The Odyssey of Five Locomotives: 1835-1965 Benjamin F. G. Kline, Jr. On October 21, 1864, this item appeared in the Lancaster newspaper: "The locomotive works, operated by J. A. Norris, has been contracted for delivery of five locomotives to the Western Pacific Railroad in California." Let us examine this for more detail. First, the Western Pacific Rail- road — chartered December 13, 1862 — in November 1869, was consoli- dated with the San Francisco Bay Railroad, which was chartered Septem- ber 25, 1868. Following this consolidation, it retained the name of the Western Pacific Railroad until June 23, 1870, when it was in turn consol- idated with the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The consolidated line became a part of the Central Pacific Railroad of California. The Western Pacific Railroad and the San Francisco Bay Railroad linked Sacramento with Oakland and the San Francisco area. This provided the Central Pacific with a connection to the San Francisco area. The original Western Pacific was a line 123.45 miles in length; the consolidation with the San Francisco Bay Railroad Company added about 22.5 miles to this, giving the consolidated Western Pacific Railroad a total mileage of approximately 146 miles. A sheet issued November 6, 1868 listed all Central Pacific motive power with their specifications. Also listed separately were the ten locomo- tives which were received from the Western Pacific Railroad. The first five are of no interest to us because they were Baldwin and Mason pro- ducts. The remaining five were listed as being built by Norris of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Second, let us look at the builder. -

This joint conference of the Midwest Archaeological Conference and the Southeastern Archaeological Conference marks the second time that these two prestigious organizations have joined together. The first was ten years ago in Lexington, Kentucky and from all accounts a tremendous success. Having the two groups meet in St. Louis is a first for both groups in the 50 years that the Midwest Conference has been in existence and the 61 years that the Southeastern Archaeological Conference has met since its inaugural meeting in 1938. St. Louis hosted the first Midwestern Conference on Archaeology sponsored by the National Research Council’s Committee on State Archaeological Survey 75 years ago. Parts of the conference were broadcast across the airwaves of KMOX radio, thus reaching a larger audience. Since then St. Louis has been host to two Society for American Archaeology conferences in 1976 and 1993 as well as the Society for Historical Archaeology’s conference in 2004. When we proposed this joint conference three years ago we felt it would serve to again bring people together throughout most of the mid-continent. -

The Trainmaster The Official Publication of the Pacific Northwest Chapter October 2012 National Railway Historical Society Portland, Oregon The Oregon Rail Heritage Center Opens Photo by Arlen Sheldrake October 2012 Pacific Northwest Chapter National Railway Historical Society The Trainmaster Page 1 Photos by Trent Stetz Over 160 enthusiastic ORHF volunteers welcomed and hosted over 6,300 excited guests (with 3,622 on Saturday 22nd and 2,737 on Sunday 23rd) at the opening weekend of the Oregon Rail Heritage Center near the new Portland Streetcar Central Loop extension stop at OMSI. Oregon rail history was brought alive by the three historic steam locomotives, the 1941 Southern Pacific 4449, the 1938 Spokane, Portland and Seattle 700, and the 1905 Oregon Rail and Navigation 197 which were all on display in their new engine house accompanied on site by two diesel locomotives, a PA-1 and RSD-5, and six heritage passenger cars outside. The 4449 was steamed up with its head poked out the engine house door and gave an occasional toot to the delight of the attendees. The weekend visitors got to view the cabs of both 4449 and 700. A very extensive Lego exhibit included a model of the Portland Customs house as well as Portland Union Station. The Operation Lifesaver trailer was on hand to educate the guests. The kids enjoyed a Chuggington Station play area. Tours were given of three heritage passenger cars including the 1941 SP "James J. Gilmore" parlor/lounge round end observation, the 1954 SP "Gordon Zimmerman" Baggage Car, and the 1950 SP&S Mount Hood Sleeper-Lounge Car. -

cta 2016 Historical Calendar cta 2016 January Chicago Motor Coach Company (CMC) bus #434, manufactured by the Ford Motor Company, was part of a fleet of buses operated by the Chicago Motor Coach Company, one of the predecessor transit companies that were eventually assimilated into the Chicago Transit Authority. The CMC originally operated buses exclusively on the various park boulevards in Chicago, and became known by the marketing slogan, “The Boulevard Route.” Later, service was expanded to operate on some regular streets not served by the Chicago Surface Lines, particularly on the fringes of the city. Chicagoans truly wanted a unified transit system, and it was for this reason that the Chicago Transit Authority was established by charter in 1945. The CMC was not one of the initial properties purchased that made up CTA’s inaugural services on October 1, 1947; however, it was bought by CTA in 1952.
