As the only contemporary music event to be held within the Dalt Vila UNESCO World Heritage site, the IMS Grand Finale Festival is a truly momentous occasion. It officially marks the end of IMS and the opening of Ibiza’s world-famous clubbing season. This year DJ E.A.S.E., of Nightmares On Wax, kicked off proceedings as the setting sun bathed the Balearic island in a golden glow. Performances from Disclosure, Seth Troxler, Loco Dice, Azari & III and Carl Cox took the energised audience into the night. The crowd then headed over to Ibiza’s iconic Pacha nightclub, where Pete Tong and Calvin Harris raised the roof until the small hours. Baird Thesis Adviser: Ellen Gorman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Studio 54, the infamous New York City discotheque open from 1977 to 1980, was a notorious site in New York City for not only being one of the most sought-after venues in nightlife, but also for its ruthless red velvet rope culture. Disco was a defining artifact in American culture in the 1970s and greatly reflected the social and political atmosphere across the country. With the culmination of various political upheavals such as the Vietnam War and the Watergate Scandal, many Americans simply wanted to party, use drugs, and openly explore their sexuality. Studio 54 was, arguably, the most influential and well-known of the many discos— admired and loathed by those within and on the outside of the disco scene. Many outsiders and eager spectators observed the club as exclusionary and dictator-like. This thesis deconstructs the red velvet rope culture and analyzes the innate behavior and qualities of the clubbers with the aim to understand how these people contributed to the tremendous popularity of Studio 54. Gossip columns, newspapers, tabloids and archived footage offers compelling insight to the way of the disco-door as well as the qualities and behaviors that club goers possessed as such to gain admission.

It is with great pleasure to announce that we have housed various aspects from Gear and MusicTalks at the De Brakke Grond and Compagnietheater; two venues expertly suited to Playground’s needs. These central and established venues will play host to a plethora of high-calibre music-tech firms and MusicTalks. I’m especially looking forward to hearing Hans Zimmer talk about his career in Hollywood, as well as experiencing the new 4DSound system. Playground 2014 will also be home to a new and improved Art Route, a contemporary selection of music films, a series of excellent pop-up stores and exhibitions throughout Amsterdam and more concerts and showcases than you can imagine. Lest this be doubted, the videos promoting the King of Pop's latest effort, "HIStory", depict him with patently obvious symbolism as a commander of armies presiding over monster rallies of impassioned followers. But whatever one makes of hoopla surrounding the album, one can scarcely ignore its amazing production values and the skill with which truly vast musical resources have been brought to bear upon the project. Where most popular music makes do with the sparse instrumentation of a working band fleshed out with a bit of synth, "HIStory" brings together such renowned studio musicians and production talents as Slash, Steve Porcaro, Jimmy Jam, Nile Rodgers, plus a full sixty piece symphony orchestra, several choirs including the Andrae Crouch Singers, star vocalists such as sister Janet Jackson and Boys II Men, and the arrangements of Quincy Jones and Jeremy Lubbock. Indeed, the sheer richness of the instrumental and vocal scoring is probably unprecedented in the entire realm of popular recording. But the richness extends beyond the mere density of the mix to the overall spatial perspective of the recording. Just as Phil Spector's classic popular recordings of thirty years ago featured a signature "wall of sound" suggesting a large, perhaps overly reverberant recording space, so the recent recordings of Michael Jackson convey a no less distinctive though different sense of deep space-what for want of other words one might deem a "hall of sound".
