STREET KINGS Die Karriere des amerikanischen Filmemachers David Ayer ist noch recht jung. Dennoch zieht sich bereits jetzt ein (blut)roter Faden durch sein Schaffen. Ob seine Drehbücher zu TRAINING DAY (2001, Regie: Antoine Fuqua) oder DARK BLUE (2002, Ron Shelton) – stets geht es bei Ayer um LAPD-Cops zwischen Korruption und Selbstjustiz. So auch in seinem neuen Film STREET KINGS, der einst einmal „The Night Watchman“ betitelt war und von Spike Lee bzw. Oliver Stone inszeniert werden sollte. In STREET KINGS ist es Keanu Reeves, der den leidgeprüften Detective Tom Ludlow gibt, dessen Arbeit ständig die Grenzen der Legalität auslotet. Auch bei seinem jüngsten Alleingang zur Befreiung zweier entführter Mädchen hat er die Rückdeckung seines Captains. Großartig wird dieser von Forest Whitaker dargestellt, der – besonders gegen Ende des Films – zu wahrer schauspielerischer Klasse aufläuft. Bei der in den Medien gefeierten Befreiungsaktion gehen sämtliche der koreanischen Kinderschänder drauf – an gesetzmäßigen Verfahren ist die Truppe des Captains schon lange nicht mehr interessiert. Problematisch wird es für Tom erst, als sein Ex-Partner vor seinen Augen niedergeschossen wird – der ihn kurz zuvor bei der Dienstaufsicht angeschwärzt hatte. Plötzlich sieht sich Tom zwischen den Fronten der organisierten Kriminalität und allerlei korrupter Cops. Nach seinem Low-Budget-Debüt HARSH TIMES (2005) ist auch David Ayers zweite Regiearbeit STREET KINGS ein düsterer und atemloser Thriller mit rhythmischen Gewaltschüben, die es wahrlich in sich haben. Mit zunehmendem Finanzrahmen geht dabei jedoch auch die Rohheit seiner früheren Arbeit schrittweise verloren. Die verwackelte Handkamera ersetzt nun oft eine besser erträgliche Steadicam, die moralische Unterfütterung des allseitigen Chaos’ ist weitaus leichter zu verdauen.

Polansky Stanton Glantz, PHD BREATHE CALIFORNIA of SACRAMENTO-EMIGRANT TRAILS and the CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco, California February 2009 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tobacco presentations in commercial motion pictures are of serious public health concern because cumulative exposure to this imagery causes large numbers of adolescents to start smoking.1 An estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation is attributed to this exposure.2,3 To examine trends in the number of tobacco presentations over time, by Motion Picture Association of America age-classification and North American distributor, we surveyed a large sample of films released to U.S. theaters 1991-2008 to trace the proportion of smoking and smokefree films, incidence of tobacco imagery in films with smoking, tobacco impressions (incidents times paid admissions) delivered to theater audiences, and tobacco brand display. Policy advocacy aimed at reducing adolescent exposure to tobacco in youth-rated (G, PG and PG13) films by modernizing the rating system to rate smoking movies R, with some specific exceptions,4 has been directed at the major studio distributors and their parent corporations since 2001. Some companies have adopted public stances that reflect growing public concern over the issue of smoking in youth-rated films.

Entre el Metraje Encontrado y la realidad policíaca estadounidense 1 Manuela Buitrago Serna Artículo recibido el 9 de octubre de 2020, aprobado para su publicación el 17 de noviembre de 2020 Resumen El filme End of Watch, ejemplo de intertextua- lidad, se centra en una narrativa social que revela la problemática del narcotráfico mexicano y sus dife- rentes formas de violencia. Como tratamiento a este fenómeno se evidencia la desfiguración de la ética para dar paso a la violencia policial, de base, como un problema de racismo. Como característica del subgénero Metraje Encontrado se hace uso de planos subjetivos y se expone la impronta del director como un cineasta interesado en el drama criminal. Between found footage and American police reality Abstract The film End of Watch, an example of inter-textuality, focuses on a social narrative that reveals the problem of Mexican drug trafficking and its different forms of violence. As a treatment of this phenome- non, it shows the disfigurement of ethics to give way to basic police violence, as a problem of racism. As a characteristic of the Found Footage sub-genre, subjective shots are used and the director’s imprint as a filmmaker interested in criminal drama is exposed.
