Though the recent theodicy literature has often displayed suspicion toward the inclusion of aesthetic criteria, I will argue that theological aesthetics can enrich the theodicy discourse and therefore should be used as a resource in responding to the problem of evil. In Part I, I will attempt to lay a foundation for an aesthetically informed theodicy by examining some of the philosophical frameworks that lie behind Christian theodicy, and seeking to illuminate a framework that allows theological aesthetics to helpfully contribute to the task of theodicy. By offering a preliminary account of theological aesthetics, I will aim to further lay a foundation for how the two areas of theology can interact. In Part II, I will look at three distinct aesthetic motifs or “themes” as they are developed by three different theodicists (one ancient and two contemporary): Augustine, Wendy Farley, and Marilyn McCord Adams. Each of the themes developed by these theodicists offers a different example of how aesthetics can reorient and enrich our perspective on theodicy. Musical Prelude: Mozart and the Shattenseite What role does the artist play in the world of theology? What can art show us about God’s goodness in the midst of evil? In the small print of Church Dogmatics III, 3 Karl Barth takes time to focus on a part of this larger query, in reflecting on the role of Mozart in theology. His question: Why is it possible to hold that Mozart has a place in theology, especially in the doctrine of creation and also in eschatology, although he was not a father of the Church, does not seem to have been a particularly active Christian, and was a Roman Catholic, apparently leading what might appear to us a rather frivolous existence when not occupied with his work?1 Barth’s answer to his own question is this, In the face of the problem of theodicy [the Lisbon earthquake], Mozart had the peace of God which far transcends all the critical or speculative reason that praises and reproves… He heard, and causes those who have ears to hear, even to-day, what we shall not see until the end of time - the whole context of providence.2 Barth’s appraisal of Mozart’s music here is striking. Through Mozart, Barth proclaims, those with ears to hear can get an auditory sense of God’s providential master plan. If this were so, if we could hear in Mozart God’s providence, even in the midst of evil, then this would indeed give Mozart a very prominent place within theology! Given this, it is worth looking a little more closely at Barth and Mozart, to hear what both are ‘saying’. First we must ask: What is the problem of theodicy Mozart faced, and what peace does Mozart pass on to us as we face it as well? 1 Karl Barth, Church Dogmatics, vol III, 3, The Doctrine of Creation, trans. Ehrlich (Edinburgh: T & T Clark, 1960), 297-8. 2 Ibid., 298. 6 The virtual destruction of Lisbon in 1755 was no mere natural cataclysm, but a catastrophe of–as they say–biblical proportions. Lisbon first shook with the earthquake, then flooded with a tsunami, then burned in a raging fire. That so many died in church, celebrating All Saint’s Day mass, further added to the confusion about the significance of the event. The Lisbon earthquake was the great disaster to which minds as diverse as Rousseau, Kant, and Voltaire turned their attention. As Susan Neiman writes, “The eighteenth century used the word Lisbon much as we use the word Auschwitz today.”3 Naturally, philosophers found different meanings in the event. Rousseau, characteristically emphasizing the goodness of uncorrupted nature, suggested, in a letter to Voltaire, that nature herself is not to blame for the catastrophe but rather the close proximity in which the citizens were living.4 Kant, uncharacteristically still in the thrall of rationalism, attempted a justification of earthquakes fitting with Leibniz’s optimism.5 Standing apart from both thinkers, Voltaire rejected any attempt to see the good in Lisbon’s destruction. Each resolved the problem by fitting the destruction of Lisbon into what they believed about the world, though with far different conclusions. It was into this philosophical world - a world dominated by ‘Lisbon’ - that Mozart was born in 1756.

