  • Emily of Emerald Hill: a Reaffirmation of Peranakan Culture
Asian Visual and Performing Arts, Part II Education About ASIA online supplement Emily of Emerald Hill: A Reaffirmation of Peranakan Culture By Coonoor Kripalani tella Kon’s Emily of Emerald Hill is one of Singa- pore’s most enduring plays. Written in English and interspersed with Singlish (colloquially spoken- English) expressions, this one-woman play recounts Emily’s life in the 1950s. Through her memories, the audience learns about the life, culture, and traditions of Sthe Peranakans, a group of overseas Chinese long-resident in Penang and Malacca, who adopted Malay language and culture. Known variously as Babas, Straits Chinese, Melaka Men, and Peranakans, this community made enormous contributions to economic and cultural life in the regions of Southeast Asia they inhabited. The visibility and dominance of this community lend a special character to the Chinese community of Singapore. The play is set in a traditional Peranakan mansion, based on Oberon, the home of the author’s grandparents. Emily’s memories conjure up the grand days of the patriarch, when the extended family lived under the same roof, until the time she is left as the sole occupant of the family home. The play gives the audience insights into the unique culture of the Peranakans in Singapore—their dress, food, lifestyle, family dynamics, and relationships. Performed numerous times both in Singapore and over- seas, Emily has become an icon of Singapore and a cultural signifier of the island state. In homage to this piece of work, the Peranakan Museum (PM) of Singapore held an exhibi- tion of the play and its various stagings, sets, and scripts.1 Lauding this effort, Margaret Chan, the first actor in Singa- pore to reprise the role of Emily, said, “Curating theatre is novel, and the Peranakan Museum (and so the Asian Civili- sations Museum) should indeed be congratulated for this vi- The Peranakan Museum held a special exhibition Emily of Emerald Hill: Singa- sion, which goes beyond the material culture associated with porean Identity on Stage, written in 1982 by Stella Kon.

  • Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences
FROM PRINT TO SCREEN: ASIAN AMERICAN ROMANTIC COMEDIES AND SOCIOPOLITICAL INFLUENCES Karena S. Yu TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 2019 ______________________________ Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. Department of Radio-Television-Film Supervising Professor ______________________________ Chiu-Mi Lai, Ph.D. Department of Asian Studies Second Reader Abstract Author: Karena S. Yu Title: From Print to Screen: Asian American Romantic Comedies and Sociopolitical Influences Supervisor: Madhavi Mallapragada, Ph.D. In this thesis, I examine how sociopolitical contexts and production cultures have affected how original Asian American narrative texts have been adapted into mainstream romantic comedies. I begin by defining several terms used throughout my thesis: race, ethnicity, Asian American, and humor/comedy. Then, I give a history of Asian American media portrayals, as these earlier images have profoundly affected the ways in which Asian Americans are seen in media today. Finally, I compare the adaptation of humor in two case studies, Flower Drum Song (1961) which was created by Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Crazy Rich Asians (2018) which was directed by Jon M. Chu. From this analysis, I argue that both seek to undercut the perpetual foreigner myth, but the difference in sociocultural incentives and control of production have resulted in more nuanced portrayals of some Asian Americans in the latter case. However, its tendency to push towards the mainstream has limited its ability to challenge stereotyped representations, and it continues to privilege an Americentric perspective. 2 Acknowledgements I owe this thesis to the support and love of many people. To Dr. Mallapragada, thank you for helping me shape my topic through both your class and our meetings.

THE COMPARISON OF PUBLIC SERVICE ADVERTISING STYLE BETWEEN MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE: A PRELIMINARY RESEARCH Tan Yin Yin Julia1, Yohan Kurniawan2, SitiBahirahBinti Saidi3 1Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Kota Bharu, Malaysia, julia@umk.edu.my 2Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Kota Bharu, Malaysia, yohan@umk.edu.my 3Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Kota Bharu, Malaysia, bahirah@umk.edu.my Abstract:Advertisement is one important tool in the process of selling a product or recruitment process. Civil service is one of the sectors that need to use advertisement to get the attention of the public. This research aimed to compare the form of a poster advertisement for the recruitment of police personnel between Malaysia and Singapore. This study used observation technique for collecting data. Data were gathered at LRT station, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and MRT stations, Singapore; where posters were analyzed to compare to advertising and motivation theory. Result shows that the Singapore Police recruitment advertising has a clearer and better message than Malaysia‟s. This is due to urgent needs of police personnel and also because it is extremely tough to attract people to join the police force in Singapore. Therefore, the Singapore Police produced advertisements that interest teenagers and young people to participate in the Singapore Police Force. Keywords:Police job advertisement interesting and creative, the urgent needs of the police force, the ads that appeal to young people. 1. Introduction The American Marketing Association (AMA), which represents marketing professionals in the United States and Canada, defines marketingas the process of planning and executing the conception, pricing, promotion, and distribution of ideas, goods, and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational objectives.Effective marketing requires that managers recognize the interdependence of such activities as sales and promotion and how they can be combined to develop a marketing program (Belch & Belch, 1984).
