Title: Suburban Verticalisation in London: regeneration, intra-urban inequality and social harm Abstract: With the rapid and large scaled expansion of new developments of high rise flats, London’s outer boroughs are seeing a suburban growth not seen since the 1930s. The objective of this mass verticalization are similar to the suburbanisation that occurred in the inter-war period in aiming to provide housing to a growing urban population. However behind the demographic imperative, other economic, socio-cultural and political processes come into play as they did in the past. Considering spatial, social and material transformations, the paper is concerned with a combination of factors, actors, structures and processes in this initial analysis of the new vertical suburbs of London. With this combined perspective, the analysis contributes to critical debates in criminology that are expanding to issues of social harm and social exclusion in the capitalist city. In this paper, I interrogate the fact that an increase of the housing stock only partially addresses the housing crisis in London as the problem of the provision of social housing is becoming increasingly limited under tight budget constraints and a financial structure that relies on and facilitates the involvement of the private sector in the delivery and management of housing. I also question the promises of regeneration solutions through new-build gentrification which have proved ineffective in other urban contexts and should be examined further in the context of London suburbs where the scale of construction is unprecedented and comes to exacerbate inequalities that have long been overlooked when the focus has been on inner boroughs and their gentrification. -

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF URBAN AND REGIONAL RESEARCH 471 DOI:10.1111/1468-2427.12180 — BUILDING FROM SCRATCH: New Cities, Privatized Urbanism and the Spatial Restructuring of Johannesburg after Apartheid claire w. herbert and martin j. murray Abstract By the start of the twenty-first century, the once dominant historical downtown core of Johannesburg had lost its privileged status as the center of business and commercial activities, the metropolitan landscape having been restructured into an assemblage of sprawling, rival edge cities. Real estate developers have recently unveiled ambitious plans to build two completely new cities from scratch: Waterfall City and Lanseria Airport City ( formerly called Cradle City) are master-planned, holistically designed ‘satellite cities’ built on vacant land. While incorporating features found in earlier city-building efforts, these two new self-contained, privately-managed cities operate outside the administrative reach of public authority and thus exemplify the global trend toward privatized urbanism. Waterfall City, located on land that has been owned by the same extended family for nearly 100 years, is spearheaded by a single corporate entity. Lanseria Airport City/Cradle City is a planned ‘aerotropolis’ surrounding the existing Lanseria airport at the northwest corner of the Johannesburg metropole. This book’s chief concern has been with one such spatial imaginary – the megaregion. More particularly, its theme has been the assertion that the megaregion constitutes globalization’s new urban form. Yet, what is clear is that the intellectual and practical literatures underpinning the megaregion thesis are not internally coherent and this is the cause of considerable confusion over the precise role of megaregions in globalization. This book has offered one solution through its focus on the who, how and why of megaregions much more than the what and where of megaregions. In short, moving the debate forward from questions of definition, identification and delimitation to questions of agency (who or what is constructing megaregions), process (how are megaregions being constructed), and specific interests (why are megaregions being constructed) is the contribution of this book. The individual chapters have interrogated many of the claims and counter-claims made about megaregions through examples as diverse as California, the US Great Lakes, Texas and the Gulf Coast, Greater Paris, Northern England, Northern Europe, and China’s Pearl River Delta. But, as with any such volume, our approach has offered up as many new questions as it has provided answers. -

This paper reviews the evolution of tall building’s structural systems and the technological driving force behind tall building developments. For the primary structural systems, a new classification – interior structures and exterior structures – is presented. While most representative structural systems for tall buildings are discussed, the emphasis in this review paper is on current trends such as outrigger systems and diagrid structures. Auxiliary damping systems controlling building motion are also discussed. Further, contemporary “out-of-the-box” architectural design trends, such as aerodynamic and twisted forms, which directly or indirectly affect the structural performance of tall buildings, are reviewed. Finally, the future of structural developments in tall buildings is envisioned briefly. By surveying past, present as well as possible future towers, this paper examines another attribute of these structural systems - the blend of structural functionality and aesthetics. Given the external nature of these structural systems, diagrids and exterior bracings can visually communicate the inherent structural logic of a building while also serving as a medium for artistic effect. -
The Congress for the New Urbanism Views Disinvestment in Central Cities
The Congress for the New Urbanism views disinvestment in central cities, the spread of placeless sprawl, increasing separation by race and income, environmental deterioration, loss of agricultural lands and wilderness, and the erosion of society’s built heritage as one interrelated community-building challenge. We stand for the restoration of existing urban centers and towns within coherent metropolitan regions, the reconfiguration of sprawling suburbs into communities of real neighborhoods and diverse districts, the conservation of natural environments, and the preservation of our built legacy. We advocate the restructuring of public policy and development practices to support the following principles: neighborhoods should be diverse in use and population; communities should be designed for the pedestrian and transit as well as the car; cities and towns should be shaped by physically defined and universally accessible public spaces and community institutions; urban places should be framed by architecture and landscape design that celebrate local history, climate, ecology, and building practice. We recognize that physical solutions by themselves will not solve social and economic problems, but neither can economic vitality, community stability, and environmental health be sustained without a coherent and supportive physical framework. We represent a broad-based citizenry, composed of public and private sector leaders, community activists, and multidisciplinary professionals. What Is New Urbanism and Traditional Neighborhood Development?
What is New Urbanism and Traditional Neighborhood Development? The term Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) has been utilized in planning and development circles within the City since November 2001 when the Flagstaff Area Regional Land Use and Transportation Plan was adopted. Indeed, the Regional Plan contains numerous references to, and actively promotes the use of, Traditional Neighborhood Developments. Incentives to promote TNDs are also provided in the Land Development Code in Chapter 4. New Urbanism emerged over the past two decades in response to the urban sprawl that has characterized development in most parts of America. From its earliest roots, the United States developed in the form of compact, mixed-use neighborhoods up to the first quarter of the last century. Urban development patterns began to change with the emergence of modern architecture and zoning and the expanded use of the automobile. Following World War II, neighborhoods were replaced with development patterns that separated land uses, i.e. conventional suburban development (CSD), or sprawl. New Urbanism is an approach to urban planning and design that can be applied at a variety of scales, moving from a single block in an urban area to a large metropolitan region. At the neighborhood level, New Urbanism is often referred to as Traditional Neighborhood Development because it revives the urban form and character of US cities and towns built from the 1600s until World War II. Early mixed-use compact traditional neighborhood development in the United States New Urbanist developments do not seek to mimic past patterns of development. Instead, New Urbanist or Traditional Neighborhood developments strive to reinterpret the qualities of old patterns of building placement, design, and public spaces to suit modern living needs, including of course the needs of the automobile.
