Elements of the caenogastropod fauna from Pliocene strata exposed at Kallo, province of Oost-Vlaanderen (Belgium), are described and illustrated, and their stratigraphical and geographical occurrence discussed. Ten species not recorded previously from the Pliocene Turritella Brakman, 1937, of Belgium are described, viz. Tenagodus obtusus (Schumacher, 1817) s. lat., (Haustator) vanderfeeni Littorina (Melaraphe) gibbosa Etheridge & Bell, 1893, Onoba aff. millettii (Etheridge & Bell, 1893), Onoba semicostata (Montagu, 1803), Rissoa (Turboella) curticostata Wood, 1848, Obtusella intersecta (Wood, 1856), Skeneopsis planorbis (Fabricius, 1780), Caecum glabrum (Montagu, 1803) and Ceratia proxima (Forbes & Hanley, 1850). Alvania (A.) simonsi and Peringiella crassilabris are described as new. Another species previously unknown from the Belgian Pliocene, Alvania (A.) whitleyi (Bell, 1898), is recorded from Antwerp-Oorderen. The family is char- acterised by the discoidal shell with spiral keels or cords, and a wide umbilicus. -

A total of 155 species of marine Gastropoda (Mollusca) are known in the Black Sea coast of Turkey. However, the Prosobranch gastropod Tornus subcarinatus (Montagu, 1803) is recorded for the first time from the central Black Sea of Turkey. Previous records of the species were confined to the southern part of the Turkey, it is occurrence at Turkish coast of the Black Sea extends its distribution range to the Black Sea continued to Turkish coastal waters of Black Sea. Recent molluscan types currently housed in the Malacology Section of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County are listed herein. Each type lot entry includes original species/subspecies name, original genus, author, original citation, type status, LACM number, number of specimens and preservation, type locality or collection locality, collector [if known], date collected [if known], and current taxonomic status if different from original description. INTRODUCTION This catalog is published in accordance with Recommendation 72F.4 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (Ride & others, 2000:79). This listing includes all molluscan type material currently housed at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and supercedes the type listing of Sphon (1971). To date 1922 molluscan type lots (71,000+ specimens) are reported for 1147 species and 99 subspecies, which includes 589 holotypes, 1277 paratype lots, 10 lectotypes, 13 paralectotype lots, 29 syntype lots, 3 neotypes, and 2 neotype lots in 550+ references. Type categories listed include: Holotype (in red), paratype(s) (in blue), syntype(s) (in orange), lectotype (in pink), paralectotype(s) (in aqua), and neotype and/or neotype lots (in brown) as defined by Ride & others (2000). Because the term cotype is not recognized by the ICZN, lots originally designated as cotype(s) (in green) by original specimen labels are now referred to as syntype(s). -

The biology of most vitrinellid species remains poorly understood. In this study, we report that Circulus cinguliferus (A. Adams, 1850) (Vitrinellidae), distributed widely in the warm shallow waters of the Pacific, inhabit crustacean burrows, including those of the mud shrimp Neaxius acanthus (Strahlaxiidae) and snapping shrimp Alpheus rapax (Alpheidae), in the intertidal and subtidal flats of the Okinawa Islands, southern Japan. They exhibited highly clumped distribution among the host burrows, suggesting that they are attracted by conspecifics. Although the biology of most Circulus species remains unknown, Circulus texanus (D. R. Moore, 1965) is known to inhabit stomatopod burrows in the western Atlantic. Our findings suggest that such a commensal habit may be more wide- spread in this genus than previously thought. The study system was the soft-substrate benthoscape of the area of the Kalloni solar saltworks (Lesvos Island, Greece). Specifically, the study area extended from the infralittoral zone of the inner Kalloni Gulf (marine habitat) to the bottoms of the first two evaporation ponds of the Kalloni solar saltworks (lagoonal habitat). Bottom sediment samples (3 replicates) were collected with a Van Veen grab sampler (0.1 m2 ) at four sampling sites, along a 1.5 km long line transect that spanned the marine - lagoonal environmental transition. A total of four surveys were carried out seasonally in 2004. A total of 39,345 molluscan individuals were sorted out of the sediment samples and were identified to 71 species, belonging to the Gastropoda (36), Bivalvia (34) and Scaphopoda (1) classes. -

A total of 653 organisms representing 120 species of molluscs were collected, of which 14 (11%) are new records for the Mexican Caribbean. The new records presented herein correspond to: 11 gastropods belonging to 11 different families, 2 bivalves from 2 different orders, and 1 polyplacophoran. -

Wien, Serie A 113 373–509 Wien, Mai 2011 Gastropods and their habitats from the northern Red Sea (Egypt: Safaga) Part 2: Caenogastropoda: Sorbeoconcha and Littorinimorpha By Ronald JANSSEN , Martin ZUSCHIN and Christian BAAL (With 28 plates, 7 figures and 4 tables) Manuscript submitted on January 18th 2011, the revised manuscript on February 18th 2011 Abstract Almost 5,900 shells from a highly structured, coral-dominated coastal area of approximately 75 km2 were studied and yielded 112 species of Sorbeoconcha and Littorinimorpha as well as one Vetigastropoda (in supplement to part 1). All species are figured and the taxonomy of many species is discussed in detail. Twelve species are recorded for the Red Sea for the first time. The high spe- cies richness was obtained from 119 quantitative and qualitative samples, which covered a broad range of soft and hard substrates in water depths from the intertidal down to 50 m. At all system- atic levels (superfamilies, families, genera, species) well more than two third of the taxa belong to the Littorinimorpha, although 59 % of the studied shells are Sorbeoconcha. The Cerithioidea and Rissooidea together make up more than three quarters of the shells and also have the highest spe- cies- and genus richness. High diversity is also present in the Tonnoidea, Stromboidea, Naticoidea, Cypraeoidea and Vanikoroidea, which together, however, make up only 10 % of the studied shells. The majority of species was found in quantitative bulk samples from soft substrates. The highest species richness occurred in sandy, coral-associated sediments.
