One of my fondest football memories is pulling on the Vic Country jumper as a 17-year-old and testing myself against the best young players in the country. While back then it was U17 national carnival, very little has changed in regards to the signifi cant part these games play in the overall talent pathway. The U18 Championships provide AFL clubs with an opportunity to see the best players from around Australia play against one another, and in most cases, perform on grounds used at the elite level. Knowing how a player copes with the added pressure of playing against superior opposition in big matches is increasingly important to recruiters. The Vic Country and Vic Metro squads, which will be trimmed to 40 players following this weekend’s opening match, will no doubt include future stars of the game. So many current AFL Champions fi rst rose to prominence in the National Championships, with countless others going on to make their mark at VFL level. The Country v Metro rivalry has been around for as long as football itself and to see it unfold again as part of Division 1 of the U18 Championships is a sign of the strength of our academy programs, which are supported by Dairy Australia and their Legendairy campaign. Despite neither side winning the Championship in 2014, it proved to be one of our most successful ever. Thirty eight players from the academies in 2014 were selected by an AFL club in the National Draft , headlined by Patrick McCartin (Vic Country) and Christian Petracca (Vic Metro) as the fi rst and second pick. While both the Vic Country and Vic Metro squads are eager to end South Australia’s two-year reign as title holders, the focus remains on providing a high performance environment for the best players in the TAC Cup competition and an opportunity to show what they can do on the big stage. This weekend, former Vic Metro player Ben Jolley plays his 200th Peter Jackson VFL match, a milestone that speaks of his commitment and professionalism over a long and decorated career. We congratulate Ben and wish him well in the Seagulls’ clash with Coburg. We also send our best wishes to the Victorian Women’s Football League representatives who will play for Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs in this Sunday’s AFL Women’s Exhibition match. The game, one of two to be played this season, is great showcase for female football and we are thrilled to see so many VWFL players get an opportunity.
