But in that time, the thing that made it special – a way to stand out from the rush of albums every Friday – has been diluted by ubiquity. Now that Apple Music is tentatively entering the fray with its own twist (termed “pre-adds”), the need to bring something else beyond a simple save mechanic has never been greater. While some marketers are already asking if this is more about pleasing the DSPs than the fans, there is still plenty of life in the strategy. We look at how it has got to this stage and where it needs to move next. t is a mark of how quickly the digital music industry moves that the pre-save Icampaign has gone from being wonderful novelty to standard marketing tool in the 18 months since Kobalt first debuted the concept in support of Laura Marling’s Semper Femina . Inevitably, with this swift rise has come a fair amount of dissatisfaction with the practice, which lets music fans pre-save forthcoming albums and tracks to their streaming libraries and playlists (mostly, but not exclusively, on Spotify). The dialogue is inaudible, but an intertitle appears on screen: “HER: Who is your favorite fi lm- Mmaker?” “HIM: Miles Davis.” This moment of Black audiovisual appreciation anticipates a conversation between Black popular cul- ture scholars Uri McMillan and Mark Anthony Neal that inspires the subtitle for this In Focus dossier: “Music Video as Black Art.”1 McMillan and Neal interpret the complexity of contemporary Black music video production as a “return” to its status as “art”— and specifi cally as Black art—that self-consciously uses visual and sonic citations from various realms of Black expressive culture in- cluding the visual and performing arts, fashion, design, and, obvi- ously, the rich history of Black music and Black music production. McMillan and Neal implicitly refer to an earlier, more recogniz- able moment in Black music video history, the mid-1990s and early 2000s, when Hype Williams defi ned music video aesthetics as one of the single most important innovators of the form. Although it is rarely addressed in the literature on music videos, the glare of the prolifi c fi lmmaker’s infl uence extends beyond his signature lumi- nous visual style; Williams distinguished the Black music video as a creative laboratory for a new generation of artists such as Arthur Jafa, Kahlil Joseph, Bradford Young, and Jenn Nkiru.

WIKINOMICS How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything EXPANDED EDITION Don Tapscott and Anthony D. Williams Portfolio Praise for Wikinomics “Wikinomics illuminates the truth we are seeing in markets around the globe: the more you share, the more you win. Wikinomics sheds light on the many faces of business collaboration and presents a powerful new strategy for business leaders in a world where customers, employees, and low-cost producers are seizing control.” —Brian Fetherstonhaugh, chairman and CEO, OgilvyOne Worldwide “A MapQuest–like guide to the emerging business-to-consumer relation- ship. This book should be invaluable to any manager—helping us chart our way in an increasingly digital world.” —Tony Scott, senior vice president and chief information officer, The Walt Disney Company “Knowledge creation happens in social networks where people learn and teach each other. Wikinomics shows where this phenomenon is headed when turbocharged to engage the ideas and energy of customers, suppli- ers, and producers in mass collaboration. • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. • 1 When Mars and Venus Collide
1 When Mars and Venus Collide: The Struggle for Power and Respect in Romance as told by The Carters In the wake of the recent public reconciliation of Beyonce and Jay-Z’s marriage in their latest joint project, Everything is Love, we are reminded yet again of the cultural supremacy of The Carters as they continue to place themselves as the ‘power couple’ we can base our understandings of love and relationships upon. While this current project lives on a cloud of renewed trust through forgiveness, it is still fresh in our mind the first gauntlet that was thrown by Beyonce through her hallmark Lemonade project, and its effect on our perception of The Carters and their place in our culture. Renowned as an aesthetic and cultural tour de force, Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade is an exposition of the emotional hardships women undergo in romantic relationships. The pop culture relevance of Lemonade is rooted in its ability to give rhetorical form to the experiences of women in relationships, thus validating and supporting these experiences. Specifically, Beyoncé shows the struggle for power and respect that often takes place in heterosexual romantic relationships is rooted in a patriarchal model of love and romance. In this article I briefly analyze several poems from Lemonade that most saliently display its themes of love, womanhood, and the struggle for power and respect in relationships. To supplement my analysis I reference Bell Hooks’s book, All About Love, because of its explicit discussion of the shifting state of power within male/female romantic relationships.

Although Don had worried about the time it would take to paint the walls, within days furniture was moved, walls were painted, and food was brought for everyone who had helped to share. Why would the community come together to do this, with nothing promised in return? Don’s anecdote shows that in for the actors involved in San Antonio’s diverse music scene -- musicians, venue owners and staff, audience members, and everyone else involved -- venues are more than just physical locations; they symbolize shared values as well as a communal home for those who frequent the venue.
