  • Westmoreland Cleanways and Recycling Recycling
WESTMORELAND CLEANWAYS AND RECYCLING RECYCLING GUIDE Updated as of 8/27/15 INTRODUCTION Westmoreland Cleanways’ recycling landscape is constantly evolving. Opportunities exist now for recycling a wide range of materials that did not exist just a few years ago. Some of the factors affecting recycling are: Single Stream Recycling became widely available to the Westmoreland County market in 2007. The availability of single stream processing has allowed haulers to upgrade municipal curbside recycling programs from accepting just a few items to accepting the full single stream range of recyclables. Be sure to check your municipality’s program to see if curbside single stream is available to you. Passage of Act 108 of 2010, the Covered Device Recycling Act (applies to computers and television) and the proper disposal of other e-waste as a growing environmental danger. New companies are opening every day to address the need for proper e-waste disposal. Many large electronics retailers are recognizing their role in ensuring proper disposal of e-waste and sponsor in-house collections, regardless of where the items were originally purchased. Much has been made of the improper disposal of e-waste, with cargo shipments of waste going to underdeveloped nations where the toxic byproducts end up in water systems and worse. Westmoreland Cleanways qualifies each vendor it endorses to be sure the e-waste is recycled or disposed in an environmentally secure manner. The economy of recycling: Recycling is as much a business decision as it is environmental. Source reduction is becoming a preferred way of dealing with waste and reducing cost.

  • Resource Directory
Resource Directory Green building projects, services and products in Western Pennsylvania Since 1993, Green Building Alliance (GBA) has educated local professionals about, worked directly with, advocated for, and promoted green buildings and green building products in Western Pennsylvania. As a national pioneer, GBA continues to lead change in our region by advancing economic prosperity and human well-being through the greening of the built environment. Buildings in the United States account for over 70% of the country’s electricity consumption, nearly 40% of its energy use and close to 40% of all its greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Energy Information Administration. Compared to standard buildings, green buildings have been shown by the U.S. General Services Administration to lower maintenance costs by over 10%, reduce energy use more than 25%, lower greenhouse gas emissions by 33% and signifi cantly increase occupant satisfaction. Since the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans spend nearly 90% of their time inside buildings, improvements within the building industry can have a vast impact. This is why GBA continually seeks to further its role as a nonprofi t catalyst for environmentally sound building practices, materials and healthy indoor environments. This Resource Directory celebrates local green building projects, services, professionals and products – and will hopefully serve as both an inspiration and resource as you incorporate green principles into your next building related project, career or venture.
