The adhesive is typically protected by a release liner which is removed and discarded at the time of installation. On a single-coated adhesive product the face stock Face Stock typically performs a unique function. A good Adhesive example is the MACtac® Black Grit safety Liner products. Double-Coated Double-coated adhesive products consist of a fairly thin, flexible carrier membrane that is coated on both sides with a pressure sensitive adhesive. Double-coated adhesives are designed to bond two substrates either similar or dissimilar in nature together. Double-coated adhesive Adhesive constructions are highly customizable to meet Carrier end user requirements. The two adhesive Adhesive Liner layers can be the same or different adhesives. The proper selection will provide the correct gap filling and will ensure the optimum adhesive contact with each substrate. MACtac double-coated adhesive products are ideal for gasket bonding, insulation materials, bonding electronic components, attaching molding, extruded plastic parts and more. Free Film Free film adhesive products consist of a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive on a release liner without a carrier membrane. The lack of a carrier allows the adhesive to be more extensible and conformable. Free film adhesives are designed to bond two substrates either similar or dissimilar in nature together. MACtac free film adhesive products are Adhesive ideal for mounting nameplates, second surface Liner printed signs or labels, and other decorative substrates. pg. 4 email: [email protected] www. MACtac.com/technical Specialty Products Technical Carrier Membranes A carrier membrane can be any relatively thin, flexible material such as paper, film or foam. The term “carrier” usually refers to material that has been coated on both sides with adhesive. A carrier’s primary function is to carry the adhesive but a carrier also provides reinforcing strength, gap filling and dimensional stability to the product. Paper Carriers Paper carrier membranes are composed of cellulose fibers and differ from one another by weight, degree of chemical treatment, thickness and color. Based on the thickness they provide paper carriers are a sound economical choice. Film Carriers Film carrier membranes are composed of various forms of thin plastic such as polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyvinylchloride. The films differ by thickness, chemical resistance, barrier properties, tensile strength, temperature resistance, and color. An added benefit of a film carrier is it is water resistant. Polyester (PET) Films: PET film carriers are clear films that offer high tensile strength and can be used with most adhesive technologies. PET films also provide good barrier properties to most migratory chemicals. Polypropylene (PP) Films: PP film carriers are available in oriented and non-oriented versions. Most manufactures use clear PP films but white and colored films are also available. Both oriented and non-oriented films are water resistant and neither provides sufficient barrier properties for migratory chemicals. Polyethylene (PE) Films: Polyethylene (PE) Films: PE films are available in oriented and non-oriented versions. Most manufactures use clear PE films but white and colored films are also available. Both oriented and non-oriented films are water resistant and neither provides sufficient barrier properties for migratory chemicals. PE films are similar to PP films but are more easily stretched and relatively inexpensive. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Films: PVC films are available in hard (semi-rigid) and soft formulations. Hard PVC is less conformable and has a higher tensile strength so it is not right for all applications. However, it is also less plasticized and offers better adhesive compatibility. Soft PVC is more conformable but because of the plasticizers prevents the use of certain adhesives. PVC films are available in clear, white, and colored versions. Foam Carriers Foam carrier membranes are composed of various forms of plastic such as polyethylene, polyvinylchloride, urethane, and neoprene. Foam carriers are designed to provide the necessary thickness to fill a gap between two surfaces that are bonded. Foams are conformable and permit surface contact between uneven or irregular surfaces and they also provide insulating and shock absorbing properties. Polyethylene (PE) Foam: PE foam is cross-linked, closed cell foam widely used by manufactures to produce double- coated mounting foams and single-coated tapes for a variety of industrial applications. Polyvinylchloride (PVC) Foam: PVC foam is used by manufactures to produce single- and double-coated mounting tapes. PVC foams offer a combination of softness and strength and is a good fit for certain applications. Urethane Foam: Urethane foams are available in ester and ether form. They are available in many thicknesses and densities and designed to work for specific applications. Neoprene Foam: Neoprene foams are used to produce double-coated mounting foams for special applications. These foams are not used extensively but are available. Neoprene foams are strong and provide excellent chemical resistance. Other Carriers Scrim: Scrim woven materials consist of threads of material that are woven into a variety of patterns. The patterns that are formed can be squares, rectangles, diamonds and other geometric shapes. The threads are typically spaced to form a wide open

