CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION, the CULTURE of MANGA Christiana Constantopoulou Manga and Anime
French Journal For Media Research – n° 6/2016 – ISSN 2264-4733 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTEMPORARY COMMUNICATION, THE CULTURE OF MANGA Christiana Constantopoulou Professeure de Sociologie de la Communication Université Panteion, Athènes - Grèce Manga and Anime The popularity of anime and manga has helped westerners gain a broader understanding of Japanese culture. Manga is a generic term for all graphic novels and comic books originally published in Japan. Manga is read either in serialized comic books, monthly magazines, or graphic novels. All formats are available in English translation, graphic novels, however, are the most common and can be found in both major bookstore chains and local comic shops. The graphic novels are usually presented in "manga-style," meaning a right-to-left format. The word Manga, when translated directly, means “whimsical drawings”. Manga are typically 'comic books' as the West understands them; rather, they represent pieces of Japanese culture and history. The 'manga' style has an extensive history, beginning sometime in the 10th century; scrolls from that period depict animals as part of the 'upper class', behaving as a typical human would in similar situations. Such scrolls would go on to be known as the Chōjū giga or “The Animal Scrolls”. Scrolls found later on in the 12th century would depict images of religion such as the Gaki Zoshi (Hungry Ghost Scrolls) and the Jigoku zoshi (Hell Scrolls). While both dealt with various aspects of religion, unlike “The Animal Scrolls”, these provided a more instructive viewpoint, rather than a comedic style. Manga are more significant, culturally, than Western comic books (though many fill the same role). -

She may look innocent, but walks softly and carries a big gun. Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers): An international terrorist force is knocking off Japanese police officers, thirty high-level officials to be precise. Because of this, the head of Division 4, Mr. Hata, has sought out the agency’s former top field agent, Kyoji Kido. Kido used to be directly involved with terrorist investigations but transferred to the juvenile crimes department after the terrorist group known as ALICE killed his sister. Initially, Kido refuses to return but quickly changes his mind when Mr. Hata presents evidence that links ALICE to the recent police killings. Mr. Hata is glad to have Kido back, but there is just one caveat to his return; Kido has to take on a new partner. Normally a new partner wouldn’t be a problem, but Kido’s new partner is not only a rookie but she’s also only fourteen years old. -

The Female Gaze in Contemporary Japanese Literature Abstract The female gaze can be used by writers and readers to look at narratives from a perspective that sees women as subjects instead of objects. Applying a female gaze to discourses that have traditionally been male-dominated opens new avenues of interpretation that are empowering from a feminist perspective. In this dissertation, I use the murder mystery novels of the bestselling female author Kirino Natsuo and the graphic novels of a prolific four-woman artistic collective called CLAMP to demonstrate how writers are capable of applying a female gaze to the themes of their work and how readers can and have read their work from the perspectives allowed by a female gaze. Kirino Natsuo presents a female perspective on such issues as prostitution, marriage, and equal employment laws in her novels, which are often based on sensationalist news stories. Meanwhile, CLAMP challenges the discourses surrounding the production and consumption of fictional women, especially the young female characters, or shojo, that have become iconic in Japanese popular culture. -
CHAPTER THIRTY Anime's Situated Posthumanism: Representation, Mediality, Performance
CHAPTER THIRTY Anime’s Situated Posthumanism: Representation, Mediality, Performance JAQUELINE BERNDT Anime, a popular media form from Japan, has been closely tied to posthuman critical discourse in Europe and North America. Designating primarily genre fiction appearing in cel animation, the name itself—an abbreviation of the English loanword animēshon—took roots in vernacular Japanese in the 1970s (cf. Berndt 2018). Roughly two decades later it began to enter the global lexicon. But contrary to the popular global definition—“Animation Made in Japan”—in Japanese discourse, anime is specified with regard to medium as cel, or cel-look, animation, serialized narratives produced on tight budgets and consequently rendered to the greatest possible extend in so-called limited rather than full animation;1 with regard to media, that is, institutions and practices of production, distribution, and consumption, as closely tied to television and manga (i.e., magazine-based printed comics). With manga, the traditional supplier of stories to be adapted, anime shares the commercial orientation, the format of serial narratives, the high degree of conventionality, and usually also the fandom. As a matter of fact, not all “anime” are TV series or related franchise movies, but categorizing these as anime in the same breath as animated feature films made for theatrical release by renowned director-auteurs (such as Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii) may become problematic Copyright © 2020. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc. All rights reserved. Publishing Plc. All © 2020. Bloomsbury Copyright beyond the narrow confines of medium specificity. Turning to anime, and manga, in search of contributions to, for example, posthumanism calls for a consideration of media affordances which change according to time, place, and audiences. -
