MESSAGE FROM RABBI BERKMAN The Last Driving Lesson

This is the last driving lesson. The very last. Over certain moments in life I can wax nostalgic; the last Chumash ceremony, the last bar mitzvah, the last lile league game. Over the last driving lesson, I will rejoice. When it comes to teaching our kids to drive, most parents I know pracce a certain kind of fatalist differenaon of roles. In our family, it is understood that it is my job to possibly take one for the team. When we, the designated parents, sele into the passenger side seat of the family car, our budding drivers behind the wheel, our feet reaching in vain for the brake pedal, we suspend our insnct for self preservaon and place our lives in the very capable hands of our eager sixteen year‐olds whose diapers, only a few years ago, we were changing.

Maybe it’s exactly because this is the last driving lesson that I’ve been thinking in a more general way about the life lessons to be learned from a skillful merge, a cauous turn and the art of parallel parking.

Look across at the flow of cars as you drive down the entrance ramp. Note the speed of the traffic, how close together the cars are to one another. Look for an opening but keep your eyes on the driver in front of you as well. These are but just a few of the many calculaons needed in order to blend in with highway speed traffic. And, as it turns out, these are the same skills required in negoang a smooth entrance into adulthood. Take your me as you slowly build your speed. Don’t try to race ahead of yourself or others. Be measured and deliberate as you wexplore ne experiences. Don’t jump across the broken white lines into lanes where you don’t belong ‐ unl you’re ready. Spend a lot of me observing others around you and remember that opportunies in your mirror may be closer than they appear.

“In making your turn,” I hear myself say, “stay on the brake unl you’re halfway through the maneuver. Then, accelerate as you straighten the wheel. Don’t go too slow and don’t overshoot the mark.” So it is as you make the transion into adult life, I say to my daughter – in my mind. You need to remember that there are people who count on you to be predictable. Not only in going around corners but predictable as a friend, one day as a partner, as a mother. Your life will be full of twists and turns. Take them steady. If you are fluid in your dacons an in your emoons, hand over hand, you’ll always be pointed in the right direcon.

Finally, why do they make you parallel park for your driving test? It just seems like there are so many other more crical lessons whose consequences are the difference between life and death. However, the importance of knowing how to parallel park is all about scking up for yourself while learning to be considerate of others. When you see that open space into which you just might be able to squeeze your midsize SUV, you need to balance your need to park with the needs of the drivers behind you. You will block them for as long as it takes you to angle your way into that spot so you beer learn how to do it quickly and efficiently. Adult life is all about sharing the road. Edge your way in so that you don’t get le behind. But, always do it with kindness and consideraon. Good luck, new driver.

B’Yididut, David

ECC EVENTS by Jackie Binstock, Director

To tell or not to tell, that is the queson. From Purim through Passover, our teachers are ptoeing through the minefields of stories fraught with evil intenons and horrible punishments. Haman sends out decrees to murder every Jew in the empire. And then he and his 10 sons are hung from the gallows themselves. The Jews are allowed to defend themselves and kill thousands of Persians who were preparing to kill them first. Pharaoh enslaves the Jewish people, tries to murder every Jewish male baby, and is afflicted with 10 punishments that ascend in horror, with the culminaon being the death of every first born. And if that’s not bad enough, Pharaoh and his army pursue the Jews to the edge of the Red Sea, and are all subsequently drowned, with their horses and chariots! We make light of it as adults. There is a joket tha every Jewish holiday is the same – they threatened to kill us, we survived, let’s eat! But to a small child, this is very serious business, especially since children have such a fine line between fantasy and reality.

Some schools choose not to tell the story at all, and just teach the rituals and songs around it. To me, that makes no sense. It gives no context or reason for celebrang any given holiday. It may as well be a random Tuesday, like when we have pajama day or beach day. Without context, the meaning of the holiday is lost. So in the ECC, we tell an abridged and/or revised version of the story. That means Haman wanted to hurt or send away the Jewish people. There is no menon of Pharaoh’s edict or the slaying of the first born. We tailor it to the developmental agee of th children – the 2’s are going to get a very different version than the 4’s – and to the sensibilies and character of each classroom. If a child is afraid of animals, we are certainly not going to discuss the plague of wild beasts! Most of the me, with the sensivity of our teachers and their knowledge of child development and each child individually, the children end up dealing with the “backstory” very well. Aer all, there is a good guy (or guys), a bad guy and his henchman, and in the end, good (and God) triumphs over evil. It’s the same formula used in fairy tales, and kids understand that. From that context, we now have a basis for the rituals that go with the story, and it makes sense. Who would possibly eat maror (bier herbs) voluntarily if there was no reason to???

Children are vulnerable, no queson. But they are also stronger and smarter than we give them credit for. Given a framework that makes sense to them, they can revel in the stories that make up our heritage.

Yes it is winter but spring and golf are just around the corner. Aer a five year hiatus, we are bringing back this popular event. In the past, the oung has raised over $500,000 for the synagogue. We want to connue this legacy so here is how you can help.

Please look at all of the sponsorships. There are many. Talk with your colleagues or business owner. See if they would be willing to help sponsor a hole or take a golf sponsorship. Maybe they would even sponsor lunch or dinner?

This year we will have prizes efor a hol ‐in‐one that could include a car, trips, golf packages and more. We will also have the $15,000 hole‐in‐one shootout at the end of the oung. Even if no one scores a hole‐in‐one, you could sll win $1,000, $500, or $250. Not bad for just one shot.

We will also have a 50/50 raffle and will sell 100 boxes similar to the super bowl. Just pick a box and fill in your name and you are in. You could even win a trip for 2 for 4 days and three nights to Las Vegas or Puerto Rico. All you need to do is by a raffle cket.

There will be a silent aucon where you can purchase sports memorabilia or other pictures. If you have suggesons for these items let us know.

If you do not play golf, no worries, come for dinner and cocktails. We will have an open bar, pass rounds, and surprises.

The money we raise will help fund programs for our Hebrew School and our Nursery School. The money raised will be earmarked specifically for these two programs. Please join us. You will feel beer and so will NCJC.

Thank you to everyone who came out to parcipate and support our Women on the Bimah event, in honor of Internaonal Women's Day. And a very special thank you to Gabrielle Haber, Jenn Litvak, Sheila Gersh and Maureen Rowin for organizing such a beauful annual event. It was truly inspiring!

In celebraon of Purim, we also hosted a very successful, and well‐aended Hamantaschen Bake. Thank you so much to Jennifer Javer and Jacklyn Goldberg for organizing such a fun baking event for our NCJC children in such a short amount of me. We had over 45 children in aendance! Everyone especially enjoyed the interacve demonstraon on how to make the dough from scratch. Every child was able to roll out their own dough, fill them with yummy toppings, shape them into triangles, and take them home to bake! Special thanks to Devorah Berman, Melanie Marchfeld and Dara Kroll for coming in early to set‐up and staying late to clean‐up!

Our next Sisterhood Meng will be held on Monday, 4/20 in the Social Hall. We have Execuve Board elecons coming up quickly for the upcoming year. Please join us at the meeng if you are interested in hearing more about joining our Sisterhood Board.

We would also love to hear any ideas for programs that you have an interest in running.