    HOLY BEAUTY A Reformed Perspective on Aesthetics within a World of Unjust Ugliness John W. de Gruchy Robert Selby Taylor Professor of Christian Studies Director of the Graduate School in Humanities University of Cape Town Much of my theological endeavour over the years has focussed on the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. During the past decade my focus has shifted to the relationship between Christianity and democratic transformation and, more recently to theological aesthetics and to the role of art in transformation. This latter interest has clearly not meant a lessening of concern for theological engagement with public life. That remains constant both out of the conviction that theology and ethics cannot be separated, and the fact that the struggle against the legacy of apartheid and injustice more generally remains. The transition to democracy requires an ongoing struggle for social transformation. My interest in theological aesthetics, then, is not an opting out of a commitment for social justice but an attempt to address a set of issues that have previously been neglected by those of us who were engaged as theologians in the struggle against apartheid. To emphasise this point let me say that I wrote these words in the midst of a workshop of `Christianity, art and healing’ where the focus was on the new holocaust facing sub-Saharan Africa, the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Nadine Gordimer, the celebrated South African novelist, has noted that art is `at the heart of liberation.’1 The struggle against apartheid certainly produced an artistic creativity of a remarkable kind and intensity.2 It is remarkable, then, that theologians engaged in the struggle did not take this into account in doing theology.

    1 Theodicy: An Overview Introduction All of us struggle at one time or another in life with why evil happens to someone, either ourselves, our family, our friends, our nation, or perhaps some particularly disturbing instance in the news—a child raped, a school shooting, genocide in another country, a terrorist bombing. The following material is meant to give an overview of the discussion of this issue as it takes place in several circles, especially that of the Christian church. I. The Problem of Evil Defined Three terms, "the problem of evil," "theodicy," and "defense" are important to our discussion. The first two are often used as synonyms, but strictly speaking the problem of evil is the larger issue of which theodicy is a subset because one can have a secular problem of evil. Evil is understood as a problem when we seek to explain why it exists (Unde malum?) and what its relationship is to the world as a whole. Indeed, something might be considered evil when it calls into question our basic trust in the order and structure of our world. Peter Berger in particular has argued that explanations of evil are necessary for social structures to stay themselves against chaotic forces. It follows, then, that such an explanation has an impact on the whole person. As David Blumenthal observes, a good theodicy is one that has three characteristics: 1. "[I]t should leave one with one’s sense of reality intact." (It tells the truth about reality.) 2. "[I]t should leave one empowered within the intellectual-moral system in which one lives." (Namely, it should not deny God’s basic power or goodness.) 3.

The metaphysics of experience is about the experiences of transcendence and beautiful thinking that take place in the intermediate world. In the article “The Intermediate World,” this subject is introduced through a discussion of thoughts and concepts formulated by Paul Klee (Zwischenwelt), Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (beautiful thinking), Aristotle (phantasia), Immanuel Kant (expanded thinking), Mark C. Taylor (imagination), and Eugenio Trías (the limit). The text depicts the intermediate world as the level of experience at which the understanding does not yet distinguish between subject and object. The intermediate world is thus not a realm between human and world, nor is it something outside the world we know. The intermediate world is rather the present world in its most original state: the ‘place’ where we find the source of all experience and cognition, a source called ‘basic experience’ characterized by sensation, faith, and comprehension. In this realm, imagination is active and takes the form of an objective force rather than a subjective mental power. Imagination opens mind and world, thus allowing not-yet- actualized possibilities to become perceivable. The universe (or parts of it) exhibit property X 2. Property X is usually (if not always) brought about by the purposive actions of those who created objects for them to be X. 3. The cases mentioned in Premise 1 are not explained (or fully explained) by human action 4. Therefore: The universe is (likely) the product of a purposive agent who created it to be X, namely God. The variety of teleological arguments is as broad as substitution instances for X. The standard substitutions have been features of the universe (or it all) fine-tuned for life, or the fact of moral action. One further substitution has been beauty. Thus, arguments from beauty. A truism about teleological arguments is that they have evil twins.

Yet, what these philosophers say with such consistency about revelation stands in stark contrast with the claims of the Christian East, which are equally consistent from the second century through the fourteenth century. In this essay, I will compare the modern discussion of special revelation from Thomas Hobbes through Johann Fichte with the Eastern Christian discussion from Irenaeus through Gregory Palamas. As we will see, there are noteworthy differences between the two trajectories, differences I will suggest merit careful consideration from philosophers of religion.
