people who are at risk.

Master Gardener, Anne Moore, took on the task of designing a Healing Garden for Covenant House Missouri located on North Kingshighway. Anne not only designed the Healing Garden, but also arranged for MPR Contracting to donate the construction of a pondless water feature. The St. Louis Master Gardeners donated $1,400 toward the materials needed for the water feature. Anne is currently working with Covenant House volunteer Pamela Keck to find funding sources for the project. Master Gardener Tina Short assisted with the project. Memorial Garden in te Grove “I recently designed a memorial garden for the St. Louis transsexual community and worked with them

planning. The space was previously in turf grass with on plant selection, installation and maintenance a small corner planted as a (neglected) butterfly

garden. Butterflies are important symbol of transformation for the community so there was no question of replacing the butterfly garden. Instead I ordered a couple of hundred more native prairie grasses and forbs to fill out the existing plantings and tied it thematically to the rest of the design with new perennial borders. If my design works as planned, visitors will experience an uphill journey into an opening that symbolizes the personal journeys of trans folks through difficulty to oneness. You can see the garden in the Grove neighborhood at the corner of Hunt and Vandeventer.” Monte Abbott, Master Gardener Program Director - Sustainable Shaw Sustainable in St. Louis

Sout Technical High School Greenhouse The South Technical High School Greenhouse was busy in 2015 with the planting, propagating, watering, and caring for the 497 different plant varieties of annuals, perennials, vegetables, succulents, herbs and aquatics that were housed in 2015. Thirty-one Master Gardeners volunteering over 3653 hours produced over 18,000 plants from seeds, cuttings, and plugs. At the end of the weekend sale, many varieties of plants were sold out. What happened to the leftover plants? They were donated to non-profit organizations and community gardens (see list below). Where does the money go? The proceeds from the annual greenhouse sale are donated to worthy community gardens and projects around St. Louis city and county. It also provides funding for two $500 scholarships each year to South Technical High School students, for post-high school

education in horticulture or culinary arts.

“I would like to thank the St. Louis Master Gardeners for the generous gift to Missourians for Monarchs. Your gift will enhance our ability to provide milkweed and nectar plant seeds and plugs to partners in order to further our mission to create and restore monarch and other pollinator habitat across Missouri. While we have hundreds of eager

volunteers, availability of seeds and plants is fundamental to success. We sincerely appreciate the interest in this effort Master Gardeners have demonstrated.” John Hensley presents our donaton check t Forest ReLeaf

Sixt new Mastr Gardeners are certfied in 2015 . . . The St. Louis Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program is an annual training conducted in partnership between the Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) and University of Missouri Extension. In 2015, 62 trainees completed the 18-week program, and 60 were certified as St. Louis Master Gardeners. The trainees were from all walks of life and they volunteered an amazing 5,375 hours in 2015. Evening trainee, Charlie McIntosh, logged 638 hours at the International Institute Urban Farm for the highest single total.

As part of the training, students had the opportunity to hear lectures from experts in their field including University of Missouri Extension Staff, Missouri Botanical Garden Staff, and specialists in our community who own businesses or are horticultural consultants. Kemper Center’s Glenn Kopp went above and beyond when he made plants talk during his Botany lecture. There were 2 new instructors in 2015, Dale Burkhart with an extensive greenhouse background and currently a greenhouse researcher at the Danforth Plant Center taught the Propagation class. Scott Woodbury from Shaw Nature Reserve taught the Natives class.

Many thanks to the volunteer classroom assistants: Linda Anderson, Valerie Donahue, and Karen Wolfe-Kerker.

& Mastr Gardener Advanced Certficaton returns! The Advanced Master Gardener Certification was reintroduced in 2015 to encourage St. Louis Master Gardeners to continue their pursuit of knowledge. To receive Advanced Certification active Master

Gardeners must obtain 24 education credits within 3 years of completing their Advanced Certification application. Credit is earned by attending horticulture classes that are a minimum of 2 hours in length and at a preapproved site that includes the Missouri Botanical Garden and St. Louis Community College. 32 Master Gardeners completed an application to obtain Advanced Certification in 2015. Cynthia Rill, was the first to receive Advanced Certification, followed by

Paula Miceli. Congratulations!

Contnuing Educaton Classes for 2015 Master Gardeners are life-long learners! In order to keep up with the latest and greatest information related to a wide variety of gardening topics, the Master Gardener Program in St. Louis offers a monthly continuing education class – sometimes it might be a lecture, sometimes a tour, and other times it might be a hands-on demonstration. We plan these classes for different days of the week so as to accommodate the schedules of many Master Gardeners. Any ideas for future continuing education topics are always welcomed!

Anoter Successfl Mastr Gardener Garden Tour The June rainy weather forced postponement of the original tour date, and the new date, June 23rd, started off with morning showers. But our intrepid Master Gardeners persevered, arriving with umbrellas and raingear, which were quickly shed as the sun reappeared. Well over 100 Master Gardeners enjoyed their visit to the homes of Master Gardeners Jack Brier, Susan Pang, Betty Struckhoff, Judie Keane, and Sue Chaires, who volunteered their gardens for the tour. The final stop of the tour was the Schlafly Bottleworks, with a tour of the produce garden, tended by MG Brian DeSmet, followed by a social with drinks and appetizers—a perfect way to end the day!
