Release of NSS WISH Annual Report The Release of NSS WISH Annual Report of the year 2012-13 and Honouring of NSS Volunteers who have attended the Adventure Camp in Arunachal Pradesh was held on 11 th July 2013 am at A/C Auditorium, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli. The Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Founder Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena inaugurated the programme by lighting the ‘Kuthuvilaku’ . Dr. L. Ganesan, NSS Coordinator (i/c) & Organising Secretary of WISH welcomed the gathering. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ (Retd.) briefly explained about WISH. Mrs. G.K. Krishnaveni, Advisory Committee Member of WISH expressed the experience of the field visit during the awareness programmes held at gross root level. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Founder Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena while releasing the NSS WISH Annual Report said that WISH had started off in fine style in conveying the message of Health and Sanitation through the NSS Volunteers in eight districts (Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur) under Bharathidasan University jurisdiction. Over 12,000 NSS Volunteers through their special camps had covered about 200 villages and conveyed the message to the villagers. The mission of WISH is to propagate intensively good Menstrual Hygiene Management and Sanitation practices to students in all the colleges in the University and also to selected areas in other universities in the state. Already enquiries are coming about the good work done by WISH through NSS Volunteers from other states also. Considering the importance of safe disposal of Sanitary Napkins under the Public Private Partnership programme with financial support to the tune of 55 lakhs from Maharatna Public Sector Company, BHEL of Trichy, under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Scheme. Already 25 institutions have been provided Electrical Incinerators in the first phase and 125 more institutions will be covered shortly. She felicitated and distributed the certificates to the 27 NSS Volunteers and 2 Programme Officers who attended the Adventure Camp held at Roing in Arunachal Pradesh. She also appreciated the service rendered by the Programme Officers during their three year tenure. Dr. T. Ramani Devi, Vice President of TRIOGS while receiving the first copy of the report said Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) was high in India, 75 per lakh, which are preventable. Ignorance of good healthy food habits and personal and Menstrual Hygiene Management were the main reasons for this high rate of MMR. WISH could play a key role in popularising the message of Nutritious food and MHM and thereby reduce the rate of MMR. Dr. M.S. Ashraf, Member of Tamil Nadu Medical Council, Trichy pointed out that a large number of college students especially girls were suffering from Anaemia. More balanced diet and intake of cereals and pulses can cure this menace. Mrs. Jembaga Ramakrishnan, Coordinator, All Ladies Clubs of Trichy offered felicitations. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ (Retd.) proposed the Vote of Thanks. Periyar E.V.R. College, Trichy NSS units of Periyar EVR College, Trichy conducted a one day awareness programme on “Health Measures for Women” on 25 th July 2013. Dr. K. Sekar, Principal of the college presided over the function, while Dr. P. Sivakumar, NSS Programme Officer welcomed the gathering. Dr. N. Murugeswari, Associate Professor, Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University delivered the keynote address. She discussed about the food practices, problems facing at adolescence period and how to overcome from this. Special invitees, Dr. Charmila, Secretary, Trichy Obstetrics and Gynaecologists Society (TRIOGS) and Dr. T. Ramani Devi, Vice-President, TRIOGS & Executive Committee Member, WISH emphasised the background of getting irregular period and how to overcome from this problems. She advised to practice regular exercise to run a healthy life and the method of disposing the used sanitary napkin. More than 150 girls participated and benefitted in this awareness programme. 7 4. Cauvery College for Women, Trichy An awareness Programme on Reproductive Sanitation on Menstrual Hygiene Management for the school girls was organised by the NSS units of Cauvery College for Women, Trichy on 25.07.2013. The programme was conducted at SMS Higher Secondary School, Woraiyur. There were 60 students participated in the programme. The programme was conducted by Mrs. S. Agansia, NSS Programme Officer, Cauvery College for Women, Trichy. NSS Programme Officer Mrs. S. Agansia delivered the welcome address. Mrs. Indra, Head mistress in-charge, SMS School rendered the presidential address in the programme. Ms. S. Sangeetha, Paediatric Counsellor, Government Hospital, Trichy rendered the Chief Guest’s address. She spoke about reproductive sanitation and personal hygiene. She explained about the proper usage of sanitary packs and how to dispose the sanitary packs properly. It was an interactive session. Students clarified all their doubts regarding reproductive sanitation and personal hygiene. The school girls praised the NSS units of the college for organising such a useful programme for them. Mrs. Agansia, NSS PO of the Cauvery College and Ms. S. Sangeetha, Paediatric Counsellor, Government Hospital, Trichy rendering their speech 8 5. Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College, Trichy A wish awareness programme on health, nutrition and Menstrual Hygiene Management was organised by the five NSS units of the Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Trichy at Raja Kalyana Mandapam on 5.08.2013, which was attended by 220 NSS volunteers. Ms. Sundari, NSS Programme Officer welcomed the gathering. Ms. Anitha, NSS Programme officer explained the unique features of WISH, the first of its kind in any university in the State to help women students and women of the rural areas as per the vision of the Chief Minister of the State. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator, WISH and Retired Special Correspondent, THE HINDU who was the resource person explained the key role of WISH and NSS could play in women empowerment and in achieving better quality of life for both women students and the women in the community.
