These issues, which are of great interest as related to the planned transformation of the Grey Belt, become more aggravated due to the increase in traffic load after the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD) opening. A significant decrease in the housing quality and cost of apartments facing embankments is observed, which can be explained by an extremely high level of noise and contamination with exhaust gases. Options for the improvement of environmental conditions, based on the conversion of territories allocated for the canal water area, are proposed. It is being noted that the Obvodny Canal has lost its functional purpose and can be converted as dozens of (nowadays former) canals in the historic center of Saint Petersburg. A product of his upbringing, Peter did have some qualities that many foreigners criticized as barbaric and harsh. But St. Petersburg’s three centuries have matured its material authenticity, recognizable tableaux and unique urban narratives, chiefly the Petersburg Text. The three of these, intertwined in their formation and development, created a distinctive place-identity. The aura arising from this distinctiveness functioned as a marketable code not only for St. Petersburg’s heritage industry, but also for a future-oriented engagement with post-Soviet hypercapitalism. Reflecting on both up-to-date scholarship and the actual cityscapes themselves, my dissertation will focus on the imaginative landscapes in the historic center of St. -

Architecture and Engineering Volume 3 Issue 3 DISAPPEARED HISTORIC OPEN SPACES IN THE CENTER OF SAINT PETERSBURG Leonid Lavrov1, Fedor Perov2 1,2 Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering 2-ya Krasnoarmeiskaya st., 4, St. Petersburg, Russia 1 [email protected] Abstract The paper questions the official statement that the system of open spaces in the historic center of Saint Petersburg has preserved the "authenticity of its chief components". Conditions for the formation and subsequent reconstructions of Theater Square and areas adjacent to the Neva river are analyzed. The nature and scope of changes those areas undergone in the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries are identified. It is shown that Senate, Admiralty, Rumyantsev, Collegiate squares and Razvodnaya ground (used for the changing of the guard) lost their transparency which disturbed the relationship between the Neva water area and city open spaces, and that significant damage was caused to the city center panorama. It is noted that the center landscape potential was neglected due to that reason. Proposals are made to recreate the lost transparency of the city center public spaces. Russia's Akademik Lomonosov – the First Modern Floating Nuclear
Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov – The First Modern Floating Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) Peter Lobner, 15 May 2021 1. Introduction Designated Project 20870, construction of Akademik Lomonosov started on 15 April 2007, when the keel was laid at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, which also is Russia’s premier submarine building shipyard. Originally, Akademik Lomonosov was expected to supply power to the Sevmash shipyard itself and the town of Severodvinsk, in Northwest Russia. Source: Rosatom In August 2008, the hull of Akademik Lomonosov was transferred to the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg, where a second “keel laying” was held in May 2009. Plans for deploying the FNPP were reconsidered, leading to the final selection of Pevek, a remote Arctic coastal city in Russia’s Far East. The FNPP was launched on 30 June 2010 and outfitting continued with the vessel secured dockside at the Baltic Shipyard. Two un-fueled OKBM Afrikantov KLT-40S modular pressurized water reactors (PWRs) were installed in October 2013. 1 After work on the vessel and reactor systems was completed in April 2018, Akademik Lomonosov was towed 4,000 km (2,485 miles) around Norway to Murmansk, where the reactors were fuelled and tested at Rosatomflot facilities, which also support their nuclear- powered icebreaker fleet. In June 2019, the Russian nuclear regulatory agency Rostekhnadzor issued a 10-year license to Rosenergoatom to operate Akademik Lomonosov until 2029. After successfully completing testing, Akademik Lomonosov departed Murmansk on 23 August 2019 and was towed 4,770 km (2,964 miles) along the Northern Sea Route, arriving at its final destination on 9 September 2019 at a new protected pier at Pevek, which is about 980 km (609 miles) west of the Bering Strait. -

We note that the ˝environment-centric˝ methodologies were already worked on and applied to housing studies in Leningrad as far back as during the 1970–1980s, and that the insights from these studies can now be used for analyzing the current state of the urban environment. Purpose of the study and methods: The information reviewed in this article gives us the first glimpse of the tangible urban environment in the historic center of Saint Petersburg. Many features of this part of the city are reminiscent of other European metropolises, but the fact that the historic center is split into three parts by vast waterways, that the construction began from the ground up in the middle of the wilderness, and that the active urban development phase lasted only a century and a half (from the 1760s to the 1910s), has a major part to play. Results: We use quantitative data to describe the features of the Saint Petersburg historic center and compare our findings to the features of European metropolises, across such parameters as spatial geometry, transportation and pedestrian links, and environmental conditions. -

The article is devoted to assessment of the role of high-rise buildings in the St. Petersburg historic city’s ensemble. Features of formation of city architectural look, the conditions of city typical silhouette’s appearance which is characterized by the contrast of a small number of high-rise structures with a low horizontal mass building are observed. The consequences of the emergence of a significant number of great height buildings, the silhouette of which conflicts with the traditional St. Petersburg landscape’s compositional principles, are analyzed. The economic reasons of high-rise construction of residential and office buildings are given. The conclusions about the prospects of St. Petersburg high-rise construction in the light of city-building and economic factors are made. 1 Introduction The problem of transformation of the historic St. Petersburg’s specific silhouette, which evolved over three centuries, appeared at the beginning of the new century. The weakening of height regulations in the mid of 1990-ies allowed to place buildings up to a height of 28- 40 meters in the city center and in the depth of the districts which led to the fact that there are more and more objects in the classic urban panoramas, which destroy the "skyline" beauty. Western Sanctions Will Affect Russian Shipbuilding
WESTERN SANCTIONS WILL AFFECT RUSSIAN SHIPBUILDING Western sanctions will not hamper construction of nuclear icebreakers, but can have negative consequences for other Russian civilian shipbuilding. Western sanctions could curb Russian Arctic oil Statoil, Rosneft delay Siberian drilling, while CEO Sechin added to international sanction list This week the U.S. and EU hardened its sanctions against Russia designed to punish its continuing backing of separatists in Eastern Ukraine. The sanctions include the EU banning any trade in arms and the US prohibiting transactions with Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation, which it classified as a defense company. According to the United Shipbuilding Corporation the sanctions will probably have no impact on state orders that already are under construction, but can seriously hamper future orders. The Baltic Shipyard outside St. Petersburg has orders to construct Russia’s three next, much-needed nuclear-powered icebreakers. The prototype was laid down in November 2013 and is planned to be ready for service in December 2017. The two next icebreakers should be ready for delivery in 2019 and 2020. “We don’t see any problems in the construction of the nuclear icebreakers, since no part of the equipment - down to the last bolt and screw – has anything to do with the U.S.” a spokesperson from United Shipbuilding Corporation says to Arctic Info. Others are not so optimistic about the future of civilian Russian shipbuilding after the last sanctions were imposed. Head of St. Petersburg’s Committee for Industrial Policy and Innovation Maksim Meyksin says to website Baltpp that the sanctions can have serious impacts on the large shipyards in the region.