  • Label Liners: Meeting the Sustainability Challenge
Label liners: meeting the sustainability challenge By Mariya Nedelcheva, Product Manager Film & With ever-greater emphasis placed on packaging and waste reduction, Jenny Wassenaar, Compliance & Sustainability brand owners are looking for solutions that secure their sustainability Director, Avery Dennison credentials. Consumers pay particularly close attention to packaging, where there are significant environmental gains to be made. For example, waste from labelling can create useful by-products and circular economies. Waste is not always visible on the final packaging, but its impact on brand reputation is no less real. Consumers’ perceptions of a brand can be enhanced when sustainability is improved. label.averydennison.com Matrix Liner Final White paper waste waste label 16% 35% 37% Start-up waste plus Challenge printed End-user The challenge of recycling waste from the labelling process in error scrap - and ideally creating useful by-products - is complex. Many 10% 1% different elements must be addressed in order to move towards the ultimate goal of zero waste. For example, the word ‘recyclable’ can mean many things, and should not be viewed in isolation. Today there is a chance that recyclable products will still end up in landfill, so what matters is establishing genuinely viable end-to-end recycling solutions. That means considering every component within packaging, including where it comes from, how much material has been used, and what happens at every stage of the package’s journey through the value chain. This paper discusses how the sustainability of labelling laminates can be improved, with a particular focus on the label release liners that are left behind once labels have been dispensed.

  • Release Agents and Release Liners
TECHNICAL TIP RELEASE AGENTS AND RELEASE LINERS A pressure sensitive adhesive, (PSA), has the ability to stick to anything that it comes into contact with. Controlling adhesive adhesion until the adhesive is in its correct placement is the function of a release liner or release agent in the case of self-wound tapes. Release agents are usually low surface energy polymers that a PSA will not bond to. One of the most common polymers used as a release agent is silicone. Other types of polymers are also used as release agents, especially on self-wound tapes, such as vinyl carbamates, vinyl acrylic copolymers, fluoro-acrylates, modified polyurethanes and even modified starch chemistries. Release agents are usually a liquid, either solvent or water based, applied to the substrate then is dried and cured before coming in contact with the adhesive. Release agents can be formulated for different degrees of bond to the PSA depending on final product. An easy release is where the PSA removes from the release agent very smoothly with no sound. Modified release is where the bond of the PSA is a little higher to meet requirements of the final product. Tight release levels are used when a pressure sensitive media may encounter extremely small diameter rolls in either printing or die cutting or cutting small font graphics on a plotter cutter. SELF-WOUND TAPES Self-wound tapes are rolls of pressure sensitive product that upon use, one layer is pulled off the layer underneath it in the application process. Tapes are limited to one process, unwind and application usually in the same motion.

Abhesive coatings are applied to surfaces to prevent sticking, heat sealing, etc. The inherent ability of a surface to inhibit deterioration or destruction by friction. Also called 'rub or scuff resistance,' it Abrasion Resistance relates to the toughness of an ink or coating. Abrasiveness The tendency of a paper, coating or ink to abrade or wear away die edges, slitting blades, printing type, etc., by friction. Absorbency That property of a porous material which causes it to take up liquids or vapors. Absorption The penetration of one substance into the mass of another. To hasten the natural progress of an event or a series of events. This can be accomplished by using heat, fast drying Accelerate solvents or by increasing the volume of air. Procedures for subjecting pressure sensitive label stock to special environmental conditions in order to predict the course of Accelerated Aging natural aging. A material added to a liquid compound to convert the whole mass into a solid, or speed up its cure. Accelerators differ from Accelerator catalysts in that they participate in the reaction and lose their chemical identity as a result. A plastic synthesized from cellulose dissolved in acetic acid which exhibits rigidity, dimensional stability and ink receptivity. Acetate Transparent or matte films, sometimes used for label stocks. Acetate Film A clear film made from cellulose acetate. Acrylate Resins A type of copolymer used in UV inks, adhesives and coating formulations.

Release liners • Liner substrates • Silicone release coatings • Coating technology • Release liner properties Alexander Knott Senior TS&D Scientist, Dow and Chairman of the Technical Committee and Board Member, FINAT Self adhesive labels – release liner component • A ‘typical’ self-adhesive label is produced from a ‘laminate’ consisting of a face material against which a PSA layer and a release liner are laminated. • The release liner consists of a base paper (or film) on which the release coating is applied in liquid form and then crosslinked & dried to leave a silicone elastomer release coating. The release coating is a very thin layer ~ 1 micron thick (0.001mm). As thin as is possible but still maintaining as complete a covering of the base substrate as possible Release liners • Liner substrates • Silicone release coatings • Coating technology • Release liner properties Release liner - substrate Two aspects of the release liner substrate are critical for optimum performance; A. Surface properties; - Closed & smooth surface (to limit penetration of silicone, and need for silicone). - Minimal impact on silicone cure (poisoning), allows cost advantages - Encourage robust anchorage (especially at high speed) of silicone to surface, to prevent loss/abrasion of silicone impacting release. B. Mechanical properties; - Hard surface (enables better die cutting of labels) - Reproducible thickness/caliper (allows reliable setting of die cut) - Tensile strength & tear strength (withstand the stresses applied at high speed). Both must be balanced vs basic demands on COST. Release Liner - Substrate Typical Substrates; A.Glassine & SCK (Super-Calendared Kraft) - Very smooth surface, High level of surface refinement (closed) - Excellent mechanical and chemical properties. B. CCK (Clay-coated Kraft - Highly closed surface, Excellent lay-flat properties C.
