Ett särskilt tack till våra samarbetsparter i Modernautställningen 2014: Polska Institutet, Danish Arts Foundation, Latvian Culture Capital Fund, The Ministry of Culture of Republic of Lithuania and Lithuanian Council, Center for Contemporary Arts, Estland och Cultural Endowment of Estonia samt Region Skåne för extra bidrag. It is with the greatest pleasure that we present The Moderna Exhibition in Malmö. Held every four years, The Moderna Exhibition is an exhibition of contemporary art and has previously featured artists from around Sweden. This year though, we’ve broadened our reach to include artists from most of the Baltic region. One hundred years after the legendary Baltic Exhibition in Malmö, The Moderna Exhibition 2014 includes artists from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Sweden. More than thirty artists and artist groups are contributing to a rich and multifaceted sampling of contemporary art from around the Baltic Sea. In addition, a few carefully selected works from Moderna Museet’s collection have been included as points of reference and historical markers J.O. Mallander extending into our own time. Society Acts is the theme that curators Andreas Nilsson and Maija Brancusi Study (1972) Rudovska have developed in dialogue with the invited artists. 22 fotografier, varierande mått/ For Moderna Museet, with its international orientation and national roots, the opportunity to 22 photographs, regularly stake out a position in the landscape of contemporary art is central to the museum’s mission. variable dimensions Moderna Museet In 2006 the focus was on the relationship between the individual and the surrounding world. Against the background of a fragmented experience of time and space, the curatorial team posed the question, “When am I?” In 2010 the focus turned to the mutually reinforcing differences among the artists, with documentary works and fictive strategies joined with explorations of painting, sculpture, and artistic research. When we now for the third time look for an answer to the question of what characterizes contempo rary art in our region, it seems perfectly natural to switch the location of the exhibition from Stockholm to Malmö, from the Moderna Museet’s older building to a newer one in a region with characteristics other than those of the capital city. We look forward with great anticipation to seeing how the artists res pond to the issues of our day and to the motto Society Acts. The fact that artists such as Tadeusz Kantor, Björn Lövin and J. O. Mallander, who are already part of the museum’s canon, are participating here as catalysts only heightens our expectations for a complex, contentrich, and challenging exhibition. Our warmest thanks goes to the Skåne Regional Council and the City of Malmö who, together with our faithful and generous sponsor E.ON, have been decisive in maintaining a vibrant and suc cessful Moderna Museet Malmö. We would especially like to thank our collaborative partners for The Moderna Exhibition 2014: the Polish Institute, the Danish Arts Foundation, the Latvian Culture Capital Fund, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Lithuanian Council, Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia and Cultural Endowment of Estonia and the Skåne Regional Council for additional support. Thanks also to Wonderleap & Eight for a good collaboration. The catalogue, which is an important part of the exhibition itself, is congenially designed by All the Way to Paris, whom we hereby thank along with Letterstedtska föreningen for their support. Many thanks to the curatorial team and catalogue authors Andreas Nilsson and Julia Björnberg from Moderna Museet Malmö in collaboration with Maija Rudovska, a curator based in Riga who is also making it possible for a new version of the exhibition to be shown at kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga next spring. Our final and greatest thanks is reserved for the participating artists who have come to gether for The Moderna Exhibition 2014! 6 7 — FOREWORD John Peter Nilsson, chef John Peter Nilsson, Director Moderna Museet Malmö Moderna Museet Malmö Inledning Introduction Idag är snäva nationella gränsdragningar bedrägliga. • Denmark 2019 Human Rights Report
DENMARK 2019 HUMAN RIGHTS REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Kingdom of Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with democratic, parliamentary rule. Queen Margrethe II is head of state. A prime minister, usually the leader of the largest party of a multiparty coalition, is head of government and presides over the cabinet, which is accountable to a unicameral parliament (Folketing). The kingdom includes Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which are autonomous with similar political structures and legal rights. They manage most of their domestic affairs, while the central Danish government is responsible for constitutional matters, citizenship, monetary and currency matters, foreign relations, and defense and security policy. Observers deemed national elections on June 5 free and fair. On June 27, the center-left Social Democratic Party formed a single-party minority government headed by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The National Police maintain internal security and, jointly with the Danish Immigration Service, is responsible for border enforcement at the country’s ports of entry. The Ministry of Justice oversees both services. The Armed Forces report to the Ministry of Defense and have responsibility for external security in addition to some domestic security responsibilities, such as disaster response and maritime sovereignty enforcement. The Home Guard, a volunteer militia under the Ministry of Defense but without constabulary powers, assists the National Police in conducting border checks. Civilian authorities maintained effective control over the National Police, the Danish Immigration Service, and the Armed Forces, and the government has effective mechanisms to investigate and punish abuse. There were no reports of significant human rights abuses. The government took steps to identify, investigate, prosecute, and punish officials who committed human rights abuses.
