  • Addition to Summer Letter
May 2020 Dear Student, You are enrolled in Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition for the coming school year. Bowling Green High School has offered this course since 1983. I thought that I would tell you a little bit about the course and what will be expected of you. Please share this letter with your parents or guardians. A.P. Literature and Composition is a year-long class that is taught on a college freshman level. This means that we will read college level texts—often from college anthologies—and we will deal with other materials generally taught in college. You should be advised that some of these texts are sophisticated and contain mature themes and/or advanced levels of difficulty. In this class we will concentrate on refining reading, writing, and critical analysis skills, as well as personal reactions to literature. A.P. Literature is not a survey course or a history of literature course so instead of studying English and world literature chronologically, we will be studying a mix of classic and contemporary pieces of fiction from all eras and from diverse cultures. This gives us an opportunity to develop more than a superficial understanding of literary works and their ideas. Writing is at the heart of this A.P. course, so you will write often in journals, in both personal and researched essays, and in creative responses. You will need to revise your writing. I have found that even good students—like you—need to refine, mature, and improve their writing skills. You will have to work diligently at revising major essays.

  • Albert Nobbs
Albert Nobbs This could be called a “chamber film,” adapting the word from chamber music, which implies intimate music played in a salon setting and often melding several solo instruments into a seamless harmony. The modest but very touching “Albert Nobbs” definitely qualifies as a chamber film, with its intimacy of setting, its gentle tone, and its bevy of actors serving as the concordant instruments in a Victorian dance of stilled passions. Albert Nobbs (Glenn Close) is a middle-aged woman living a life-long lie: she works as a male waiter in the restaurant of the turn-of-the-century Morrison Hotel in Dublin, a life she has chosen because it suits her and constitutes civilized behavior. Her/his (thatʼs the last time Iʼll use that locution in the review) motivation is suggested only once and obliquely. It appears she was the victim of sexual abuse as a young woman and retreated thereafter into a protected, sexless condition. She has always lived alone, done her job without fault, strived not to stand out, and to cover up her true identity. Albert does have a dream, however. She desires to be her own boss and has hoarded her salary over 30 years to put money down on a “nice” tobacco shop. Hers has been, of necessity, a life of routines carefully crafted—until she encounters two very different women. One is the lovely hotel maid, Helen Dawes (Mia Wasikowska), who Albert feels needs rescuing after being treated badly by her lover, a handsome bounder named Joe Mackin (Aaron Johnson). Another is the burly Mr.

  • The Archaic Shudder? Toward a Poetics of the Sublime (In Two Sections: Creative and Critical)
Title The Archaic Shudder? Toward a poetics of the sublime (in two sections: creative and critical) Student Name Dan Disney Diploma of Arts (Editing), RMIT Bachelor of Arts, Monash University Master of Creative Arts (Research), University of Melbourne This thesis is submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by creative work (50%) and dissertation (50%), School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne. Submitted 15th September, 2009. 1 2 Abstract This cross-disciplinary investigation moves toward that sub-genre in aesthetics, the theory of creativity. After introducing my study with a re-reading of Heidegger’s essay, ‘The Origin of the Work of Art’, I appropriate into a collection of poems ideas from Plato, Kant, Heidegger, Wittgenstein, and a range of post-philosophical theorists. Next, after Murmur and Afterclap, in the critical section of my investigation I formulate a poetics of the sublime, and move closer to my own specialist term, poeticognosis. With this term, I set out to designate a particular style of apprehending-into-language, after wonder, as it pertains (I argue) to creative producers. Section One Murmur and Afterclap The poetry submitted here does not arise simply out of a theoretical position or theoretical concerns, and it is not in any sense exemplary or programmatic. It is, however, related in complex ways to the issues raised later in the critical section of my investigation, and indeed has provoked − necessitated − my theoretical discussion (rather than the other way around). The poems contained in this section of my investigation draw from the many documents I have encountered in my attempt to shape a discourse with philosophy.

  • Upper School Summer Reading 2015-2016
Upper School Summer Reading 2015-2016 Below are the summer reading requirements and book lists for Upper School students at BB&N. Students entering Grade 9 in the fall are expected to read two books from the English Department Book List. Students entering Grades 10-12 in the fall are expected to read three books. For most students, this will include one book from the English Department Book List, one book in preparation for the student’s History course, and one book (or assignment) in preparation for the student’s World Language course. If students do not have a required book for their History or World Language course, they will read an additional book from the English Department Book List. Naturally, we encourage students to read well beyond the minimum number of required books! Please find a list of great reads recommended by the Upper School librarians at the end of this document. In general, books for summer reading can be purchased at any bookstore or online bookseller. If a specific edition of a book is required for a course, this will be noted in book description below. If you have any general questions about summer reading, please contact Karen Wyon, Assistant to the Upper School Director (617-800-2131, [email protected]). In addition, feel free to reach out directly to the teacher, department head, or language coordinator listed below.
